P2P Traffic Is Booming, BitTorrent The Dominant Protocol
Written by Ernesto on November 28, 2007A recent study on the usage of filesharing applications in several countries shows that between 49 and 83 percent of all Internet traffic is P2P related, with peaks of over 95 percent during the night. Interestingly, the study also shows that about 20 percent of all BitTorrent traffic is encrypted.
Ipoque, a German based company that specializes in developing bandwidth managing solutions for Universities and ISPs concludes this from data they gathered between August and September 2007. In total, over 3 Petabytes (3 million Gigabytes) of traffic was analysed, coming from an estimated 1 Million users
They found that Eastern Europe has the highest percentage of P2P traffic relative to all other Internet traffic, Germany comes in second place with 69% and Southern Europe ended up in fourth place with 64%.
Below is a graph that shows the P2P-protocol breakdown for the different locations. There is quite a bit of regional variance in the use of P2P applications, For example, in Eastern Europe DirectConnect has a proportion of about 30% of all P2P traffic, while it is pretty much non existent elsewhere.
If we combine both graphs we can also conclude that BitTorrent is generating the most bandwidth in Eastern Europe, where it is responsible for 55% of all Internet traffic.
Another interesting finding is that Australia has the highest percentage of BitTorrent users, 73% of all P2P users use BitTorrent there.
Ipoque was also able to gather data on the number of people that use encryption. Their data collection methods support the detection of both unencrypted and encrypted protocols that use various forms of obfuscation, and they found that on average 20% of all BitTorrent users enabled encryption.
As we have mentioned before, keep in mind that Internet traffic research is often conducted by companies that offer broadband management and optimization solutions. It is in their best interest to overestimate the percentage of p2p-traffic and encryption because they sell the traffic shaping applications that help ISPs to manage their precious bandwidth.
From Ipoque’s data we can safely conclude that BitTorrent is still the dominant P2P protocol, and that P2P is responsible for more than 50% of all Internet traffic.

How’d they get this data? I mean, if my connections always encrypted, how would they know it’s p2p traffic? Tehy can’t tell i’m guessing.
how exactly do they know how much encrypted bt traffic there is if it is, well, encrypted?
they probably know what ISNT encrypted, and can work out the encrypted off of that…

Quite interesting as to how much to believe in what’s fiction and non fiction.
For encrypted traffic, they most likely assume that large encrypted data transfers following the download of a .torrent file is p2p. (BitTorrent Example)
It’s good to see more people using encryption.
Ipoque is selling traffic shaping hardware to isps.
Those are marketing statistics with the truth more twisted than a polititians character.
The data isn’t encrypted..
Only the name of the torrent client.
That way the ISP won’t recognize the client used, and therefore cannot block your speed.

All the more reason to start moving onto VPN. how could ISP’s tell the difference then from P2P traffice to legitimate business traffic or streaming.

I don’t like the looks of these results, amongst users it’s been known for a long time that BitTorrent is very popular in Australia, but most ISPs haven’t payed much noticed, the one’s that have only did so to state that they wouldn’t be shaping BitTorrent traffic. :)
But these kinds of results are the things that spark the interest of ARIA (Australian version of RIAA) and make them put more pressure on ISPs. :(
BT traffic is easy to identify (even encrypted) because of the high number of TCP connections it forms. Now stop arguing and move on to real discussion.

Actually no. First of all, trackers serve on a limited nr. of ports (i.e. traffic to the trackers is predictable, and as you know; There aren’t that many trackers, worldwide.) Second: Each announcement to the tracker can be linked to resolve listening ports (on IP or MAC basis). Third: Even when using encryption, the client is listening *with* known product tag. Many ISPs use known package headers to shape bittorrent traffic, despite their use of ports by choice.
By the way, all this is explained on the German site about this research..
What would the point be for anyone (except businesses) to have high or ultra high speed internet if you don’t P2P file-share?
If somehow all the file-sharing traffic was stopped everyone might as well go back to dial up. Companies like Rogers who sell movies as well as provide high speed internet would wind up losing a lot of the high speed internet business.
These companies probably think that if they ever get the “nasty downloaders” taken care of we would actually then buy movies they provide from them over the internet. Dream on.

(Moo)From your screenshots of U-torrent it is obvious that your connection is firewalled. (The little orange triangle in the status bar). If you sort that out by opening up the port Utorrent is using in your firewall or forwarding it from your router you’ll greatly improve your speed.
You might also want to use a more popular torrent for your test. niche musical taste is never going to get you high numbers of seeds and peers. Try a weekly TV show like house or an anime like Bleach. They regularly have upwards of 10K seeds and 25K peers.
Make sure your test is valid before you draw conclusions from the results.

Be a bit different now than a few months back I’d say, with more people using encryption, VPN, darknets etc.
What about Ants, stealthnet, MUTE? That kind of traffic wouldn’t have been added into the equation either.
I’d stay the actual P2P traffic would be quite a bit higher than this graph.
I would like to see a study about how P2P effects social behaviour. More amazing than the stuff you can download is how people talk to one another!
Every second or third comment is a “fuck you”. People who do a lot for the community get insulted for taking a break (…). And on a torrent you get to read “seed, you assholes!” which will have a negative effect on the share ratio at best.
When it comes to defending P2P people know many good reasons for doing it while at the same time no good reasons seem to be known for not going crazy about it.
It can only be a matter of time until the killing starts.

Telstra are really the only (big) one’s I know of that are doing this besides Optus and anyone stupid enough to go with Telstra isn’t likely to be using torrents (In my opinion at least).
Here’s a comparison between the Telstra plan my parents have and the Internode plan I have:
Parents: Telstra BigPond Liberty 256
256/64, which may be slowed to 64/64 after 10GB, it will be slowed after 12GB and uploads count towards this cap. $59.95p/m
Myself: Internode HOME-512-Boost
512/128, which may be slowed to (Not sure, haven’t gone over since I tend to upload more then download) after 30GB. $69/95p/m
So I’m essentially getting twice the speed and over triple the amount of data (Since uploads don’t count for me remember) for $10 more.
Might I add that Internode rent their lines from Telstra…. you know whose fucking you. :)
(There are many other Telstra plans to choose from I know, but I can pretty much without even looking at them all guarentee you there’s a comparative plan from another ISP renting their lines from Telstra that shits all over said Telstra plan, who again I’m picking on as they’re the only large provider I know of that counts uploads).
Oh sorry I should have also noted that for $5 less then what my parents pay I could have gotten the HOME-512-Value which is the same speed as what I have now but a 20GB cap. :)

High-speed bandwidth, let me count thy legal uses:
internet radio - doesn’t take _much_ bandwidth, but is a nonstop, ~significant source, especially when millions of people use it.
youtube/shitty resolution video clips - take significant bandwidth, and millions of kids/students/adults check out these 2-minute-video-clip sights 24/7.
internet tv/excellent resolution video clips and shows: nbc.com, ctv.com, tsn sports online; _much_ higher bandwidth usage, and although only a few million people in North America use these all that often, it’s still significant.
VoIP telephone: not that intensive per person, but again significant per person, and even more so for tens of millions of people.
Games: Crysis kicks ass - but honestly, after you’ve beaten the game three or four times and you have to go online to keep getting kicks from it, you do NOT want to be dropping ANY packets (and there are many! :)

Tell you something interesting about the “listen on line” radio that recently happened to me. I like a particular station in Tampa Bay that I occasionally listened to. Recently i can no longer link to it because I am in Canada and there are apparently some copyright issues with some of their content and they can no longer offer Canadian listeners on-line internet music. WTF?! How long before more stations do this. I just couldn’t believe this.
I have Sirius radio in any case and prefer that over internet based stations (portability is a big issue with internet radio :)).
You tube of course is fun but I can live without. Some of the legal video content, Voip, and on line games for gamers (I just can’t get into video games, i prefer to play live get real bruises type ones) - you have a lot of good examples there, but is that worth the extra $50.00/month to me personally. Nope
I don’t use a lot of long distance and I need a land line for my home alarm. (that’s a problem for Voip)
I have cable T.V. - if I could get all that I get on cable via internet, then yes I would be interested. But you just know that would be attacked or charged somehow later on once people caught on.
It seems any good use of the net that gains popularity is doomed from scrutiny by some group trying to put a stop to it or a price tag on it. A far cry from what internet originally stood for!

I would look at dropping your contracts with ISP’s to lower speed plans (en Mass) as a fantastic way for us (the 1 million + number you see at the bottom of an Azureus screen)to send a message IF and WHEN P2P would/could ever be “dismantled” by all these groups trying to kill P2P.
That would be a horrible loss to the ISP’s revenue stream. Maybe even enough for all the movie industry groups to start looking at a more balanced end solution then just saying NO all the time and labeling everyday honest people as criminals. (for downloading a missed episode of Prison break because they had to work late).
I agree 100% that this country by country fragmentation of the Web must not be allowed. All these big companies are all for free trade except when they can use countries as barricades to build monopolies.
