The record label asked the search engine to take down the Twitter pages of several of its own top artists, including Afrojack, as well as its own account. Google, thus far, has refused to help out with this blatant attempt at self-censorship.” […]

False copyright claims are quite common - probably in the millions of incidents over the last couple of years. I myself had the experience of being flagged for copyright violation when I had used a *public domain* musical score in one of my videos.

Think of it this way : the more false claims that can be made, whether they are enforced or not, who wins that scenario: the common people, the content creators - or the cartels?

On the contrary, it's purpose is to protect profit, steal from the public domain, and fortify the power of copyright maximalists. That this results in "unintended" censorship, "accidental" false claims (which are never punished), or, to put it bluntly and accurately, oppression, is of little concern to the ruling class.

If you disseminate copyrighted material by accident twice on youtube, your account is suspended or deleted. If you make 200 false claims, nothing happens - if you are a cartel committee like the RIAA.

As are the stories about one of my bank account providers accidentally preventing all their customers from spending money.

The relevance to this story? From the updated article: "We did some database updates that day and 5 sites we normally have on our ‘white list’ got marked on our black list and URLs were reported in error." It is bad practice to make untested changes to a live system, as it is bad practice not to manually verify that changes do not cause undesired behavior.

But since neither Lloyds Banking Group PLC and Royal Bank of Scotland PLC learned from each other (or themselves) it is inevitable an idiot will push an update through that yet again fucks things up.

Best way for things to change in the banking system? The CEO of a bank chartering a private jet and being asked "do you have another form of payment? Your bank has declined the transaction." Best way for things to change in the copyright industry? A label's top artist Googling themselves and the top 20 links being to pirate sites and naked pictures of themselves because Google actioned the takedown notices of the "official" sites.
