I simply cannot afford many(most) textbooks that I want so that I can educate myself. They're damn expensive. And do those who benefit from those astronomical prices really need that money? I'm not sure that that's the case.
The practical reality and demands of the cards that many people are dealt overcome, I think, the abstract ideals we strive for. One of those realities is that the Internet is a democratising force. It levels the playing field. Not that long ago universities were the repository of human knowledge, now the Internet is taking on that role more and more, even with the more advanced, specific knowledge. I'm from Eastern Europe, and I can't afford to pay thousands of dollars per year for a creative writing program in English at a UK or American university. I will do everything in my power, though, to obtain the information taught there for a price that doesn't leave me in debt for the next god knows how many years of my life, and places like Library Pirate help me to achieve that.
Perhaps a more extreme example would better illustrate what I'm trying to say. Would you deny a citizen of a drought-stricken African country, who has access to the Internet but not to a decent university, access to a textbook about, say, irrigation techniques that conserve water in dry climates? Would you deny him access, knowing that if he put the techniques found in that book into action, a whole village would be saved from starvation? I know I wouldn't.
