I’ve never met so many Alaskans since moving to Hawaii. If you don’t know where someone came from, guessing Alaska would give you at least a 40% probability of being right. The other 40% would be CA/OR/WA.

Illinois, where I’m from…not so much.

“Legal” is often not anywhere close to either “right” or “just”. That’s just the way it is.

“Helping the kids” has gotten more parents into trouble than it’s worth.

The parents can only be guilty if one redefines money laundering from “proceeds of a crime transformed into ostensibly legitimate money or other assets” to accepting money at all, even unaware that the proceeds had been labeled as from illegitimate means even though they were acquired through a legitimate process. Culpability is no longer required for guilt.

I see your point. Somehow it just doesn’t seem right, but I understand the legalities. The site itself is illegal, so basically any monies gained through it are tainted. It’s unfortunate for the parents, as it’s quite possible they thought that running those “semi-grey area” funds through their bank account wouldn’t be outright illegal….or not. Nothing surprises me, anymore.

BTW, you have a great sense of humor. Your “handling of jc was epic. I guess I’m close to the “verge of death”, myself. My life expectancy should be about 100, though. Go figure.

If I were to ever leave “my paradise” Alaska, (not a vast expanse of frozen wasteland, BTW), the Big Island was my favorite of the populated chain.

The Big Island isn’t like The Descendents. It’s a vibrant, active place. We have snow-capped mountains in the winter, the world’s most continuously active volcano, best scuba diving in the USA, rainforrests, etc etc…always something to do.

What’s more “clapitalistic” than opening up a website full of links that is free to everyone yet garners $300/day? Maybe he shouldn’t have had that site hosted in Italy, possibly choosing a more piracy-friendly part of the world.

Like in the old gold rush days. Who mined the miners? The supply stores, brothels, bars and gambling dens. Those guys were the consistent winners.

I’ve always had a dose of clap(italism). It’s doing just fine.

Hey, I’m merely attempting to explain how and why certain monetary transactions become illegal. From various comments made here, many don’t understand the money laundering charge.

Your point is very clear, Kate. The advertisers did not pay just to have their ads appear in the website. They pay based on the number of visitors to the website who are exposed to their ads. So the revenue, even though passive and benign, is garnered from the pursuit of an illegal activity. The money becomes legally tainted.

Now, maybe, just maybe, if he had a front-end website for some general purpose and legal activity such as promoting craft goods, general shopping links, blogging, etc, and there was a link taking interested visitors to the pirate link site, he might have side-stepped the laundering charge.

All the ads would be in the front-end site and none in the media linking site. They would have to be 2 distinct sites, not just different pages in the same site. As long as it was obvious that the purpose of the front-end site wasn’t for the sole purpose of being a conduit to the media site, a case could be made.

But, then, how can you make a separate website accessible only through another website? I’m not technical so I don’t know.

Like the old illegal poker game going on in the back room of a bar. The old “liquor in the front, poker in the back” kind of thing. I’m almost embarrassed I said that to you…almost.
