Great movie. I loved the way it was set in South Africa and not the USA like everything else.

Found a soundboard from the movie too:

Ok here is the deal.
Theater sales have been up 10% in the last 10 years and DVD sales has dropped 1%. Fuck people who aren't happy with 100-million dollars.

One million people downloaded it, but that does not mean that all these people would have seen the movie i n theaters, or even seen it on DVD

@ Jeff:

If that's the price people are willing to pay, then why we're here to talk about pirates and million of downloads? Am I missing something?

Your luxury theatre is full of people willing to pay for it, but for one of the people willing to pay 25 bucks to go into a theatre, there are 100 people not willing to pay that much, indeed, either because they cannot afford that much, or for other reasons.

Anyhow, I won't give up to have my entertainment just because the MAFIAA is greedy. I'll keep to download stuff before to buy it, and there's nothing they can do to stop me and the many people like me, unless of course to change their behiavour.

Pharmaceutical industries do also make their meds very expensive, but here in the EU we're not too much worried about it, we get lifesavers and other important meds for free; other meds are expensive, yes, but there are alternatives. Not like the US hospitals who's asking a patient if they got insurance before to let them in, but this is another discussion.

@ Jeff:

The same analogy can be made with MP3s and movies, what we download are just samples. Bad quality, or let's say downgraded quality. It's not the real full quality thing.

So you get why I insist it's just a "try before to buy" kind of thing. If I want to have the full quality thing I have to buy the real stuff.

You said: “I don’t want to make these greedy corporations richer at the expense of the poor people who does not even have enough for a living.”

Sorry dude, but that is a pretty ridiculous statement. We are talking about entertainment here, not life or death. If someone can't afford to go to the movies and has to wait to rent the movie on DVD or pay per view to see it (or even wait until it airs on free TV) they aren't going to die. If you can't afford something, you don't buy it. They aren't preying on anyone. You don't need movies and music to live. This is a leisure item. The reason it costs so much to go to the movies is because that is the price people are willing to pay. Near me there is a luxury theater with big reclining leather chairs, all digital screening rooms and a great food selection. At it costs $25 USD to see a movie there (more than twice the average theater) and it is sold out every week. Why? Because people are willing to pay for it. If you can't afford to go to the movies then don't go. It is that simple. Entertainment companies are not sucking the blood out of anyone. Save that discourse for the pharmaceutical industry.

I don't want to you to think that I feel sorry for a lot of the media companies. I do think they need to change how they do business. It is a customer driven business. If your customers are telling you they want your product in a certain way and you are not willing to deliver it that way they will find it somewhere else. As for them being greedy, I don't see it like that. 99cents for a song is fair. A lot of work went into the recording and promoting of that music and I think paying 99cents for something you can own and listen to as much as you want is a fair price. Just like I think around $15 is a fair price for a DVD. Sure it can be expensive to go to the theater and watch a movie, but you don't have to. You can just as easily wait until it comes out on pay per view or DVD and rent it. Where I take exception is when people download. I see it like this: If you pay to see a movie in the theater you are paying for that viewing of the movie. You aren't paying to own it, you are paying to see it once. Later if you buy it on DVD you are paying to own it. Paying for a viewing the theater doesn't give you the right to own it.

As for trying before buying, there is a big difference, to me, in trying a free sample of food at the store (or a taste of your friend's order), trying a short term trial of a piece of software or even reading a chapter in a book before you buy it than watching the entire movie before you decide to pay. Isn't a free bite of food, chapter of a book or trial of software the same a movie trailer or a well written review? You are getting a sample of it. Not the entire thing and you make your decision to buy based on that sample.

To conclude Jeff's analogies about the fact that "we can't try before to buy", I just wanted to remind him that lots of stuff on the internet do offer a "try before to buy", we can basically try everything before to buy, including food.

A friend shares a piece of whatever food he paid for with me, I taste it, if it's good I pay for it. Groceries do offer samples, we can drive a car before to buy it (for free), and in the country where I am, when I pay for whatever thing online, if I decide I don't want it anymore, I have 10 days to give it back. Meanwhile I tried it for free. Of course they'll give me my money back.

To conclude, it's our right to try anything before to spend our money with it.

If it's true that one every 10 downloads it's a loss sale, the music companies should just lower their prices. It's their greediness who let this happen. And it does NOT mean that a lost sale equal lost money. If a seller pays 10c for something and sells it for 10$, and a thief rob his tangible good, he really did not lose anything, on the opposite, he still profited with it. If just the MAFIAA won't be so greedy, probably they will not "lose" any sales on bittorrent users. But what matters here is money, and even with P2P they are not losing any. If they are so poor they won't have the many million of dollars they're spending to sue kids, mothers, to bother people that perhaps does not even own a PC (yes, they have IPs but they can do mistakes), they just give bad publicity to themself.

They are the main cause of their problems, yet they come and blame us. There's no way I'm accepting this behiavour. I will still download anything I want, if I like it PERHAPS I will pay for it if the price is reasonable, and I said reasonable, otherwise tough sh*t.

Usually I rarely download, but it's becoming a question of principles. I don't want to make these greedy corporations greedy at the expense of the poor people who does not even have enough for a living.

We can do what you say for intangible goods. We can't try the food before to pay for it (well we actually can, many groceries do make us eat food for FREE then we can decide if we like it and buy it and pay for it).

I went to the cinema, watched "The Simpsons - Movie", paid about 15 punds for it (more than 30 bucks) then I downloaded the movie (crappy quality) for free. Did I do something wrong?

No, we can watch before to buy, and we can download once we have bought a cinema ticket or a movie, considering we can't copy something that's OURS because all their DRM crap.

You real-world scenarios could not have been stated more clearly and anyone who would argue justification is not living in the real world.
Your analogy made me lol.

@181 (Fred Burfel):

Again, for those who just admit they are stealing crap, good for you.

Well, good for those people who actually are just doing it for the free stuff and admit it. I do it for the free stuff only because I don't have the credit card to pay for it. (Yeah, and then you're going to give me some real-world analogy about "would you steal gas for your car if you didn't have a credit card" and tell me to fuck off because I don't get the real world at all. Both sides' arguments are one-dimensional.)

When someone mugs you, breaks into your house or steals your car I’ll be that guy standing by the police car pointing and laughing.

And when something bad happens to you, we'll all be there laughing as well.

Like you said, karma is a bitch.

@191 (Jeff):

Actually, Ford is offering the test drive stuff like you said. (No charge.) And I've actually read an entire book inside a store before, without buying it afterwards or leaving it in a worse condition. So don't call your own bluff.

I don't really care if you guys download stuff- but some of you, be honest, some of you are never gonna pay a cent to this movie. And then two weeks from now when your dumbass friends want to see transformers again, since you're already hanging out, you'll go see it with them. And so that's why some of the rest of us are annoyed, that now you're gleefully ripping off an interesting movie with no hollywood stars; whether it's successful or not doesn't really factor in the equation.

And no, the crew isn't gonna be making royalties off of this thing. Nor are they for Transformers. But when people with the money see that District 9 made, say, 100 million, then they think for his next movie we can invest twice as much. Meaning he can hire twice as many people or employ them twice as long or whatever. People that are making good work.

It's not that you're downloading a movie, especially if you're in a place that doesn't have it yet. It's that you seem to think you're in a war where it's awesome little pirates vs. money-hungry slick cokehounds, and that's just silly.

@#190 Trelew
Here is my question for you and anyone else who says that they use torrents as a "try it before you by it" type of tool.

Do you go to a book store and read the entire book before you decide to buy it? When you go to a restaurant do you order a meal eat the entire thing and then decide if it is worth paying for? When you go grocery shopping do you sample every item before putting it in your cart and paying for it. When you buy a car do you insist that you get to drive it for a couple of months to see if you really like it and want to pay for it?

Probably not, correct? Then what makes you think you should have the right to pre-screen a movie before deciding if you want to go to the theater and pay for it?

Pirating of movies only shows how much that Big Business has fallen behind on things. Their short sightedness fail to recognize that people are willing to wait 4 months to a year for the DVD release. Why pay $25+ to take yourself and a date out to movie when you can wait for a bit and get the DVD? Sometimes the DVD costs the same or less than the movie ticket. I'm of the "try before you buy" crowd of pirates, but according to Powers-That-Be (ie Big Business) were nothing but criminals and deserve to live the rest of our lives in destitution and jail.

Sorry, but if a digital download, be it legal or not, deters people from going to the cinema, it's not a problem of the internet, but of the people.

Either "everyone"'s perception of what going to the movies is has changed or a more general change of accessibility and convenience is occuring or people are simply finding various arguments/reasons why alternative viewing and aquisition methods are preferable.

It's their ATTITUDE and WAY OF USE that is changing. It's not as easy as saying hey they're all just spiteful pirates who'd rather watch a blotchy copy on a 22" than on "the big screen".

Also - you can't go selling people home cinema, from widescreen TVs to DVD players, beamers and whatnot and so forth, AND expect them to still love the "original".

If you advertise the big screen effect in the comfort of anyone's home and THEN go whining about how the normal cinema is dying, well, let's face it, then you're the type of retard who cuts off and eats his arms when he's hungry and then complains he can't scratch himself anymore when his a$$ itches.

Seriously.

If it's the torrent I think it is, I wouldn't call it DVD quality - just a very good R5.
Excellent film BTW ;)

Again, for those who just admit they are stealing crap, good for you.

But anyone else who is trying to justify it, you're an idiot. NOTHING you can say makes it right. And the fact that so many people try to justify it either shows how screwed in the head you are, or that you feel guilty about it.

And for the guy who said he'd steal my granny if she weren't bolted down, good for you. It just makes it that much funnier to me when something bad happens to you. When someone mugs you, breaks into your house or steals your car I'll be that guy standing by the police car pointing and laughing. Because at that point you'll be a hypocritical jackass and I'll be laughing harder and harder the more upset you get as you realize you won't see your stuff again. And trust me, I do it all the time. I'm an asshat that way, but I feel good about it. Karma is a wicked woman and I laugh at her every move.

it will tell a story when the sequal comes out in 18 months or so and it also gets leaked, film companies are leaking this stuff on purpose as free advertising and busting a few people that download it just as an extra bonus profit

And explain to us how a film that paid itself 3 times will not generate more interest to make another film, and will lead to less quality, higher prices(that I believe could happen), lost jobs and all that crazy talk this people throw around. How? what is the logic of it? If it's making more then it cost how it could be a bad thing?

One thing about royalties.

Is the fault of the pirates that whiny babies get paid cents and others ripe the big flow off cash right under their noses?

Let me tell ya, if you are producing something and getting paid close to nothing and other are cashing in big, sure as hell is not pirates that are stealing from you.

Learn to do better contracts.

I don't understand those guy's trying to tell us that they are not making money.

Hmmmm...lets see, all the crew most gain royalties right and I most lost something because I thought that people who worked on films where paid a fixed salary and when the film was done their income from the film was too but apparently carpenters, FX guys, coffee people, dressers and others all gain royalties LoL

Never mind that the film already paid itself 3 times and by Hollywood standards(that are high) it is a complete success because it made double what its costs was and probably it will sell a lot of DVDs and Blurays just for the exposure and the people talking about it in a positive way.

What are you people insane? You already got paid, you are not talking about a busted film but a successful one. Nobody is stealing anything from you, because those who paid for it did it willingly and those who didn't probably would have found other ways to see it.

What it really astonishes me is that people say that there is no reason for people to pay for it once it is in the open, well is that is true explain how people paid $100 million dollars already to see it even when they can get it for free?

Why these dumb people pay if they can get it for free, why for God's sake people pay tickets, go to the theather or buy DVDs or BluRays? Why?

A hint, it is not about morals, people are not going to the theater to watch movies because they feel compelled to help producers, actors and support crews and they don't buy merchendise because they want to help those people either. When you figure it out why maybe those whiny babies from the industry may stop being worried and find more ways to hook people instead of complaining that they don't make enough and what they could have made "if" something was different instead of being grateful for what they got and thank God they didn't loose their homes in this global recession and are not in line soups like a lot of people in a lot of developed countries are right now.

I love all the analogies flying around here. First, a real-world scenario and then I'll try my hand at analogy.

Real: Someone once handed me a CD with a copy of some movie about a ring and some midgets with hairy feet. I liked it so much that I took my family to see it. I even bought and read the books for the first time. Because of that shitty copy, I've taken different members of my family to first-viewing theatrical "dates" so that each could have the big screen experience before returning with the rest of the family for a second viewing. That's how I taught my kids to stfu during the second screening so the noobs to the movie don't have it spoiled. In essence, I've done my part to shut the freaking traps of potential guess-what-happens-nexters in the audience.

You're welcome.

We've each taken one book, read it and passed it along. Then we purchased the DVD set and compared the books to the movies.

It works well for us. We've repeated the procedure as applicable. As the father of the family, I like being able to screen a movie before I decide if and when my hard-earned paycheck should be spent on fuel, snacks and a big-screen experience. I've had the misfortune to base my judgment on overly biased critical reviews and imagination of a possible book-to-screen translation only to be left with snacks that will become sewage, fuel from dinosaurs that I've converted into greenhouse gases and a mutually embarrassing day that has been stripped away from all involved.

Before watching the 2009 "Star Trek", I read critical reviews. I watched a shitty copy on my dinky computer screen. It was the shitty copy that prompted me to load up my family and take them to see the IMAX version at an average price of $25 per person. I left feeling proud to have contributed to something every person in my brood wishes to continue. If I hadn't seen that shitty copy, I would have waited for the DVD release, rented it and wished that I didn't have such a skewed vision of the give-and-take regarding the creative process. That shitty copy encouraged me to reward everyone involved in making it a truly enjoyable experience.

On the other hand, I have no wish to reward anyone for stealing precious time from my life.

I will watch a version of District 9 on my dinky little screen so that I can decide if a full-blown theatre experience is worth the while of my family members. I will sacrifice the time it takes to sit from opening to closing credits. I will determine if it's appropriate for members of my family from pre-teen to geriatric. I will pick and choose members of my family that will enjoy the experience and exclude those who will bitch, whine, text, spoil or otherwise ruin the experience for audience members around them.

Expect purchases. Expect support when warrented. No one wants the entertainment industry to die; least of all the "pirates".

Expect passive punishment for stealing morsels of lives.

Now for the analogy.

I have an electric race track. My friend has a replicator. He replicated the design of a vehicle made by a retarded child. I tried it. I confirm that the "artist" is retarded. He cites the many people that helped the retarded child bring his design into reality. I purchase the retarded child's design out of sympathy.

Now I have a retardedly designed racecare discarded and gathering dust on a shelf. I could have used that money for toilet paper and baby formula.

My friend feels bad for replicating a horrible design. I feel bad for feeling bad about feeling bad.

He replicates his replicater, I replicate a kick-ass design and all my friends go to the track to watch the real thing in action.

When I come home, I race that tiny version of the real thing around the track over and over. Then I replicate one for another friend.

After a while, the design, the driver and the pit crew become famous!

Things only begin to fall apart once I figure out how to replicate the entire racetrack at full scale. I have to do it someplace where noone else has real estate. I choose Earth's Moon and begin with episodes of "The Three Stooges" for introductions to Feature Presentations.

I rule the Solar System for figuring out Humanity's primary problem; Humans are retarded. On purpose.
