I think having a "finance" button would be great. Someone would post an idea for a film, some basic information about it, past projects, and a budget and people could sponsor it via paypal.

The RIAA and the MPAA charge millions in managment fees today.

Why does matter how much money somebody makes?

Don't see the problem as long nobody comes here and say what I can share or not with others why should I bother if people want to give him money or not?

Until money or currency changes its legal status to better reflect what it's supposed to represent, I'm siding with 'Oct 14, 2009 at 18:04 by Smash_TV'.

For example, when Hollywood stars (who're apparently not quite on top of the salary pyramid) can buy entire islands ("private property: Keep off!") for no more work than your average local nurse or whomever have you, something's wrong.

That's not what I'm saying at all. I suggest you trying reading closely first, then working it out in the mind. Usually the best combination for understanding what is said.

Thought it was actually crystal clear what I posted. For starters, I said property is theft, not the sharing of it. Meaning, being able to own and say how intellectual property should be used is ridiculous.

Paying for intellectual goods whether by an stated fee or being begged for donations ala Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails is a load of shite. It should be free, end of story.

Some people posting seem to think that the financially motivated massive film studio is the problem but the also financially motivated but small film maker isn't. This just doesn't make sense.

It has to be moneyless P2P or nothing.

It's certainly going to be a wake up call when people realise regardless of whether it's produced by a massive film studio or a lone film maker, there is no right reason either in terms of sense or ethics to pay for these films. Not only should we be able to but we'll be able to find them elsewhere.

The problem isn't the scale of the business, it's the fact it's a business at all.

All property, even the independent type, is theft.

Awesome news !!!!
Time to destroy Hollywood and bring filmmaking to tjhe people not the paychecks bigwig greedies.

It is easy to do so follow my rules.
1.Stop buying any movies new
2.Buy used movies from a local store so you can help out your local economy while ruining Hollywood's
3.Buy only your fave TV Shows new so you can continue to support the shows you love.
4.do the same for all bigwig music from corporate labels.
5.Fight the rich

What #18 said:
Why? it doesn’t affect any amateur music or film maker ability to make money, why should people stop sharing?

Part of what #19 said:
don’t even have an impact on todays artists incomes and I can prove it, can you prove your statements with solid data?

Like it or not it's been proven to be *true*
You "Anti" pirate trolls are beating a very dead horse...

@22
I would imagine it has to do with image, slightly, yes...but I do not believe thats all its about...
I really think the majority of the reasoning for doing it is to honestly help these people get their work posted, so I suppose that would be "the point"

What's the point? Do the trackers think they can shift the focus with this from the pirating?

The article is stupid to imply the only alternative to bittorrent is "offline".

I'm sure you can also donate to scene groups or Hollywood studios! Or George Clooney personally to support his career...

The RIAA and the MPAA charge millions in managment fees today.

If the P2P community could do it for thousands we could see them morph into the new billionaires of the music and film industries. With a more decentralized form of management and distribution that will not endanger economies if one part of the link breaks down.

Nor does the current system that is why they are called ventures like in adventure, you could gain or more likely you could loose.

And that is why I used the term "cut it" and not "guarantee sales".

By the way P2P have no moral flaws, people have moral flaws but sharing is not one of them and it don't even have an impact on todays artists incomes and I can prove it, can you prove your statements with solid data?

That's the fundamental _quality_ of P2P my friend.

If you can't put food on your table by making films people recognize as valuable contributions to their lives and are willing to support, maybe you should be doing something else.

Business should support the people that run it only if what they do is valuable to somebody. Bad business should vanish, and that's exactly what does not happen today.

What is flawed is the current content delivery system where you're expected to pay beforehand to watch crap chosen by people who only want to make you more stupid so you'll buy more crap without knowing what it is.

I, and many others, would love to give to the makers of the films I love much more than the price of a movie ticket. After all, they're not only giving me a product, they're creating the culture I live in and, to some extent, my own personality.

And I don't like that I have to pay a costly fee to watch some crappy movie from whose makers I would much rather subtract money from, but only having the chance to find out how awful they are after I've paid for it.

Definitely "New School" and a great concept, some good ideas for it here in the comments...

Hopefully with time, the content will reach beyond "documentary's" into other genera's to interest a wider audience...

But I apologize as I am still stuck with "Old School" belief's, for example, I dont believe it's wrong to share what you have with other people, but then Vodo takes care of that as well...

Yeah, encouraging people to donate really doesn't garuntee that they will profit from their efforts or that their ventures in filmaking can put food on their table. That's the fundamental moral flaw of P2P. By definition, any business venture needs to be able to support the people that run it. What filesharers fail to realize is that artists, film makers do not soley exist for the purpose of people who enjoy their work. They also are trying to make a living for themselves.

I like the sound of a lot of major torrent sites helping something that is legal. There's a lot of film makers that don't have the platform and you tube helps but it's not meant for film makers primarily.

Ars and how free can pay.
http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/10/ddo-free-to-play.ars

The thing that caught my eye was the statment that a $15 bucks subscription is a kind of cap on what you could make. Instead using cheap $1 dollar or less approach people spend more then $15 dollars a month and the business is supported by the buzz that the great free majority make about your product LoL

Now of course the MAFIAA wouldn't understand this concept and can only see anything free as blasphemy that should be contained at any cost not realizing that they are only shooting themselves in the foot in the long run and opening themselves to fierce competition from others not counting the fertile ground they are fertilizing with rancor that leads to dissatisfaction, that will turn costumers to other places by the thousands. Basically they are committing suicide and don't even realize LoL

More, make an plugin for the major P2P clients that have micropayment embeded into it with options like:

- Donate.
- Finance.
- View with advertisement.
- Advertise with the creator.
- Got to store.
- More products from this creator.
- Nah view anyways LoL

To bad I'm lazy.

But VODO could make an API so programmer could use it as a base for a plugin that would go to their page and get all the content they want.

Oh! forgot, people should really put up a how to, about how to get pre-paid cards with limit amounts of money on it so people could use those cards to pay for things, The biggest problem paying for something online is that many people don't have a credit card number or don't use paypal or don't know how to use paypal.

Great but I don't think donations only will cut it.

Some more ideas to be implemented in the future:

- Micro-investment model. To fund new films and music. Could be like Kiva that is a microfinance system and it works not to mention slicethepie and sellaband that work on the same principals.
http://www.kiva.org/

- Online store. The biggest problem for small artists is a place to sell their goods that have a good infra structure sure they can use e-bay or amazon but it wouldn't be great to have your products sell along side your movies or music?
Look how the Durian project functions, they not only have a donation button, but also have a store and accept sponsors about the sponsors this is my next suggestion.

- Easy button for sponsor to apply and get their names on the project and contact the creator. Put a button there with all the info necessary to be able to give money and get your name on the product.

Single solutions don't work anymore, multiple solutions for collecting money is key for the future.

But this iniciative is very good. This will scare a lot of people LoL

Let’s not forget: the _original_ purpose of the bittorrent protocol was precisely to allow independents to distribute their films cheaply.

Several features of the protocol were designed with this in mind (things like a centralized tracker, the client telling the tracker about the download progress, and even the original user interface which mimicked an Internet Explorer file download dialog).

wow this is excellent, I do hope the quality of film is maintained so this does not become a bunch of amatuerish video mish-mashes though... not that hollywood can't be accused of that

Sounds promising. I can see similar initiatives being undertaken for other forms of creativity, such as music, books, games, and so on. I hope for it to become a huge success.

Good luck, VODO!

This is... border-breaking, and soo true.
If they really achieve their promises, it could be burn the holy wood. (hint hint)
The whole concept of creating, remixing, distributing and sharing is good implemented.

The next step is a worldwide foundation which provide support against anti-p2p by means of legal help, massive protests, massive boycotts, etc.
