The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

.Pirate Domains Now Available Through OpenNic

The internet is built of services. One of the core services, and a major choke-point for control, is domain name resolution. There have been some alternates come and go, but one of the strongest has been OpenNIC, and they’ve just launched a new top level domain – .pirate

Despite the best efforts of Dutch lobby groups, and American entertainment cartels, the internet is a place where barriers don’t stay barriers for long.

Throw a roadblock out and a new route is recalculated. So it is with DNS. Add blocks in the ICANN systems, and people work their way around them.

The most common way until now has been a browser plugin, like MAFIAAFire, but alternate DNS systems are starting to become more popular. One of those, OpenNIC, is looking to capitalise on that with its new .pirate TLD (top level domain).

Registration takes just minutes, and then your new .pirate domain will be accessible by anyone using one of OpenNIC’s many DNS servers. That’s the big drawback at present.

However, the OpenNIC project is not just limited to .pirate (or dotPirate, as they’ve called it). They also have .geek, .oss (as in open source software) and .parody, among others.

The man behind the dotPirate project is Travis McCrea, Deputy Leader of the Canadian Pirate Party.

“While the world gets smaller and more connected through advancements of the Internet and web technology, every day our ability to have a free flow of information becomes more and more threatened by countries who wish to censor and control the communication platform which brings us all together,” McCrea told TorrentFreak.

“This is something that we cannot let happen, and why the dotPirate Foundation, … is proud to announce the launch of the new Top Level Domain (TLD) .pirate on the OpenNIC root system.”

To prevent abuse, some of the more popular domains have already been reserved (including torrentfreak.pirate and thepiratebay.pirate). As an extra bonus, people using blockaid.me for their DNS will already be able to access .pirate domains – they added support for OpenNIC over the weekend.

For those using OpenDNS, the provider announced a new service for Windows users last week. DNSCrypt, previously only available for Mac OSX and Linux, is a technology that encrypts all DNS traffic between an Internet user and the OpenDNS service. It can be downloaded here.

.Pirate domains can be registered for free at dotpirate.me.

No. Pirate is just a word. The whole Pirate Party movement is very offend by you.

A couple hundred years ago Nigger was a word of hatred from a specific entity just like the word Pirate is today. Both are now words of empowerment! Words of oppression can best be utilized against those who employ them. That process has already begun. 10 years ago if you heard the word “Pirate” most people would have a very different image in their head than they do today.

Somalia is low on the totem poll of sea piracy. There is a lot more of it in SE Asia but those pirates are a bit smarter and enjoy payoffs from shipping companies.

great, we can put back the lolita sites that used to be on the net before the crackdown by us government in 2003 starting with ls then red lagoon, and thousands of others. They said “if were going to make the internet a business item and everyone is going to use it, we have to take down these sites. At first they said “build the internet how u like it, then they said “no no,, no we can’t have this” then arrested tons of ppl. Now we can bring them back fuck the powers that be, and anyways, most of them subscribed to the sites. Uk government went to war in Afghanistan with us to relieve the pressure off the government and posted a 100 year gag order on the names of the ppl to make sure they all get away. The world is run by pedos, however they want to keep all the stuff to themselves. Look it up, its true.

The end of the article is somewhat confusing. OpenDNS and openNIC are both DNS providers, but have nothing in common. Using OpenDNS will not get you access to DotPirate domain names.
Just wanted to make that clear.

    • pitch pine

Good point. they should put that in.

  • Einstein of an idea

This is one of the more silly ideas out there. Let’s potentially concentrate everything in one place, so it can be taken out in one hit for the majority by a domain block. Not that I imagine too many sites would use it.

    • pitch pine

most sites are probably gonna use it as a redirect.

  • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

OpenNic and .Pirate domains are accessible using our DNS, and you get handy extra features!

    • Guest

I’ve been using your DNS server and it rocks!

    • http://twitter.com/icanhazsake Ninja

I wonder, is there a way to use 2 different DNS servers (ie: in case Blockaid goes down it would revert to OpenDNS) other than setting the primary DNS server for one and the Secondary for another? (ie: the primary server could crash but the secondary could still be there so I can continue using). Just occurred to me now, gonna check if it’s possible.

      • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

If you set two different DNS providers, you could intermittently lose the benefits of using BlockAid. If you’re going to use us, you shouldn’t need to rely on other systems.

We run two different servers, located on separate continents and both providers have an excellent record for uptime. If one of them went down, the other one will pick up the slack. The chances of both being down at the same time is highly unlikely and almost impossible to calculate since it has not happened once yet.

        • Sabel44

I am tempted to switch to you but there are services like dnscrypt and web content filtering that i like about openDNS.

Your service doesn’t seem to provide these.

        • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

Dnscrypt is something we are looking into and will probably be up and running later this year.
With regard to your other questions, we don’t offer those type of things because it is not really what we are about. I think we would appear hypocritical, after we have so openly promoted our DNS as a censorship-free platform, to use content filtering (even if it was an opt-in feature).
In the past we had considered advert blocking, but decided against it for the reason given above and technical implementation concerns. Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone on O2

        • Anonymous

@BlockAid:disqus  About web filtering: I personally like it for the ability to block connection to fradulent and malicious domains. At least with OpenDNS, it appears to be IP-based (ie blocking set up per IP). That would be a good option. As OpenDNS said, the only censorship I should endure is my own.

      • Glib

The way to do it is exactly the way you mentioned and is the reason for there being multiple DNS options in your network settings.  In happy land, your computer never uses the 2nd DNS server until the first one doesn’t respond in time.

    • Anonymous

Using your DNS, even your own .glue domains fail to load….

  • Abe Lincoln: woot master

The Court of The Hague will fuck this up somehow.

    • Glib

You access DNS servers via IP, so DNS blocking is impossible (which is what most blocking is).  The only way they could do it is to block the physical IP of the server (possible, but unlikely) or seize the server (which is a pain in the butt if it’s in another country, which they likely are).

Also, this is here in Canada, where random litigation is less likely since the loser pays both party’s legal fees.  Also, our laws are favourable for these types of services.

      • Anonymous

Do you mean that the winner normally doesn’t get (part of) the cost of litigation back in America?

        • http://gene-poole.tumblr.com Gene Poole

In Canada, the winner of a litigation trial can go after the opposing council for ‘costs’, and it’s usually approved unless there’s a good reason not to.

So, if you lose, it’s a double slap in your face since you also have to pay their lawyer fees.

  • pitch pine

Good job, opennic project. Maybe they will get some publicity now.

  • Guest

As much as I’d love an alternate DNS system it’s inpracticle since the normal user wont know how to install it and also wont be able to find the website on Google and other search engines. We need something using the current DNS system if we have any chance of making it usable to the general noobs of the interwebs.

    • http://twitter.com/icanhazsake Ninja

It’s dirty easy to configure an alternate DNS just by following the instructions. But I see where you wanna get to. Maybe we should make a step-by-step tutorial with detailed pics and upload to Youtube? For added lulz we can post in the Dutch Pirate Party site in the comments.

      • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

Both OpenNic, dotPirate and BlockAid have detailed instructions for how to do this.

At BlockAid we even have a little application for Windows users that does everything for you, it doesn’t get any easier than that!

        • Guest

I know it’s relevent to the article but you’re still spam promoting your business :P

        • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

Yeh, we got a quick mention in the article, but no link. :(

I don’t see anything wrong in potentially helping people use OpenNic or our DNS and I try not to get too involved, sometimes I can’t help it.

Also, I would prefer that BlockAid not be thought of as a business. Its a completely free service and I think we do some really good things, so I just want more people to use it.

Sadly, ICANN have stopped letting people buy their own extension now. They’re setting up the extensions for the companies which have ordered then letting companies get more extensions in the future.

    • Mindy

“We need something using the current DNS system if we have any chance of making it usable to the general noobs of the interwebs”

ICANN is dominated by the US. This is a chance to educate people on alternatives, more democratic alternatives such as OpenNIC.

    From OpenDNS site:

DNSCrypt is our way of securing the “last mile” of DNS traffic and
resolving (no pun intended) an entire class of serious security concerns
    with the DNS protocol.

    Epic unintended pun is epic.

In any case, we’ll see OpenNIC getting more popular. I’d say that the future holds a decentralized network of dns servers where the browser will check for a few random servers for the information needed and OpenNIC will be one of them. *hint hint*

It’s a great idea, but I don’t see people adopting this anytime soon. Mainly because people would require to change their DNS servers, and many people aren’t going to know how to do that.

    • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

We have already explained it is much easier than most people think. I don’t think that is a valid argument as it takes around the same amount of time as installing a new browser plugin.

      • Am I bovered?

But that isn’t the point.  For this to work it has to “just work”.  If I was to ask a few friends to change their DNS they would say “change what?”.  Most people are not interested, bothered or know enough to care.  As long as they can get to their myface etc they are happy.

        • http://www.blockaid.me/ BlockAid DNS

As someone has already mentioned before, if I comment much more, I could be seen as spamming. But I would point out that we created an application (or “App” for the cool kids) that changes your DNS for you in one click.

You’re correct that people don’t care now, but with things continuing the way they are, they may eventually have too. How many of your friends stream their TV Shows? I have quite a few friends that take to the net for more than a simple fix of social media and I’m guessing you do too. When push comes to shove, people will either learn to use these services or face a barrage of restrictions, I’m rather hoping they will take to the former.

        • Desu1

Maybe those friends aren’t worth having.

        • Anonymous

“just work”. Well, an app changing your windows ipv4 settings is as much as you can hope for. Remember that for any OS today the standard is still to use DNS-server as provided by your choice of gateway (usually your ISP).

All in all changing that default option might be a boon, as no luser unable to alter their pre-set DNS would be able to get optimum service.

A lot of shared web hosts will actually let you set up an account with a dummy or “bogus” top level domain, e.g. mydomain.nul

Therefore I would images it would be entirely possible to use one of the non-ICANN sanctioned TLDs.

It’s weird to see OpenDNS discussed in the context of Open Software. They are not, and their DNS ‘service’ jacks your error traffic to a page they serve full of ads. That IS their business model.

Well this is a big fail… even thepiratebay.pirate is dead…

It works just fine. Did you remember to change your /etc/resolv.conf file? If you happen to be using Windows it will be called something else, but the concept is the same. You can use any number of OpenNIC servers but I used 67.212.90.199 and that works.

1st off: .pirate DNS updates take 24-48 hours to proliferate.

Go to my parked page: black.pirate and click on the host bar at the top. It’s free, can only do one web page a day, and it works with .pirate. There is really no infomation on how dotpirate.me works.

    I use Remote Management.
I only change manage NS records with 2 new glues! The glues name are arbitrary (they can be anything less the 6 characters) and the IP numbers are of your NAMESERVERS ip’s. The 000webhost.com I use, and most hosting places only give you their servers in name format, like NS1.000WEBHOST.COM. You need to convert these over to ip numbers. I used Command Prompt and Ping to do this. This is what you enter into the glue information.

Where I ended up having problems, is because I’m impatient. I’m use to godaddy’s 2 hour dns updates, not 24/48 hour updates. Once you update your glues, wait a couple of days and check it out.

I played around for a while, googled for a while, and finally just waited…hopes this helps.

Also…the banner is not placed there by the company, I placed it there. So this service has no ads, but be careful…they do not have a liberal TOS…

Every site that registers in the dotPirate domain will be challenged. It’s like rallying up all the Pirating sites to one single domain and then eliminating them. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was going to turn around.

Anyone know of any kind of work around to the whole “only available to people using OpenNIC DNS” issue?

I managed to score LastName.pirate (& .geek) and I’d be interested in setting up an email account (using my Gmail account to do all the work) so I could use FirstName@LastName.geek (or .pirate)… But if it’d be restricted to just a few with OpenNIC….
