They have to pay server fees etc.. I doubt they are really making “big bucks”.

Would love to go back to BBS, IRC, and FTP though. Where to be Elite and get the 0-day warez you had to earn your keep.

If I make a picture of a painting and print that picture onto a canvas and hang it at home, did I ‘steal’ something? The original painting is still there though…I did not ‘take away’ or ‘take possession of’ the original painting, thus I did not ‘steal’ it.

So, yeah, um, frothing lunatic versus guy who thinks what he believed as a kid doesn’t relate to what he believes today. Not that I don’t find him a hypocrite, but he’s got more of a point than you do. I’m not even sure if you have a point. You’re just shouting mean words and hoping for crowd support.

If I buy a CD, rip it to my McMP3 device, leave it on the lawn with a sign that says “take me”, and you pick it up an keep it forever, who is breaking the law, and who is going to jail? Same as leaving songs “lying on the net” (instead of the lawn).
If you sell it on the net, it is like leaving it on the lawn.

Ash Avildsen deserves to be crucified, or, even better, ass impaled! He believes that it was ok for him, a special and superior human being, to make “mistakes” in his youth, but it’s terribly wrong for today’s teenagers to make the same “mistakes” and go through a learning experience. You know, for all his arguments are a touch on the melodramatic side, you’re all a bit too eager to crucify him for not loving piracy. Really, it’s not like his fundamental point here is wrong – “I was a kid. Kids do stupid shit, and as I got older I changed my mind.” How unreasonable is that? From where I’m sitting, the commenters on this article come across as the ones lacking a leg to stand on.

That having been said, it’s a shame he lost his way in the first place. Really, his argument makes more sense flipped on its head – “As a fellow warez guy,” shouldn’t he understand the realities of the issues BETTER than most?

Oh well. At least he’s polite. Could’ve skipped the “exploiting my childhood” bit, though.
