I received an alert from Comcast about a month or so ago... Normally, I download my torrents on my laptop via wireless, but that time I'd used my desktop (direct ethernet). I was trying to download a crack for our PC GTA IV game. Yes, we'd already purchased the game, but we needed some of the cracked files to make it work on Windows 7 & 8. So, I downloaded and the next day I received an email from comcast. Strike ONE, DMCA violation, no way to appeal.

I called Comcast and offered to show proof that I had the original PC game discs, and tried to explain that I was trying to patch it for compatibility, but they didn't care. They said I have no options to appeal it, but if I didn't like it I could TRY to go with another ISP.

Eh, eff them. Anyway, so I got the crack files regardless, ran those in compatibility mode and finally got the stupid game working for my boys. I was pretty pissed to buy a game and not have it even work with Win 7 (which it was supposed to be compatible with!), I really couldn't care less what Comcast thinks of my approach to getting my product to work. I didn't even download the damn game, just the cracked patch. Screw Comcast. I don't think I would have gotten the notice, however, had I used my laptop like normal- I think the direct connection was a bad idea. I can't be sure of that though, Comcast's associate kind of hinted at maybe injecting some torrents themselves to bait people- or modifying existing files to track the downloads. They wouldn't come out and admit that when asked directly, but it's plausible. The files I downloaded were from a user I'd never torrented files from previously also, so that was another mistake. Usually I'm really careful about what I download and from whom.

This one sounds fishy.
I think the parents wanted to save thier own asses on a lawsuit out of fear. As a father myself, I would seriously reconsider what I would do if my son was downloading and sharing content. Lets look at a scene with music, games, digital media etc etc
Child: "Hey i'm taking this to my friends after school"
parents: okay

Child: Uses other house computer to rip said digital media.
_______________________________________________________
Another one.

Parent: What are you doing
Child: Making a digital version of this disc.
parent: don't do that
child.. umm okay

Parent in the future: "Fuck this disc is ruined and now i need to go get another one"

ENDING A:child: Or you could contact the company and ask them for a digital copy...
parent: "dumbfound look"

ending b: Child: Told you should of let me make that digital copy. Looks like your out of luck..

the end

Yeah, I'm with others saying that apology letters don't end up stopping the forthcoming lawsuit for tens of thousands of dollars per infringement. This is why most who know anything about this situation (who have a few nickels to rub together and want to PROTECT their assets) would have put a bullet proof $$ PAID $$ VPN at the router level and flipped the industry the bird a long time ago.

Exactly Clownius. They know what to do and not to do, where it is safe to go(it seems so far) and where not to go. But if I am going to be the one held liable if my IP shows up somewhere, I would rather it be me actually doing it, then them doing it.

So far with the 6 strikes program, I have yet to receive any notices and I have grabbed hundreds of gigabytes of stuff since it started.

If that makes me a bad parent, I don't care, I also let my kids climb trees, and *gasp* ride their bikes to my parents house 10 miles away without any concern either. Heck, I even let them go out in public without a cell phone, which according to many, is very very bad, because they may be kidnapped and the GPS in it could locate them faster.
