RapidShare Cheapens Pricing Scheme After User Revolt

Two weeks ago RapidShare announced a change in the pricing scheme for their premium members. Starting this month, account holders would’ve been required to pay an amount based on their daily usage volume along with a requirement to skip between various packages to avoid overpayment. This planned change resulted in a revolt among RapidShare users which forced the company to revisit its plans.

rapidshareRapidShare has made several drastic changes to its service in the last months. They began in March when it became apparent that the company was trying to get copyright holders on board in an attempt to convert pirates into paying customers.

A month later RapidShare ditched its CEO Bobby Chang on claims he was no longer the right person to successfully lead the company. And in a continued effort to avoid the pirate site stigma, RapidShare killed its reward program and went after sites that infringed their trademark to facilitate illicit downloading.

Two weeks ago premium users of the file-hosting site were informed about another upcoming change that was set to go into effect this month. RapidShare announced that it would stop the existing payment plans to introduce 5 new packages. These new packages would have daily usage limits and users would have to switch between them according to their daily download demands.

The result was that most users would be worse off than with their current plans, or would be forced to switch back and forth between the various packages on a day-to-day basis. Unsurprisingly, many premium users complained to RapidShare, urging the company to reconsider their offer.

“As a result of the recent adjustments to our product and pricing model we have received a lot of feedback from our users,” RapidShare communicated to its users yesterday. “There was also positive response but we want to be honest with you: most answers were negative.”

“With our adjustments we have alienated many users. As a matter of course, that was not our intention. Instead, it is our goal to introduce a system that gives our users more flexibility. However, we are happy about every single user response that we have received as this is the only way we can learn what our users really want,” the company added.

To accommodate the complaints of the revolting users, RapidShare changed its payment scheme to a simpler and much cheaper offer. For less than 5 euros users can now buy 4 months of premium access with 10 GB storage and a 30 GB monthly data limit. Heavy users can buy additional traffic and storage space if required.

The main benefit of the revised scheme, besides the fact that nearly every user will be better off, is the change from a daily limit to a monthly one. Under the old scheme, users with the cheapest account had a 1 GB download limit that they would have to upgrade even though they might never go over the 30 GB a month.

With these changes RapidShare thinks that there wont be any future revolts from users over the new pricing scheme. “We are convinced that we will meet our users’ needs with the new and simple model,” the company said.

Rapidshare isn’t so rapid either. All of the other places listed by #3 are just as good and even with the free account.

    Filebeam seems decent also.

I still don’t understand why so many people use rapidshare when there are better, cheaper/free, viable alternatives.

  • Post-Doc

RapidShare has a ridiculous business model. They have their user base, now they just want to gouge away till there’s no one left. It’s not sustainable.

The best alternative, MegaUpload, is good but it’s only a matter of time till they start doing the same (ala Megavideo and their XXX Megavideo spin off).

    It’s time for a better alternative…

Megaupload is still my all-time favourite. They are extremely lenient with even free users (2GB per hour or something like that which is more than what RapidShare used to offer for its cheapest premium plan).

The main problem is that way too many use RapidShare but I guess if more switched to MegaUpload, then I guess their model would probably end up changing (not for the better).

  • Hom3r

    @Me-oi

Even with premium, I have never reached my max speed of 2MB/s with rapidshare.

Free accounts on Mediafire and Megaupload download at 2MB/s every time.

i’ve lost 9 accounts, over 900,00 premium points, i’ve lost 150gb + on 5 accounts and they still screwing with their customers

not to mention the stored up 25gb acumulated traffic people stored thats vanished now too

first it was 10gb a day , then it was 5gb, then 2.66gb a day, then back to 5gb, then to 1gb a day then back to 5gb… then now this stupid idea of rapids

    then changed again to rapidpro

why can’t they just offer a month/year package with unlimited download like every other file hoster on the planet does?

nope thats just way to simple

  • Justin Yourbox

I’ve been an Rs premium user for a long time because my fave music blogs generally upload their stuff there. I usually max out my speed with Rs, and I love the option to have direct download links. When I saw their email two weeks ago I was so confused by their new pricing scheme that I vowed to not renew my subscription once it ran out. Imagine! having to switch between payment plans on a daily basis. Who the frig has time to bother with that crap? Honestly, sometimes I think businesses don’t pull their heads out of their asses long enough to see thing from their customers’ prospective. RS’s recent changes are proof positive of this.

Hopefully forums realized that too. And last 3-4 months they provide rapidshare links with mediafire and megaupload links at same files. :D

I was searching for a bass guitar vst(virtual instrument) for my music. I clicked on a rs link and said something like the file has been deleted due to copyright claims, and rs redirected me to a site to buy legal games! LOL! Then I downloaded the same thing on hotfile.

  • paul

File hosts that will replace RS soon Hotfile, FileServe, MegaUpload, NetLoad and Storage.to

I already see a dramatic increase of Hotfile and FileServe links

  • Sendaii

@36: Which begs the question: WHY on earth would you want a VST to emulate a bass guitar, or any stringed instrument or that matter? They all sound god-awful, nothing like the real thing.

Anyway, I never used RS in the first place. They always offered an inferior servcie when compared to other file hosts.

  • grrr

NO Rapidshare. Take it back to how it was in May! where $10 gets me unlimited monthly dl’s (capped at 5GB daily, peak times). No more BS, I’m off to HF or MU, so FU RS!

Usenet providers learned years ago that most customers reject daily download limits. Due to an obvious complete lack of research, Rapidshare had to learn this fact the hard way!

  • lumpy

RapidShare started sucking a few years back. First it was the impossible to decipher captchas, I swear to god I’ve had easier time deciphering Myst puzzles. Then they limited the free user download speed. I don’t need 1MB/s for what I’m downloading off RapidShader but at least give me 300kB/s. It’s not that much to ask.

  • Anonymous

2Leech all the way. I use it ’cause you get premium to 15+ file hosts (RS, MU, HF etc.) for the price of one.

  • Anonymous

Bad move – Rapidshare pulled an ebay except in fact rs has competition. When all the uploaders leave there will be no files left. I wonder if rapidshare is under legal pressure.

  • Anonymous

Rapidshare consistently works with my download manager whereas MU doesn’t and seems to be having a hissy fit.

  • DrpKikNorris

If you get skip screen for Firefox you usually don’t have to wait to download other files. Except for Rapidshare. I can download all day long from MF or MU, but I still have to wait all damn year to get all 15 billion RS links (not to mention the 15 min wait between each file) to get the King Turd Beavis and Butthead Collection.

  • blabbities

Anybody who still uses Rapidshare is an idiot. End of Story.

If you dont know by now that there are 10s of other FAIRER and FASTER hosts than you need to re-investigate.

Also, Hotfile has a traffic-share program where if you are someone with a premium account and you want someone to download something at premium speeds you can give them like however many GBs or whatever…pretty cool

  • SMoK

Hey guys. It is MediaFire any day. Megaupload and Hotfile come after it but RapidShare has the maximum number of links compared to any other filehost service :(

  • Brudda

Everybody uses Rapidshare because everybody uses Rapidshare. Understand?

It’s like the Satan of all websties, ebay. Because so many people use these sites, you can find what you want. For example, I’m downloading and obscure old sci-fi movie from RS right now. The alternatives listed in these comments don’t have the kind of stuff I want. I know, I’ve tried them. RS has what I want!

JDownloader is your friend, whatever filehost you decide to use. If you have a dynamic IP, it’s even better, you can create a small script and it will disconnect and re-connect your internet in between downloads so you can download loads of files without having to wait. From my daily experience, the order of speeds (with no premium account) is like this :

    1) Hotfile / Sharingmatrix / Mediafire / Megashares

    2) Megaupload /Netload

    3) Rapidshare

    4) Depositfiles

    5) Fileserve

    6) Oron.com

  • Louis Tim Larsen

The danish community site I’ve been using is switching host to Netload instead of Rapidshare, but I it seems like it’s no so commonly used on other forums like Warez-bb and Katz. Which host is most used on the filehosting forums? Hotfile?

The last offer from Rapidshare seems fair, but I still moving to Hotfile. It seems to be much more cheaper and with a lot of links.

  • Screwed by RS

On June 2, I paid for 6 months of RS. If I used the max, I would receive 910 GB (max of 5 GB per day). Today – without ever going over limits and with zero in storage, the account status page says I have only 48 days or 60 GB left, whichever comes first. So my losses are over 700 GB. RSlinks and others are dumping RS because nobody is using it. One member deleted 300 GB in storage. Link lists are being dumped because many contain illegal content – kiddie porn, etc – and holders fear that RS will sell info to law enforcement.

  • Screwed by RS

I read every post carefully. Some are not aware of RS’s old traffic policy. I went over once in 2009 and they explained it. First of all, they NEVER extra-billed. They would allow 25 GB over 5 days. If you went over, they would email to say they were stopping service for a time corresponding to the overage. For example, if you were over 2.5 GB, service would be withheld for 12 hours, then restored.

It appears like nobody but me is checking their account status. Those animals are giving me 1.5 months service for 6 months payment. That is it. those who signed up for a year and still think RS is great; be aware that you won’t be getting what you think you are.

  • Screwed by RS

Someone mentioned Usenet. I paid about $150 for a year then dropped them. If you like Forums, they would be worth every penny. Problems: they list speeds at max-packet, which discounts lower packet speeds. that is why real time clocking of their downloads reveals times often slower that the other P2P services. And they plant advertising in Search pages, when it turns out they often don’t have the material they claim to be able to give you at “high speed.” And they insist on receiving Credit card info before they deliver their 2 week tryouts. You might try them out if you like lively Forums, but be sure to cancel before the end date or they bill for full value. I don’t really regret trying them out.

I am an idiot. After being a Rapidshare customer for a year, I let my premium account expire after the changes. With their new policy, I went ahead and bought 400 Rapids. Guess what? I can’t friggin’ use them! I get the message “Cookie Set” but when I click on the download link, it says the account is expired. I wrote customer service and they have not even sent a response ticket back. Again, I am not a Rapidshare noobie. Here is a link with a couple of other people with exactly my problem: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100706221914AAm2pu3

Is anyone else experiencing this? At this point, I am sorry I renewed my Rapidshare premium account, especially since support at Rapidshare is not responding!

  • A Pirate

Rapidshare ,another victim of antipiracy laws,I hope it’s dead soon so other site would think before eating from the man’s hand

  • Anonymous

    @70

Why are you supporting their new scheme?

Go else instead. There’s so many other places that are now far better.

I was a rapidshare customer because there’s so much rare and awesome stuff on rapidshare, but I won’t be supporting this. Plus it used to be that you could download 50gb a day, every day. For those of you wondering at this you get a 5gb limit but there was happy hours from 1am to 9am where only 10% of what you download is counted.

Now that’s all gone to shit and my money is going elsewhere.

  • 079undergrrr…

seems like RS started action on its members owning bigger storages, by going on a sneak-tip, thats all i can say/think about recent developments….. storage never been a ,problem’, better; wasnt in terms of use for (premium)accounts, as far as i know it from past 4 yrs or so i used RS..
In contrary to most ppl i read on web never had any complaints where (max) speed is involved but friends told me thats simply “..cuz you are a f*ing premium =P ”
So basicly a satisfied customer but not a small detail to go with that is fact i actually only payed once; for a few days trial-membship, back in the days, and their *10ooo dl’s = another 1 premium-month free* system did the rest for me (us) .. only limit been you couldn’t redeem more collected points then equaled 6 months account in advance..
BUT.. all that’s gone now, and suddenly storage over 10GB’s means xx points (or rapids) per GB extra, WTF??!! next to fact i traded another 6 months period just before RS started the changes, whats basicly disappeared in smoke.. just like all history about it that u used to be able to check in logs/stats… a coincidence,or??!! ***
No sir, like i said already, i cannot feel any other then that RS deliberately cuts on those account-holders owning lil bigger storage, not only quitting their points/reward system ( what i can understand where their legal issues is concerned, this way they idd manage to prevent certain problems for the future caused by those real big fish taking advantage of the situation ) but also changing the account terms in disadvantage of lots of “fair” users that been several yrs satisfied RS customers.. like i’ve been basicly, certainly not a big fish with storage, just by myself sharing mainly live recordings (audio/video) also none-releasing level, so… :s
    * Oohw!! btw there’s also one more improvement ppl; max filesize up to 500MB’s ….. pffff :s

GRRR .. just my 2 cents

  • DoneDadda

I’m done with them. I consider myself smart but you need a friggin PhD to figure out what the hell they’re scheming about.

I’m going MU, nowadays they’re not that far behind RS.

  • Hackademic

Rapidshare has lost a lot of its customers.
There is hardly new content anymore.
Frankly, no one will upload large amount of files if you wont get rewarded.
Goodbye RS, it was good while it lasted.
Hotfile is the way to go.
    Unlimited daily downloads!
    Beat that RS!

I get 3megs a sec from megaupload without using a pay (or even a free) account. Also, IDK bout this 2gig limit per hour that a few other people mentioned, but I have downloaded over 10gigs an hour from megaupload and never hit the supposedly existing limit.

Mediafire is great for small downloads. I cap out between 1-1.5megs a sec with them. What I do like about Mediafire is that I can have 10+ downloads going at once from them (again not with a payed or free account either).
