As for the China bashers/defenders: The quality of life and political freedom in China varies enormously based on, you guessed it, class and regional income. Some communities have it great, while others can’t even get basic health-care and clean drinking water. Just like America! Some dissidents are lightly monitored or ignored, others get raided and tormented regularly. Just like America!

However, their nationalistic pretensions are twice as irritating and pompous as ours, which is quite a feat, so you can dock them for being louder and more annoying.

But people making comments about China seem to be mainly BRAINWASHED AMERICANS.

Most of the Chinese think that their government is pretty good and don’t want a democracy. All they care about is a better lifestyle — which is what their government is trying to achieve.

So they throw in a little bit of ideology, big deal! Turn on Fox News and you’ll see ideology until it makes you sick.

The Russian government has already proved that it’s unable to solve problems it is obliged to solve, and keeps screwing up more and more, so I think it’s only a matter of time for democracy to win.

The west today have more choices then China, seriously can a chinese group make a party called “Pirate Party” and run for seats on the government in China? Can the Chinese people speak out about the government without fear?

Can you really say you have a choice, the US and UK two party systems… and in the UK there is no difference between the policies of either. The two parties sit in parliament spending most of their time arguing against their opposition rather than for the benefit of the country. At least the Chinese government is efficient about what it does, from what I have heard the majority of the US stimulus package has not even been spent yet… how on earth is it going to stimulate anything if most of it sits in a bank account for a year?

I think you are right I should not have used the word “single” and I apologize, still although I like the russian people I don’t see the government as being liberal or being democratic, it is all controlled by the government and that is bad for the russian society and the reason is very basic, there is no human being in the face of the earth capable of imagining all scenarios for every situation therefore there is no way any government in the world can make policies to manage anything and therefore the more state control you have the less flexibility society get to solve their own problems.

With regards to copyright protection in China… its a joke. I don’t even think most Chinese people think it is illegal to share copyrighted content. I think most of you have missed the funny/interesting side here. China is truely rife with piracy – even major shops sell pirate DVD’s.

Yet the agency is spending its time on the comparatively small issue of educational material. Educational material that will be written in Chinese, by a Chinese company, published by a Chinese printer and sold in a Chinese bookshop. Rather than protecting foreign content which makes up more than 50% of the pirated music, films and TV series.

Give China a chance… One day it will be more successful than the West without a doubt.

Yes, the CPJ information is correct and it’s a shame of modern Russia. I feel very sorry about that. But it is not correct to say that “every single person that spoke their minds against the government (Russian) died mysteriously”.

I repeat, there are newspapers, sites and tv channels in Russia that seriously criticize the official politics. Though they are often threatened, they still exist.

Yes, NTV was bought and all the serious programs left the channel and so did the journalists so now National Television doesn’t differ much from official channels. But even before that happened the channel wasn’t independent, it was owned by Vladimir Gusinsky, a businessman who competed with others that supported Eltsyn’s politics, so it’s quite natural that the channel criticized this politics as well, although to criticize Eltsyn’s politics it was enough to tell the truth about it.

As for the current political system in Russia, I would define it as an autoritarian-bureaucratic oligarchy with corrupted officials closely associated with business and criminals.

China isn’t communist anymore! It’s u.s.a of copy-lobbies wet dream, swarms of potential lawsuits,remember 1:2 ratio of citizents:lawsuits was and in some extent still is;(and yes u.s.a, that “land” doesn’t deserve CAPS in it’s name).
