I remember back in the ‘dark ages’ (before fast internet connections) my friends used to buy videotapes (wikipedia it!) of unaired tv programes recorded in the USA. When the shows eventually made it to the UK, my friends would buy the video box sets of them, along with the tv tie-in novels, posters and any other merchandise they could lay their eager little fingers on.

They later updated to DVD’s of these shows, and now blueray.

The very notion that ALL pirates don’t support the content providers is nonsense. How else does more new (and better) entertainment get funded?

My friends who buy all the merchandise (and continue to download new shows & purchase them when released) are not in the minority. For those few who download without spending, my friends are more than happy to contribute on their behalf.

BTW, I think my friends all have OCD cos’ they love to hoard… you should see their attics!

I actually took the liberty of reading the study you linked to(futuresource-consulting.com/press/2008-07_HomeCopyingWhitePaper.pdf), something that you obviously didn’t.

If you had, you’d realise it was aimed at people who make physical copies of DVDs at home using recording hardware. Copies of legit DVDs they either borrowed from a friend, rented, or actually purchased.

In the latter two cases, we’re talking about people who’ve already comitted to spending money on DVDs. In all three cases, we’re talking about people who prefer an actual disc over a virtual file.

So is anybody surprised that the majority of them said that if DVD copying wasn’t possible, then they’d buy more DVDs? If they want to own hard copies, then buying them would become their only option.

The whole thing is basically just an advertisement for Macrovision, anyway, hence the essentially rigged question.
