Right, but only if you do not respond to their knocking (assuming they even knock). So, the moral of the story is that when you're smoking weed in your house and the cops knock on your door (which is the situation in this case) you have to tell them to go away and get a warrant. Do not remain silent and hope they'll go away. The cops are also not allowed to threaten forced entry (e.g. you respond by saying get a warrant and they say, "if you don't let us in we will assume you are destroying evidence and we will enter forcibly).

Pretty messed up Supreme Court decision. Bye-Bye 4th Amendment rights.

Senator Padilla’s Anti-Piracy Legislation to Help Boost California Economy Approved by Senate Public Safety Committee
Tuesday, May 03, 2011
SB 550 would protect California’s global leadership in the entertainment industry

Sacramento – Senate Bill 550 by Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) was approved today by the Senate Public Safety Committee on a vote of 4-2. SB 550 would help authorities reduce music and movie piracy by verifying that large-scale disc replicating plants are complying with California anti-piracy laws. The bill has already been approved by the Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee will next be heard in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“The crime of illegal mass reproduction of music and movies is a serious problem. Last year alone, more than 820,000 illegal discs were seized by law enforcement authorities in California,” said Senator Padilla. “Fraudulent CDs and DVDs undermine our economy and California’s role as a global leader in music and film. They steal revenue from artists, retailers, and our entertainment sector,” he added.

The illegal discs flood the market and compete unfairly with genuine products. The wave of illegal CDs and DVDs has undercut the functions and the bottom line of legitimate businesses. It is responsible for diminished tax revenue and a significant number of job losses in the state. The Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation estimates that the economic losses in Los Angeles County exceed $3 billion annually and deprives state and local governments of nearly half a billion tax dollars a year.

Music and movie pirates are increasingly turning to large-scale disc replicators to produce high quality, unauthorized discs. These discs are then sold to unsuspecting merchants duped into believing they are purchasing authentic products.

SB 550 would enable authorities to identify the CD and DVD plants responsible for pressing fraudulent discs. The bill would make it possible for law enforcement to inspect CD and DVD plant machinery to confirm that plants are placing source identification information on the discs they press as required by existing law, and would allow the state to impose steep fines when violations are discovered.

I'll go to jail refusing to give up the access code before any pig can snort through my encrypt-able property.

I'll also go to jail for assaulting anyone who attempts to steal my property from me, unless of course they showed me a warrant for it, because otherwise it would be stealing.

There's so much fucked up about all this (basically 21st century American politics in whole). I guess it might be unsafe for me to speculate on mediums I no longer associate with, but I feel like this will get a brief, very high-level, uninformative coverage in the main media. I hate how this country is riddled with laws that the people who enacted don't even know about more or less the common man.

Hmmm. I wonder what would happen if we all started ignoring all laws, but the constitution... (I'm not sure how well financial systems would hold up)

When will they learn, Its not really effecting the economy. The people who pirate generally do it because they can't afford it, stopping them from doing it is just going to make people go without. It is the same as back in the day or still today in third world country's where some one steals bread to live, they only do it because they can't pay, give them some money and/or drop the price and you'll see them start to pay for it.
