Let me run two real-life scenarios past you here…

1) The week after GWB invades Iraq looking for Al Quaeda Putin marches the red army into Georgia looking for “chechnyan terrorists”. Georgia’s newfound independence instantly dies.

Putin comes out looking like a saint, only doing his part in the war on terror the same way the US did and demanded.

2) Putin starts blocking websites as demanded by the west, protecting western IP and coincidentally obtaining carte blanche on stifling and blocking anything else he personally doesn’t want shown..

…and comes out looking like a staunch member of the international community despite just turning state censorship into a default.

Putin’s not bending – he’s playing the West like a damn fiddle!

Putin may be the most competent statesman in this century – after all, his background is a bit unlike his peers in that his former job was as the deputy chief of foreign intelligence at the KGB. His job was, literally, manipulating western politics.

He knows full well blocking is useless. This is just like every other move he’s made, going along with the US agenda in order to further his own purposes.

I.E. if you can look like the guy in the white hat following US blocking policies, “regular” censorship of government dissidence won’t even get questioned internationally.

Putin just loves being able to stand there and point a finger at a US president saying “Hey, I’m only following your lead here”. The same way he did when he invaded Georgia looking for “chechnyan terrorists” right after GWB invaded Iraq looking for Al Quaeda.
