They can b!tch and moan as much as they like, but consider this:

---

In 1908 the major film companies (Edison, Biograph, Vitagraph, Essanay, Selig, Lubin, Kalem, American Star, American Pathe©), the leading distributor (George Kleine) and the biggest supplier of raw film, Eastman Kodak, formed the Motion Picture Patents Company (MPCC).

At that time Thomas Edison owned nearly all the patents for motion picture technology and for the manufacture of raw film. The MPCC vigorously defended these patents and was instrumental in enforcing them through the use of lawsuits. They also set standards, or production rules, such as a one-reel duration and no credits for the cast or crew.

In this way the MPCC controlled the format, supply and distribution of motion pictures as well as the equipment necessary to make them.

A young independent film maker named William decided that he didn't want to pay their royalties or abide by their rules and so headed away from New Jersey (the home of Edison and the MPCC) to make it more difficult to enforce them.

Several others followed and a thriving town populated by motion picture industry workers soon grew up.

The surname of the young and rebellious William? That would be Fox.

And the name of that town? Hollywood, of course.

---

I don't know about you, but I find it ironic that they are now demonising so-called 'thieves' and 'pirates' when their entire industry and organisations are founded on *exactly the same thing* as they are now complaining about.

But they did it to increase their profits, which is much worse than simply sharing.

"The RIAA started this war ten years ago when they went after napster"

You're forgetting about the MPAA and Sony/Betamax?

You're forgetting all the whining they did when cassette tapes (and eventually DAT) were around?

This goes back much further than ten years.
