When one looks at the research paper, the original data already shows the trend even without the Megaupload model that Ford is criticizing. Even if his criticism is correct, that would not necessarily change the conclusion.

Also, since the paper and Ford’s review (which is btw, also not peer-reviewed) use a logarithmic scale, Ford’s interpretations are too linear for my taste. In his AND in their assessment, the revenue curve is basically flat for blockbusters if plotted linearly, indepently of the definition of blockbuster. The variability of revenue for intermediate and high ‘ranked’ (size) movies is probably within the noise, caused by the taste of the audience and popularity of the actors etc.

I would argue that Ford’s model actually has more assumptions that the original model, for example that theme and popularity of a movie does not influence revenue.
