In 1789 the original limit of copyright was 10 years. Meaning that copyright of Carrie would have ended in 1984… and copyright of 1984 would have ended in 1959.

Instead it extends to 120 years after King Stephen goes to the ol’ Pet Sematary. J.D. Salinger died in 2010, meaning copyright of Catcher in the Rye won’t expire until the year 2130. By that point who knows what we’ll be reading books on. Microchips on your thumbnail? That is if we even bother to read books at all…

At some point these companies have to stop being such hoarders and let their old stuff go. Maybe, like the people on those shows, they really are hoarders and need serious psychiatric help.

This way, if there is a bogus request, an actual person will be held accountable. Google also should be charging an administrative fee for each takedown request it is asked to process.

Google has allowed companies to game the Content-ID system to claim simplistic sounds (an original recording of bird chirps has been claimed by Rumblefish) and public domain material (NASA videos have been claimed by Associated Press). Instead of providing statistics similar to the DMCA on the use/abuse amounts of Content-ID matches, a search for content-id statistics produces: “Content ID has generated hundreds of millions of dollars for partners.” It seems clear that Google has a conflict on interest when it comes to fixing Content-ID.
