US Pirate Party Endorses Barack Obama

Written by Ernesto on January 03, 2008

The US Pirate Party has no candidate for the upcoming elections, but who do the pirates vote for? Barack Obama, and the party strongly urges all its members to support his campaign, and vote for him in the primaries, and later this year in November.

US Pirate Party Endorses Barack ObamaThe Pirate Party just published a press release in which they show their support for Obama, and ask their members to support him as well. Obama is indeed the only candidate who’s even been willing to consider copyright change, the others are more interested in protecting the commercial rights of a few. Other than that, he has a healthy view on how to ensure people’s privacy and he values net neutrality.

Andrew Norton, a spokesperson of the US Pirate Party told TorrentFreak: “We believe in democracy, and progress. Since we are not putting forward a candidate of our own, we stand solidly behind Mr. Obama, as he is the only candidate that seems to realize that personal privacy is a right, not a privilege, and believes that copyright is, as the constitution defines, for progress, rather than profit.”

Mr. Obama clearly understands the important role that the Internet plays in delivering information and communications in general according to the US Pirate Party. A great example of this is the speech he gave at the at the Google campus where he said, “I will take a backseat to no one in my commitment to network neutrality.” He later told TechCrunch: “I will prevent network providers from discriminating in ways that limit the freedom of expression on the Internet.” So, no BitTorrent blocking if it was up to Obama, sorry Comcast.

Don’t want to trust on the Pirate Parties? You can do a votematch here if you’re tired of all the campaign commercials and want to base your decision on what the candidates actually stand for.

Note: all Ron Paul comments will be censored ;)

NEVER trust politicians! they say a lot of things when they are a candidate for something but right after they achieved what they wanted they forget everything they promised.Any president WILL be forced by the industry to do their bidding.

I pity the foo’ who don’t vote for copyright change.

Bill Clinton signed the DMCA. And if you wikipedia more recent laws, they are usually generated by democrats. I’ll admit, they have some republican support, but they were generated by democrats. Voting in Obama, a democrat, AKA a big gov lover is not right.

Republicans are for the free market, wouldn’t that be the obvious choice for pirating concerns and net neturality?

not all democrats have the exact same beliefs as others

Not specifically, but almost all are pro-bigger government, government regulates more, etc. The more regulation the less piracy will happen. Is the government going to allow bitorrent if they are allowed to regulate it via the net companies?

Bitorrent is allowed because of a free market, and people will switch providers if an ISP blocks it.

In a democrat world, blocking bitorrent wouldn’t take very long. Nationwide.

dont trust politicians, bet you he wont do shit about it either if he gets elected.

9 Jan 03, 2008 at 22:38 by ---

It is better to vote for one candidate than spread all votes to many if this one candidate seems like a good choise and the others just alternatives with the same promotion promises.. ‘n’ shit.

Hard to think that the corruption is going to be any lower.

You really can’t think of it as “Democrats = big government, republicans = small government”.

Look how it has been under bush - that is definitally NOT a small government.

I just had to point that out - I don’t support either/any party, they’re both/all useless.

Hahaha, it’s so cute how Americans think they will get to choose who governs them. That has already been decided for you, now back to your mindless jobs drones. And don’t question your government, otherwise the terrists guna get’cha!!

Are you really sure about that?
The unregulated free market allows corporations to do whatever they want to turn a profit. The most profitable position to be in is that of a monopoly. Monopolies are about control of their customers. The assault on net neutrality is being perpetrated by companies that hold near-monopolistic market share in several areas of the US.

Laws are necessary to protect net neutrality. Do not think for a moment that “free market” means freedom.

See.. that’d be funny if it wasn’t true.

You have no choice. Just obey your leaders.

That’s nice and all, but I still think a “Pirate Party” that says on their homepage “We do not support nor condone any unlawful distribution of copyrighted works.” is utterly misleading BS.

Compare that with the Swedish Pirate Party’s declaration of principles:

“All non-commercial copying and use should be completely free. File sharing and p2p networking should be encouraged rather than criminalized. Culture and knowledge are good things, that increase in value the more they are shared. The Internet could become the greatest public library ever created.”

I completely agree, but the U.S. “Pirate Party” apparently doesn’t. They’re trying to get the goodwill and support of filesharers, who they themselves do not support. Fuck that.

I want a REAL Pirate Party in the U.S., not these wankers. I have no problem with a group with their beliefs existing, but the deceptive name is just low. How about “Ivory Tower Party”?
