US Pirate Party Endorses Barack Obama
Written by Ernesto on January 03, 2008The US Pirate Party has no candidate for the upcoming elections, but who do the pirates vote for? Barack Obama, and the party strongly urges all its members to support his campaign, and vote for him in the primaries, and later this year in November.
The Pirate Party just published a press release in which they show their support for Obama, and ask their members to support him as well. Obama is indeed the only candidate who’s even been willing to consider copyright change, the others are more interested in protecting the commercial rights of a few. Other than that, he has a healthy view on how to ensure people’s privacy and he values net neutrality.
Andrew Norton, a spokesperson of the US Pirate Party told TorrentFreak: “We believe in democracy, and progress. Since we are not putting forward a candidate of our own, we stand solidly behind Mr. Obama, as he is the only candidate that seems to realize that personal privacy is a right, not a privilege, and believes that copyright is, as the constitution defines, for progress, rather than profit.”
Mr. Obama clearly understands the important role that the Internet plays in delivering information and communications in general according to the US Pirate Party. A great example of this is the speech he gave at the at the Google campus where he said, “I will take a backseat to no one in my commitment to network neutrality.” He later told TechCrunch: “I will prevent network providers from discriminating in ways that limit the freedom of expression on the Internet.” So, no BitTorrent blocking if it was up to Obama, sorry Comcast.
Don’t want to trust on the Pirate Parties? You can do a votematch here if you’re tired of all the campaign commercials and want to base your decision on what the candidates actually stand for.
Note: all Ron Paul comments will be censored ;)

NEVER trust politicians! they say a lot of things when they are a candidate for something but right after they achieved what they wanted they forget everything they promised.Any president WILL be forced by the industry to do their bidding.
lol ron paul
I agree with that.
I pity the foo’ who don’t vote for copyright change.
Bill Clinton signed the DMCA. And if you wikipedia more recent laws, they are usually generated by democrats. I’ll admit, they have some republican support, but they were generated by democrats. Voting in Obama, a democrat, AKA a big gov lover is not right.
Republicans are for the free market, wouldn’t that be the obvious choice for pirating concerns and net neturality?
not all democrats have the exact same beliefs as others
not all democrats have the exact same beliefs as others
Not specifically, but almost all are pro-bigger government, government regulates more, etc. The more regulation the less piracy will happen. Is the government going to allow bitorrent if they are allowed to regulate it via the net companies?
Bitorrent is allowed because of a free market, and people will switch providers if an ISP blocks it.
In a democrat world, blocking bitorrent wouldn’t take very long. Nationwide.
dont trust politicians, bet you he wont do shit about it either if he gets elected.
It is better to vote for one candidate than spread all votes to many if this one candidate seems like a good choise and the others just alternatives with the same promotion promises.. ‘n’ shit.
Hard to think that the corruption is going to be any lower.

You really can’t think of it as “Democrats = big government, republicans = small government”.
Look how it has been under bush - that is definitally NOT a small government.
I just had to point that out - I don’t support either/any party, they’re both/all useless.
The US Pirate Party. A hapless group founded by internet-fame-eager minors.
If I voted Barack would get my vote.

Hey.. You’re that copyright supporter again.
Hi.
Vote Ron Paul, if you want the free internet!
Hahaha, it’s so cute how Americans think they will get to choose who governs them. That has already been decided for you, now back to your mindless jobs drones. And don’t question your government, otherwise the terrists guna get’cha!!

… free market, wouldn’t that be the obvious choice for pirating concerns and net neturality?
Are you really sure about that?
The unregulated free market allows corporations to do whatever they want to turn a profit. The most profitable position to be in is that of a monopoly. Monopolies are about control of their customers. The assault on net neutrality is being perpetrated by companies that hold near-monopolistic market share in several areas of the US.
Laws are necessary to protect net neutrality. Do not think for a moment that “free market” means freedom.

See.. that’d be funny if it wasn’t true.
You have no choice. Just obey your leaders.
That’s nice and all, but I still think a “Pirate Party” that says on their homepage “We do not support nor condone any unlawful distribution of copyrighted works.” is utterly misleading BS.
Compare that with the Swedish Pirate Party’s declaration of principles:
“All non-commercial copying and use should be completely free. File sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. Culture and knowledge are good things, that increase in value the more they are shared. The Internet could become the greatest public library ever created.”

I completely agree, but the U.S. “Pirate Party” apparently doesn’t. They’re trying to get the goodwill and support of filesharers, who they themselves do not support. Fuck that.
I want a REAL Pirate Party in the U.S., not these wankers. I have no problem with a group with their beliefs existing, but the deceptive name is just low. How about “Ivory Tower Party”?
Who is Ron P aul?
What happened to Pon Raul???!
Clinton should have spent 5 years in prison last time imo, Ubama might be good but.. what happened to pon raul?? :’(
anyways hope you get something else then just a new war after this election..

Not just to pirates. It would be good for the world economy in general. WTO is fucking useless.
It’s a shame that the only ones who have a rat’s chance of winning aren’t the best ones for the job.
Kucinich by all rights should get the nom because he speaks truth to power more so than anyone of them…even that anti-choicer Ron Paul…blech!
Kucinich is the only decent one of the lot.

This is something we have talked over with the US Pirate Party in the past, and the basic reason is, legally, political parties in the US are not allowed to support or condone any actions which is contrary to US law. So, they could say “yeah do it” like the Swedish party does, and thus be excluded from counting as a political party. They can call for the change of the law, they cannot say ‘break the law’. That is one of the basics of US politics. Remember, as anakata has said many times, Sweden is not the USA
Seriously I wish people would actually read or listen to something about Ron Paul, even though some supporters make him look like a major turnoff.
10th Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”
This seems to be the Amendment that most of Washington seems to forget. If we just get back to the Constitution then all will be well.
One more thing… has there been any corporate “pledged” donations from any media company to the Obama campaign? If so, copyright ain’t going anywhere. (Ron Paul accepts NO corporate pledged donations, private citizens only)
Not to rant ;)
no IRS, no income tax, no federal reserve, no money from air, no more illigal wars, more power to the states instead of government, more power to individuals and restored constitutional rights, you will get to keep your privacy, you will get more money in your pockets, internet will be free as would your life…
I thought it was a done deal? is this a joke? its a joke right.. :)

It’s nice rhetoric, thats for certain, but it wouldn’t work like that. You want to change copyright? Sorry, constitution says its there for a limited time, and it is right now. life+70 or 95 years, IS limited. It also says ‘exclusive rights’ bye bye fair use.
You know what else isn’t int he constitution? Monopolies and anticompetative practices. You say internet will be free, yet, ron paul thinks its a good idea to remove any incentive to compete. There will be one provider for all. Network neutrality? not under Ron Paul.
One thing is clear, what he says sounds great in theory, put it into practice, and anyone will even a basic high school diploma can see the horrendous mess that will result. I know the lawyers are all for him - imagine the fun there will be when he abolishes the infrastructure built over the last few years. Its a very ‘actions are great, consequences don’t matter’ attitude, and I’m still shocked and amazed that anyone that is legally competant to vote, and old enough to, and is considering Ron Paul, has made it that far without having killed themselves with the sort of shortsighted actions he stands for.
Read your constitution again, there’s nothing about personal privacy at all, or about regulation of companies. With Ron Paul, every day will be Beacon day, on Facebook.

Nice rhetoric, that’s for sure, but you have absolutely no arguments whatsoever to support any of your claims. By taking away the GOVERNMENT incentive for companies to compete, they will be stuck in what was previously known as the free market. Do your research better. Also, I believe that the USA was far better off before the 1913, before the establishment of new slavery system with the non-gold dollar. Moreover, now I’m certain that the USA pirate party is on a MPAA/RIAA payroll.
Obama get’s my vote in the primaries. I hope Ron Paul gets nominated by the Republicans, that way he can get crushed when this little fad is over. Vote Ron Paul - Let’s remove restrictions on big business so they can monitor our internet and choke bittorrent. Let’s get rid of those little things called rights because I really trust corporations with my privacy and security.
Fuck you. I can’t believe you support freedom of expression, and loose copyright laws and still have the nerve to say “Note: all Ron Paul comments will be censored ;)”
Ernesto, you are a disgrace to the entire filesharing community.
I cannot take them seriously ever again. Democrats want to grow government. This shows that the Pirate party has no clue.
@37 & 38
God, you people are retarded. I hope you get Hillary Clinton, and end up dying in Iran.
The pirate party can go fuck it’s self if they want me to vote for him. There are more important issues then copyright law if you even buy what he says in the first place.
El Diablo, Ron Paul is completely against monitoring and collecting privacy information by companies/CIA and lobbying, unless you agree to it and in national security situations.
@ 38, your an idiot.. seriously..
Paul needs to be Obama’s running mate. The worlds will bow down to them if this happens.
google ron paul
obama / paul would never work out, one is big gov’t the other is small gov’t. that’s what used to be the main difference between repubs and dems

Where do you read “yeah do it” in the following?
“All non-commercial copying and use should be completely free. File sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. Culture and knowledge are good things, that increase in value the more they are shared. The Internet could become the greatest public library ever created.”
It doesn’t even say “we encourage you to…”, it says “…should be encouraged”. Are you telling me that that philosophy is illegal for a U.S. party to express? Calling for change in the law is exactly what it’s doing!
Compare the U.S. Pirate Party to the U.S. Marijuana Party (http://www.usmjparty.com/). They don’t say “yeah do it”, but they don’t say “don’t do it, it’s bad” either, and they’re not shy about the fact that the party is for those who do it:
“WE feel it is time for the 12 million Americans who smoke marijuana on a regular basis to stop hiding their love for this plant and unite as one large body of voters to demand an end to the unconstitutional prohibition of marijuana and the drug war.”
How many million Americans infringe copyright law on a regular basis? Almost all of us, even those who have never TOUCHED P2P (http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20071119/015956.shtml), and probably well over 12 million Americans pirate. Even if we accept the insane idea that a party can’t opine for laws to change, which is all the Swedish declaration does… What the hell law is it that says you have to insult the very people who might support you? “Hey everyone, here’s a link to torrent the latest DVDscreeners” and “Filesharing is bad” are NOT the only options.
The Piratpartiet declaration doesn’t encourage unauthorized sharing of copyright works, either, but neither does it go out of its way to condemn people who do. You say there’s a law that a U.S. party must do the latter? I don’t buy it. The USPP’s condemnation of actual piracy makes them out to be either cynical manipulators or idiots. Either way they’re bad at what they do.
“@ 38, your an idiot.. seriously..”
Your a hypocrite to support loose copyright laws yet at the same time stifle freedom of expression.
Since when was the Economy better in 1913? It was bloated and just on the verge of collapsing…which it did. The Constitution also Congress the power to regulate interstate commerce, ie, pretty much any big business. Granted, the commerce clause is stretched to most retarded things I’ve ever seen (see Wickard v. Filburn) it actually does cover a lot.
they’re ALL horrible, horrible options.
Ron Paul supports net neutrality. He hates big government and big business, which are the one threatening privacy. Obama is questionable, he’s not a consistent voter.(Obama believes in the popular thing right now.) Ron Paul is a consistent voter. Ron Paul believes in leaving people alone and letting them do whatever they want with no government in the way. He wants to pull back our bases out of 120+ countries, which is good for US and the world. There is a reason a lot of people hate the US. We used to promote democracy, and now we’re an imperialist empire. It’s time to go back to how we used to be.

Obviously not just the constitution will be followed. Ron Paul is against monopolies and big business. Government will step in to stop big business domination, but the need to do so is not often. 1 time in 100 years…during Katrina oil companies abused prices.
Privacy laws will always be in effect, and even more so with Ron Paul.
And what the hell do you mean anti competitive? Free Market works by greed and competition. Ron Paul promotes Free Market with making sure no 1 big business has monopoly. He is very against socialist ideas. You are very confused, sir.
Well this shows what a joke this “pirate party” is…
supporting a CFR member and open globalist..

Copyright is the hottest issuse right now. Many fuckin’ asshole candidates wil spout the “well maybe we could look at it again” argument for the sake of the dumb fuckin’ voting public. Sure they will consider it…but only until you’ve voted…then….fuck you….they’ll either say “We looked at the issue and decided we are satisfied with the way things are” or they’ll simply ignore the issue altogether. It’s just one more way for greasy corruption riddled fuckers to get into power. Hey, trust me, if they could get away with saying “Tell you what…you vote for me and i’ll make food, booze and cigarettes free” they’d fuckin’ do it without batting a god damned eyelid. Because my dear blinded friends it would make you all run to the voting stations like lemmings to a fuckin’ cliff. Here endeth the lesson….
I vote for Barack

perhaps you are not aware that the monopolies the free market naturally gravitates toward (RIAA, MPAA, AT&T, etc.) are the ones that are doing these things. less regulation would not help that situation.

ummm… Too be honest, I’m all for internet freedom and shit, but there are more important issues to vote on, like human rights in America. No matter how much is put against internet pirates, we’ll find a way to beat what’s in front of us, we’re the more intelligent people and can easily (comparatively to in real life) get past anything set up to stop us. I think a more important issue would be the rights of gays, lesbians, trans, etc. because those things can’t really be easily overcome without a revolution, and with all the ultra-conservatist-Christian-nutcases, that’ll be hard to do.
Guys, Ron Paul has mentioned that he would make sure that communications companies should not be able to restrict their customers traffic.
Obama’s vague statements are just more politician-speak. Ron Paul is the only candidate that ALWAYS backs up his words with his voting record.
I contributed to his campaign even though I live in Canada, because right now there is a real chance of the first honest US president in decades and that is good for Canada and the world(and pay no attention to the fact that the Corporate Media is purposefully ignoring him, he has a real good shot this year with mass internet access and people being able to find out the truth for themselves)
If only there was a politician like that so that I could be bothered to go out and vote.
Sigh…….

Ron Paul is pro ‘net neutrality’? How can anyone say that? Do some fucking research. He has stated explicitly that he isn’t. He believes that the internet shouldn’t be regulated by any means. The obvious pirate choice would be ron paul!
He is the most renegade out of all of the candidates.

Oh God.. You guys have to wait until November before you can dump Bush into the ocean?
I think Ron Paul would be awesome from the conservative libertarian (which he is) point of view. I do like his support of deregulation of the internet. But he goes to far when it comes to deregulating everything. He wants to put our country back to where it was before the great depression. I believe that this would both have very positive but also very negative effects. I believe in working with regulation in order to promote growth. Regulation that considers the little guy instead of the rich is what I favor. Ron Paul is sort of the opposite of what the republican party is today. But he does hold up what I like about the republican party. I would vote for him if I was a republican. I welcome the change really.
I think Ron Paul would be best for the states right now.

Thats a bunch of hogwash. Politicians are always going to be just that, politicians. If you think any of the candidates were any more innocent then Hillary, then you are deadly mistaken. Just because she is in the public eye more then all the rest combined, does not make her a bad person.
Want to reform the US government and get politicians who aren’t just puppets for the various corporations? Pass a law that special interest groups are no longer allowed to donate to a particular politician’s campaign. Instead, all donations will go into a pool that will be divided eually between all candidates.
Remove the incentive to give corporations everything they ask for and watch how fast the government stops bending over for them.
Of course, such a thing will never happen since the current system is much too corrupt to ever allow any real change.
As for this particular election; It really doesn’t matter who the people vote for, since the American people do NOT actually elect the president. The Electoral College elects the president and although they usually follow the wishes of the people, there’s no guarantee that they will.
The way I see it, history is going to be made this year. The US will either end up with the first black president or the first female one. Anyone who thinks Ron Paul has a chance of winning is delusional.
Free Market works by greed and competition. Ron Paul promotes Free Market with making sure no 1 big business has monopoly. He is very against socialist ideas.
I don’t know a single thing about Ron Paul (except that voting for him would be akin to not voting at all because your vote will have been wasted on a candidate who has no chance to win). But the truth is that people who destroy monopolies are highly socialist because they seek to nationalize production by taking it out of the hands of a few and putting it into the hands of the many.
Destroying monopolies does not necessarily promote free market; it only promotes the public interest in a market by increasing consumer knowledge.

The Pirate Bay made a major mistake by endorsing a candidate.
Don’t get me wrong, I agree with every single one of the reasons Pirate Bay made for endorsing Obama, however, let’s not forget who the media gatekeepers are.
The candidates who Hollywood, the press, and other media outlets like are the ones who get the most favorable timeslots, coverage, and interviews. A Pirate Bay endorsement is enough of a reason for the media outlets to throw a monkey wrench into Obama’s campaign.
So while I agree with them wholeheartedly, I REALLY wish they kept quiet.

Why does everybody automatically assume that if you accept a gift that you owe that person a favor. If people gave me money for no reason I would take it. I do not believe to be good you need to be selfless. If you think of an RIAA made media torrent as a gift, then most of us here have already accepted gifts from the RIAA.
And dammit, enough with all the Ron Paul bullshit! He’s not the next Jesus Christ, people!
The only reason why so many blogosphere nutbars support him is because it’s in vogue to do so.

Nothing wrong with liking men, if they’re old enough to consent. But i digress, he’s pretty Christian, and more Christian than most Catholic priests, so I don’t think he likes it up the butt. But that’s why I wouldn’t vote for him. Personally LGBT rights are more important at the moment than destroying the RIAA and what not through politics, we can at least wait another 4 years for that to happen, or let them run out of business in enough time.

In case you haven’t noticed, Republicans are trying to restrict user freedom on the Internet, and give full control of access to the big telecom companies. The Democrats believe (like republicans) that content/intellectual property owners must be protected and compensated for their use. But, only republicans are trying to restrict our freedom to access any server on the Internet. This is fact, not fiction, and no amount of talking-points and spin can conceal this truth.

The kind of change and unity that Obama is offering is not the kind that this country needs. Everything comes with a price to it, look at his proposed methodology, look at his voting record and look at the stances he’s advertising. Are they good for the county? (Never mind the world is he and what he stands for good for the country? The rest of the world is NOT part of the process)
Any party lending support to a candidate that condones another round of amnesty for illegal aliens or one that ignores the problems caused by the sanctuary cities that have begun to act as city states; have either not looked at the big picture or they have their own agenda. I’m thinking that perhaps these pirate party member are actually Democrats in disguise. Otherwise they would have recognized Ron Paul for his record. Rather than some wet behind the ears not even a completed term under his belt.
As for my personnal selection, it’s neither of the two mentioned.
Dr. Ron Paul says this on Internet regulations:
“I don’t understand all those problems that we face, although the point I make is I have a healthy disregard and fear of the bureaucrats doing it because once you do that, those big companies are going to regulate, they’re going to be the lobbyists and the politicians that regulate the law, and I think you’ll be in worse shape.”
Which is what we already have so he is correct!
I like Kucinich and Obama too, but think we need Ron Paul at this time.
Gov’nt in the US has become bloated and useless!
does anyone else see the irony of an article pretty much talking about freedom and democracy closing with “…comments will be censored”?? lmao
I’m not American but all I can say about your now ongoing elections is don’t vote for Clinton I think she’ll start off a bit better than Bush and then just get a whole lot worse…
If somehow Barack wins then i think it’ll be a stale term with no real change either way….
I also know you have some Religious nut-jobs who get a lot of faith votes and may do ok which is bad as they’ll force or try and force their beliefs into laws…
Also since I use the internet a lot I Know of Ron Paul and FFS vote for him! at least do some research on him/everyone else(real research) Especially since he gets basically ignored.
One last thing it’s people who say something like: “Oh he’ll never win so don’t waste your vote” that’ll help them not win if you all just stuck to your guns and don’t budge the votes go up they’d get recognized and possibly more people would join. …you never know…

Still, the pirate party are jackasses for backing a big government party. It shows a lack of care for their “party” by not having the slightest clue on the issues. Asshats.
A vote for a democrat or a republican, is a vote for Corporate America. You can’t win no matter the way you choose. The only difference between the two, is how much cheese they choose to hand out the nations poor. They have all been bought and sold to the highest bidder.
I vote to get rid of corporately funded lobbyist. That would be the first small step in the right direction.

Ever hear of the Napoleanic wars? A big reason Napoleon couldn’t win was because he had to leave a buttload of troops in Spain to fight the insurgents so it didn’t become a boiling pot of rebel soldiers that could launch a real attack against him. That’s just like Iraq is the the US. If we just left now nothing positive would EVER come out of it, other than a bunch of countries with a grudge against us, another country ruled by a ridiculous theocracy, and a major threat to the people of America and just about every other Westernized country because extremeist Muslims hate any Westernized country. Anyone who promises to take our troops out now is lying for votes, or is a terrorist themself. I’m against this war and all, but it’s here and just leaving won’t solve the problem.
Anyway, bigger government doesn’t always mean more Big Brother effect. I could make a government that was huge without any stupid survailance on my own people. Plus, completely destroying all of the current offices and committees and what not would put so many people out of a job, and we have enough people trying to live as a McDonald’s frycook, last thing we need is more of that shit popping up all over the country. Next thing you know we’ll have McDonald’s brand filet mingion and BurgerKing brand fish filets in the supermarket…

When you really get down to it democrats understand that politicians are naturally corrupt. Republicans are stuck in the idea that every piece of bullshit fed to them is the golden truth. I know there are some democrats and republicans are different in their own respects. But as a whole that is just the way it looks. This new election does show a change to this image. I do understand the the U.S. is supposed to fall in line with the United Abominations rules, but really, why should a country back down just because a bunch of cowards didn’t want to join in? To say a war is illegal, or even legal, is just silly at best.
I even find it funny that we try to set rules for war. What a joke. War is Hell, and in Hell, there are no rules.
Don’t think I pro war by saying this either, I’m just saying.

Politicians are all snakes, and this is a shameless promotion for the democrats by abunch of fucking tools who nobody cares about anyhow. Fuck the pirate party. All anyone cares about is saving themselves money on music, movies, software, and games. Thats all its ever really been about. We’ve just found ways to justify it to ourselves over the years.
also…. If you don’t like Ron Paul its because you’re a stupid dumb bastard who has never taken the time to really observe all the candidates, what they stand for and how they holdup those values when being debated on them. You can “lol” all you want but Ron Paul stands up for what he believes in and there are only really two candidates who do that in this election so perhaps they will get to run vs each other and may the best choice win regardless of party.

Get educated. The USA Constitution requires a Bill of War to be presented to both houses of congress, and upon passage a signature by the president. No Bill of War was ever presented to congress, the actions taken by this white house are in clear violation of the Constituion. The “war” is illegal and unlawful as it is not a true war but an executive action of force.
Anyone who is still caught up in the
