I wonder how many people voted for the Pirate Party just because their name was cooler than the other people's?

I don't see how file-sharing is any different from grabbing a blank tape and making copies of songs off the radio. Movie stealing is the same as making a copy off the free to air set, albeit a rather late copy, with adds but hey.
It may only be a small splash in a big pond but I'm glad the Pirate Party have made it far enough foe people to realise they can have a voice. Now I DARE you all to boycott Macdonalds and show up at the next Bilderberg hotel :-)

[...] addthis_pub = 'Regeneration'; Posted by Regeneration on June 12th, 2009, 03:06 AM The Pirate Party has won a huge victory in the Swedish elections and is marching on to Brussels. After months of campaigning against well established parties, the Pirate Party has gathered enough votes to be guaranteed a seat in the European Parliament. When the Swedish Pirate Party was founded in early 2006, the majority of the mainstream press were skeptical, with some simply laughing it away. But they were wrong to dismiss this political movement out of hand. Today, the Pirate Party accomplished what some believed to be the impossible, by securing a seat in the European Parliament. With 99.9% of the districts counted the Pirates have 7.1 percent of the votes, beating several established parties. This means that the Pirate Party will get at least one, but most likely two of the 18 (+2) available seats Sweden has at the European Parliament. When we asked Pirate Party leader Rick Falkvinge about the outcome, he told TorrentFreak: ?We?ve felt the wind blow in our sails. We?ve seen the polls prior to the election. But to stand here, today, and see the figures coming up on that screen? What do you want me to say? I?ll say anything? ?Together, we have today changed the landscape of European politics. No matter how this night ends, we have changed it,? Falkvinge said. ?This feels wonderful. The citizens have understood it?s time to make a difference. The older politicians have taken apart young peoples? lifestyle, bit by bit. We do not accept that the authorities? mass-surveillance,? he added. Read the entire article at TorrentFreak.
"this is NOT simply a ‘single issue’ concern"

But,Use-https-Dummy - it's being treated here as a single issue and, it would seem, by the Pirate party. It's an issue. It needs to be discussed and reviewed in the light of new technology and new cultures - how to take account of those, while protecting legitimate interests of people who rely on what they create for their livelihood and the people and organisations who work with them to achieve that, but ignoring the greed culture of big business which exploits them. But it ain't the most important issue, even for people who are really keen to get it. And calling it "digital rights" doesn't give it anything but a false legitimacy, tho that's a common way of trying it on. "I want it, so it must be my right". Remember that there aren't only rights, there are duties too - and there are rights for people on the other side of the argument.

It does need discussing. things need to change in an appropiate way.
But let's not get carried away by unfounded propaganda.

I’m amazed. I hadn’t realised this election was only about file-sharing, whatever that is. I don’t recall it getting a mention in any of the publicity or newspaper coverage I saw."

your mistaken Be-mused, this is NOT simply a ‘single issue’ concern , its far greater than that, once you consider the whole EU, and the other parts of the world.

the points made here for instance...

http://www.openrightsgroup.org/2009/06/what-do-the-eu-results-and-pirate-party-mean-for-digital-rights/

"Politicians would be making a mistake to simply mock or ignore this new if eccentrically-named political force.

The Pirate Party have shown that politicians can lose their jobs if they fail to defend our rights.

They have demonstrated that young people want the public benefit from the new digital world.

The Pirate Party have demonstrated that privacy rights and fair copyright systems matter to people enough to vote for them.

Their election will open up a debate about how well the public interest is served by our current copyright and patent laws.

Their position is for a five year copyright term, and a file sharing exception.

These are somewhat extreme positions – but the very respectable ‘cultural flat rate’ proposal might in practice be something similar to a payment made in exchange for a file sharing exception.

And many copyright academics feel the economically optimal term for copyright is nearer 15 years than the life plus 70 years that most authored works can claim.

"

"Privacy concerns have also been strong a factor in their election.

Sweden has seen resistance to implementing the Data Retention Directive, and the same link to protection of citizen’s interests has been made.

These are serious debates, and by and large, existing political voices, with a few notable exceptions, have failed in their duty to protect our fundamental human rights."

The record labels, recording studios and producers have always taken the lions share of profits leaving little for the artists .Put these people out of business and the artist will survive the vampires however will perish leaving all profit to artists.THE CD IS DEAD,it is not stealing when all the consumer is doing is finally trying to take their life back after getting raped(over paying) for so long.

Anyway - I'm sure when I find out about it I'll be happy to pay my share to get the advantage of whatever it might be. Tho I do seem to be able to get plenty of culture without it.

Fascism means that the people have no rights. Americans have no real rights. We did not beat fascism in WWII, but rather a few fascist countries.
Copyright does not protect the rights of other people, rather the money that the industry can make. It takes away the right for one person to share his own property with others.

You keep saying how I'm saying that I have a right to steal things. A LAUGHABLE CLAIM. By saying this, you prove my point. I will assume that you mean I 'steal' from the industry. THIS IS INCORRECT. I accept things given to me by others who own it. The fact that the government can make it illegal for people to give things that they own to others proves that this country is fascism. Fascism is not a thing, but an idea. You can't beat an idea in a war, but rather the people that express that idea. As you can see, Fascism is in the dictionary. If we beat it, then wouldn't it not exist anymore?

To actually STEAL a song or something from the industry, I would have to erase it from all of their computers and servers and change the copyright to say that I own it and then rewrite any DRM on it to say that it belonged to me.

I would love to do that, but I am not doing it when I pirate things. Somebody else who bought it is letting me use it. Where is stealing involved??
People DON'T GET PAID FOR THEIR WORK
THE INDUSTRY IS PAID FOR THEIR WORK. THE ARTISTS WERE PAID FOR THEIR WORK WHEN THEY SOLD IT TO THE INDUSTRY.

And then you say that I'm delusional because I think that people can give something that THEY BOUGHT to another person??? Are you kidding???

By all means, I WILL keep on gloating about the fact that I can give something I BOUGHT to another, or take something somebody bought when they offer it to me.

What makes you think that nobody owes me anything, or even that I think that anybody owes anybody anything?? As a matter of fact, my friend owes me a game of golf because I paid for both of us last time. You are wrong. Why do you think that I don't have a job? I'm in High School, first of all. I'm not a hobo-pirate, no matter how much I want to be one. And even so, I DO have a job. Show me where I made you think that I don't have a job in my writing. I DON'T. ANYWHERE.
You just keeeep on making those crazy assumptions, like that I don't have a job, or that I think it's OK to steal, or that piracy is stealing because big brother told you so.
