Despite the “flashiness” of cities like Shanghai, one must remember there are over 850,000,000 peasants in the Chinese countryside who have been promised more money and better conditions by the Chinese Government. This condition was not like Japan, even 30 years ago. Also, the 850,000,000 peasants are prepared to create considerable social unrest to get what they have been promised and the Government members will not be wanting to give up their current position, income and power because they know if they fail to deliver, their days are numbered. This explains why communists are shitting bricks when chinese peasants are reading playboy and hustler and wanna play with themselves....

Seriously, stop using my handle to post defamatory comments about me. Everybody knows that it's not actually me posting those messages, and it makes the arguments on your side that actually have some rationality to them seem weak because people like the posters I'm replying to are on your side.

(Then again, I should also stop using this handle as well. XD - Mr. Briggs)

It is never pointless to scapegoat one in this particular case. governments everywhere are screwing their own people so if the article is about china is time to talk about the bad things that government does.

One step at a time, one country at a time scapegoat all of them.

Well, my point was that the problems are the same EVERYWHERE right now. Corruption, human trafficking, heinous abuses of the prison systems, zero environmental protection, torture, genocide, crackdowns on civil liberties and free discourse, and systematized deprivation of the lower classes. This is going on everywhere, all over the world. And the "more democratic" nations are enabling the "worse" ones. Scapegoating this country or that one is just picking which atrocities are more or less atrocious than the others. Pointless.

Will you dumbasses let people die in front of you because america do it too?

Hey, I'll bet we'll be hearing wealthy Americans making a slight variation on the same argument for why we should shell out tens of thousands for college lectures and course materials instead of getting them for free like they do in most other major world countries.

As for the China bashers/defenders: The quality of life and political freedom in China varies enormously based on, you guessed it, class and regional income. Some communities have it great, while others can't even get basic health-care and clean drinking water. Just like America! Some dissidents are lightly monitored or ignored, others get raided and tormented regularly. Just like America!

However, their nationalistic pretensions are twice as irritating and pompous as ours, which is quite a feat, so you can dock them for being louder and more annoying.

That is true that most of kids in school dont like to read and when you tell them to do their homework they dont want to. People dont like to be told what to do. So it looks like china is the leading country in the world for a reason. that is fact, sure everyone has opinon about what country is evil and not, which is just stupid. people are people anywhere you go. there is know different you are dumbed down and not able to think for yourself and see whole picture if u can not see that PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE and it is fucked and same everyone. who cares really. They are basically using reverse psychology. If you tell someone they are not allowed to do something than of course they want to do it and will find a way. especially if it will benefit them. and it is not too difficult to find a way to bypass all china's bullshit internet filters.

OK so they shouldn't have confiscated educational material.

But people making comments about China seem to be mainly BRAINWASHED AMERICANS.

Most of the Chinese think that their government is pretty good and don't want a democracy. All they care about is a better lifestyle --- which is what their government is trying to achieve.

So they throw in a little bit of ideology, big deal! Turn on Fox News and you'll see ideology until it makes you sick.

The Russian government has already proved that it's unable to solve problems it is obliged to solve, and keeps screwing up more and more, so I think it's only a matter of time for democracy to win.

@104 Sep 16, 2009 at 20:59 by Ma Long:

The west today have more choices then China, seriously can a chinese group make a party called "Pirate Party" and run for seats on the government in China? Can the Chinese people speak out about the government without fear?

No, they can't this make the chinese people evil? of course not, but it makes the chinese government a dictatorship and authoritarian.

The west have problems? of course they do, that is why we come here to bitch about how governments everywhere are trying to take our rights and freedoms away and when we are lucky once in a while someone let out a good idea that we the normal joe's and mary's can use to fight back and say no.

You want to hear that I don't think that chinese people are evil? I can do that, the chinese people are great I had chinese friends and they are all cool, now you want me to say that the chinese government is not that bad? sorry that I cannot. It is my opinion based on my friends, experiences and the media that the chinese government is made up of a bunch of power hungry SOBs that don't care about their own people.

Can you really say you have a choice, the US and UK two party systems... and in the UK there is no difference between the policies of either. The two parties sit in parliament spending most of their time arguing against their opposition rather than for the benefit of the country. I hear your issue regarding no change of power... I am not in defence of that system, nor am I about to say that the UK's system is any better. At least the Chinese government is efficient about what it does, from what I have heard the majority of the US stimulus package has not even been spent yet... how on earth is it going to stimulate anything if most of it sits in a bank account for a year?

Look all I am saying is, China is not evil, the people are not oppressed (at least to the level that most people seem to believe)... BUT they have a long way to come. That said the US has a way to come too... the death penalty how draconian is that.

@98 Sep 16, 2009 at 13:14 by Wednesday Addams:

I think you are right I should not have used the word "single" and I apologize, still although I like the russian people I don't see the government as being liberal or being democratic, it is all controlled by the government and that is bad for the russian society and the reason is very basic, there is no human being in the face of the earth capable of imagining all scenarios for every situation therefore there is no way any government in the world can make policies to manage anything and therefore the more state control you have the less flexibility society get to solve their own problems.

@101 Sep 16, 2009 at 15:59 by Ma Long:

China is not a communist state is an authoritarian(regulate everything) dictatorship(commanded by one person or a group that never leaves power because there are no mechanism to do so) and is relentless trying to control every aspect that could undermine their power, if it will be big economically and militarily probably yes if they don't screw thing s up they could be the next super power the real question is, are the people well?

I see slavery, sweatshops, degrading work conditions and you are trying to insinuate that this is ok or that it should be ignored somehow?

Bush got ousted and his party along with him this would happen in China?

People in the U.S. can change things, people in China cannot one could evenly boldly state that, that power along makes the american people more strong thenthe chinese people who are at the mercy of their government. That is the difference between the west and china, in china there is no hope for change people have to get resigned to a life of servitude and obedience to their master while in the west at least you have the illusion of control you get hope for your future and you can enact change if you are willing enough, you don't have to by arms to make a point you buy votes and that is great in china the only way to change things right now is to buy guns and go make a revolution what is not that good so what there is to rejoice about the political system in china?

Most people here are fighting for the right for their freedom of expression, freedom for culture, privacy which china has none and you want sympathy for the chinese government? are you crazy or something?

I studied in Chinese University so I understand China better than most Westerners. For all of you who think China is evil... you are misguided. China may well be run by the 'Communist Party' but I can tell you now it is more Capitalist than the UK... If you don't earn enough for a bowl of rice then there is no government hand out. The government owns the majority of the important industries like transport and the media but private business is HUGE in China and the gap between the rich and the poor is equally huge. As for some of the ridiculous comments about people being scared of even talking about their government in a bad light... its not the case at all (that said I think they might think twice about protesting). Chinese people will forever talk of how they have the oldest culture; which may well be true... but they still have a lot of development they are considered a 'developed country'.

With regards to copyright protection in China... its a joke. I don't even think most Chinese people think it is illegal to share copyrighted content. I think most of you have missed the funny/interesting side here. China is truely rife with piracy - even major shops sell pirate DVD's.

Yet the agency is spending its time on the comparatively small issue of educational material. Educational material that will be written in Chinese, by a Chinese company, published by a Chinese printer and sold in a Chinese bookshop. Rather than protecting foreign content which makes up more than 50% of the pirated music, films and TV series.

Give China a chance... One day it will be more successful than the West without a doubt.

Yes, the CPJ information is correct and it's a shame of modern Russia. I feel very sorry about that. But it is not correct to say that "every single person that spoke their minds against the government (Russian) died mysteriously".

I repeat, there are newspapers, sites and tv channels in Russia that seriously criticize the official politics. Though they are often threatened, they still exist.

Yes, NTV was bought and all the serious programs left the channel and so did the journalists so now National Television doesn't differ much from official channels. But even before that happened the channel wasn't independent, it was owned by Vladimir Gusinsky, a businessman who competed with others that supported Eltsyn's politics, so it's quite natural that the channel criticized this politics as well, although to criticize Eltsyn's politics it was enough to tell the truth about it.

As for the current political system in Russia, I would define it as an autoritarian-bureaucratic oligarchy with corrupted officials closely associated with business and criminals.

the usa have secret jails. In other countries. Many guantanamo prisoners have been outsourced there. And tortured...

Yes you can complain. But nobody listens. That's just a different position in the totalitarian scale.

But who knows for how long ?

The financial crisis may well accelerate the process. Fascism isn't dead, and rulers prefer that option to fairness.

Think about the differences between a purely fascist state like germany during the second war, and the usa today towards all their 'colonies'...

Why would a torrent site be interested in China's pirated books is beyond me, it looks like none of the commenters above know much about China or actually lived in China, and the last thing I want to do is discuss China in a torrent site, hehe.

But just to clarify, what they meant by "Those pirated teaching materials especially harm the healthy development of the country’s youth" is probably these pirated books are full of errors or of very poor quality, so they could misled the student and cause them to get poor scores in exam. Some people suspect these books are banned because they spread democracy or nonsense like that, that just shows how poorly you understood China. Do you seriously believe people would pay to buy books about democracy? Those publishers are not charity, they print pirated books to get money. And what Children books sells best? They're the books helping them to prepare for exams, thus the term "teaching material". It's amusing to see such a innocent operation generated such suspicion, a fine example of the gap between cultures in a globalized world.

Anyway I'm getting off topic, what I came here to ask is, anybody knows what happened to demonoid? Is it gotten shutdown again or just hardware problem?

They most probably only shutdown the publications that they wanted to censor. And the numbers reported is likely to be made up. What an ignorant government, they could've stop piracy on other things rather than on education.

China isn't a communist nation it's closer to socialism. Doesn't matter anyway, it's fucked no matter what you call it, but that doesn't mean you should call it a form of government that has been given negative meaning because of our capitalist view on life and is in-fact a very good idea however nigh impossible in practice due to the fact that a community where everyone is equal could only be accomplished in very small groups and still then would be impossible simply because as pack animals humans must always have someone who leads them.

There is no trace of communism in China.

That's just the term that's been used by american propaganda over the years, so people feared communism.

China is a brutal oligarchy, like the usa or every other occidental countries are. Except it's closer to the concept developped in Orwell's 1984 than the usa.

And don't be fooled by such words. Since the patriot acts and guantanamo, the difference between a totalitarian state and a "democracy" in the media's sense, is as thin as cigarette paper.

It's good there are still people to think they live in free countries, thanks to you sheeple, the world keeps following its path to global state terrorism.

@78 Sep 16, 2009 at 07:37 by Wednesday Addams:

List of journalists murdered in Russia.
http://cpj.org/reports/2006/11/russia-murders.php

On BBC in 2001:

<blockquote>
Russian journalism comes under fire
By Paul Jenkins
BBC's Storyville programme

In April 2001, the previously independent Russian TV channel NTV was taken over by the giant Gazprom industrial conglomerate. </blockquote>

You tell me because if I was to use a term for the actual Russian government I would use "Authoritarian Dictatorship", which I think is pretty bad.

I lived under one once and I know one when I see it.

@ 22

i research both open source media and newsreport from different sources,
yes there are alot of things happening around the world but media companies are owned by private corporations who aim to profit and not to tell the news.
so meanwhile you might hear whats going on in Bhurma or Haiti, but newsreporters spread lies about for example obama healthcare "death panels", or simple show more sports crap that only retards care about.

thankgoodness for the internet to know whats going on these days.
and people should go for the internet for better news and criticize current stupid media.
