RIAA Website Wiped Clean by “Hackers”
Written by Ernesto on January 20, 2008Apparently the RIAA is so busy suing consumers that they forgot to hire a decent programmer. With a simple SQL injection, all their propaganda has been successfully wiped from the site.
It started out on the social news website Reddit, where a link to a really slow SQL query was posted. While the Reddit users were trying to kill the RIAA server, someone allegedly decided to up the ante and wipe the site’s entire database.
The comments on Reddit are only speculation so far. Based on the username, which was apparently “webReadOnly”, it might not have been setup correctly, or someone could have found another way to delete the content form the site.
Another possibility is that the website has some sort of database flood protection that disables new connections, or perhaps the RIAA themselves removed the content temporarily. The latter seems unlikely, as a better solution would be to take it entirely offline to fix the bigger problem. While they could fix a small vulnerability like this in a matter of seconds, the chances are it’s not an isolated problem.
As pointed out by Haywire, playing around with the urls a bit can return some funny results. It is pretty easy to make the RIAA link to The Pirate Bay for example.
For now it sure does look like all the content has been wiped from the RIAA homepage. Let’s hope they have backups, or not.
Update: After a few hours the RIAA restored the site. They seem to have fixed the vulnerability, but we have saved some screenshots.
Update: They didn’t fix it all, this still works.

I can still access the info on the site when I go through the “TPB link at RIAA” posted in this article, and then press one of riaas tabs, I can see it all, then when I press some tab a second time i get to the “temp removed”.
I think this seems strange.

They still haven’t got it back and working yet? You would think they would get someone on this right away. Maybe they haven’t noticed yet?

W00t W00t taken DOWN!
it’s not wiped. The db is simply flooded from all the long reddit queries to the point that it can’t make any new connections. If you load the page about fifty times you’ll get lucky and see the data now and then.

The Punks vs Mercs battle is really heating up lately, and the reds are winning :P

any way. Good Luck :)
do google how to prevent XSS attacks :)
Everyone go to thief.infernohost.net and download my proxy webbrowser, you can keep switching proxies to get them LOL!
Oh, come on, guys… these poor RIAA saps don’t know they’re stupid, and I’m sure with their history of litigating everything that moves, they can’t attract a decent programmer to begin with. And they obviously don’t trust Google, or they’d know how to secure a database.
RIAA should group up with Scientology and make the “Church of Stupid”..
Awww….. too bad for them
w00t! Top of front page of Digg!
FUCK RIAA and MPAA !!!
This is great news and next websites should be mediasentry.com and media-defender.com etc

Yeah we need to get more pirates active in defening our rights.
Bring down any anti-p2p website.
Mediasentry.com should be next :)
And even after several hours they have not done anything yet to sort it out - but the again, THEY do it for money and today, after all, IS Sunday. How can somebody be so ignorant not to keep a constant eye on the net (and exp. on your own site!) in such a “business”? That proves, once more, that they are not only mean and money-mad but also very stupid…
your ALL just a bunch of thieving little bastards!
Why is stealing music ok?
then its ok to go grab your paycheck from your mailbox right?
who is teaching the future generations here?
sorry to say, i make a living doing music and im embarrassed at the way people treat artists…… you all should think about it….. and you would if it happens to you.
Lol @ #56. I keep the list on the web of the shit I wanna get. Check it out, whoever.

Maybe we are…but at least we can spell! Actually, we’re not, but then I promised my mom that I woulldn’t feed the trolls :)
“sorry to say, i make a living doing music and im embarrassed at the way people treat artists…… you all should think about it….. and you would if it happens to you.”
You are wrong. Most people here respect artists very much. But we hate to be ripped of by the industry. We want to give money to you guys making the music and not paying the bills of a big bloated industry thats not even necessary anymore.
There are many ways of supporting an artist: Buying a CD, getting merchandise, visiting your concerts. I am extremly sure many people who download your music will do one of these things if they liked it!
thats fuckin awesome

Man… If you are in the music industry you realize that you make next to nothing off of cd sales. Quit your bit*hin and hit the road on tour. Death To RIAA…
Before every one gets excited; while the RIAA are a bunch of retards I’m sure that their website employees are smart enough to have back-ups.

Wow, I’m in music too - I’m playing the world’s smallest violin for you right now ;p
I saw their website in the better state at about 20:00, but unfortunatelt, by 20:50, they have restored at least the front few pages back to their originals.
It could not have happened to a more deserving organisation :-))
Hey buddy, I’m a musician and a painter and think there is nothing better than the network of people that has sprung from nothing to share all this information. I play in a reggae/ska band and thanks to the likes of things like bittorrent we played a tour in Japan a few months ago. Why? because a bunch of music LOVERS from Japan started downloading our tracks, and we gained a following. I applaud anyone who uses these systems as it is taking the money away from the labels and other suits, and giving the power to the artists. Musicians are making more than ever on tour now, and the tide is changing to where people stop buying their music at Best Buy where the money gets funneled to the suits, to where musicians are uploading directly to Itunes and other media to get paid directly. I’d rather get the attention that I earned instead of some money whoring label.
Props to you nr. 71 !
You are the one who understand it.
Concerning almost everyone who just posted in these comments,
Shut up.
Seriously..just shut up. You are all annoying with your improper spelling and immature behaviour..pff. Of course then again I just type like this to imtimidate pre-pubescent teenagers who think myspace and facebook are coolzorb.
Seriously though..shut up.
excelente!
Go ahead and keep stealing music, you inconsiderate idiots. That way, the artists don’t get paid, they don’t get what they deserve, and they can’t support their families. How selfish can you people be? Let me come over to your house and steal your stuff. How would you like that?

Oh, c’mon, stop being so brain washed. Artists don’t get paid because they let record labels to sell their music. Only junk music is promoted these days.
The RIAA website seems to be restored…

hahahahahaha
i love this
whenever artists or producers pull this shit it almost makes me die laughing.
honestly, it’s exactly like that south park episode.
“since you downloaded music illegally, britney spears can’t buy her fourteenth twin double awesome hyperjet and has to instead settle for a regular awesome hyperjet.
“since you downloaded music illegally, metallica can’t afford that third country they had been wanting to buy.
“since you downloaded music illegally, the rolling stones can’t afford to buy an entirely gold plated replica, square inch by square inch, of new york city, and instead are going to have to settle for a gold-plated replica of chicago.”
give me a fucking break.
no one suffers from this.
the people who need the money are getting promoted endlessly by filesharing, which totally helps them and gives them more money, and the people who are “hurt” by it (the multimillionaires with twelve clothing lines and perfumes named after them) don’t need the money anyway. they could still waste ten thousand dollars every day for the rest of their lives and not even notice.
so shut up.
no one cares.
cry us a fucking river.
@Retard above me (#75)
You just don’t get the idea of filesharing do you? The more we share, the more people will download. And the more people download, the more known artists become. The way the music industry is know, all the cash goes to douchebags in suits and not to the people who actually have the talent. With filesharing, these artists are able to get their music out to the world without paying the salaries of said suited douchebags, and once they are known, then they can begin to make money.
A recording is just a promotional tool. Music lives on stage, not trapped between the layers of a CD.
I think I missed all the fun… the site is back up again D:
musicians shouldn’t expect a cd to support their families. they should be out playing their music across the world every day without a family to worry about in the first place.
Go ahead and keep stealing music, you inconsiderate idiots. That way, the artists don’t get paid, they don’t get what they deserve, and they can’t support their families. Thanks for that laugh. I haven’t read a company plant’s post on a blog in a few days. Do you get overtime for weekends?
The RIAA isn’t on the side of the angels. Not everyone online is downloading music illegally nor is everyone who listens to music automatically suspect. The RIAA seems to think that “consumer” or “PC owner” means enemy and has labeled everyone who isn’t in the industry as suspect.
So yeah, even though I don’t download, I’m happy to see them get taken down a peg or two because what they’ve been up to in the last few years hasn’t been just going after people who download. It’s been downright anti-consumer. They’re going after customers. Get that? People who are paying for the content the industry claims they aren’t getting paid for. The customers of the very organizations they are supposed to be protecting. They’re going after anyone they think might, maybe, possibly rip a CD to their computer. Or maybe, might possibly even be thinking about it. Sometime, in the future at some possible date… probably.
Frankly, they’re insane with greed and the consumers are stuck with the consequences. So your little rant is ineffective and just makes you look like a RIAA drone. Now run off back to you cubicle and tell your boss that the blogs aren’t responding favorably to your posts. If we’re lucky, you’ll trip over the water cooler and hurt yourself and that’ll be that last we hear from you.
thats fuckin epic
they’re back up again
Fuck RIAA? Yes.
Fuck copyright? No.
Go hackers ftw? Ehh…
This was one person figuring out a hack, and a bunch of people jumping on a bandwagon like blind lemmings. It was a cheap shot, and while it brings a smile, don’t pretend it was some sort of grand coup; RIAA will just play this up to demonstrate that people who oppose them aren’t just “stealing music”, but resorting to illegal hacking and DoS. Um, yes, that makes us all much more innocent.
Many musicians support sharing, but aside from the ones who are standing on the street accepting donations into their guitar case, I don’t know of many who would say “I want to give my music away for free, for the rest of my life.” If you do music as a hobby on the weekend, sure, but a “day job” does need to pay for itself. Sharing != fuck paying an artist.
I realize most people don’t want to think about this in more than terms of “wah, I can’t just indiscriminately download music, in violation of current copyright law, without worrying about the RIAA looking over my shoulder”, but if you’re ever hoping your balls will drop and that you’ll be perceived as a man and not just a boy, you need to start thinking about how the rest of the population - that doesn’t do p2p - is going to think about it.
A real fucking artist doesnt complain and moan about people downloading his music/movie or whatever.
A real artist knows how to survive and adept the changes.
So still. FUCK MPAA/RIAA and all the companies who are useless and sueing people over Large sums of money or putting them in jail and potray them as
CRIMINALS <—- unacceptable
@TheOneX
I think I should be allowed to smoke pot in public. Everyone else needs to learn to adapt, and get out of my face.
Portraying me as a criminal is unacceptable; I don’t care that the law has been this way for decades, I don’t like it, so I’m going to bitch and whine and moan and break the law, and then bitch and whine and moan some more when I get arrested or sued.
Grow up. You want to change this? Prove to the majority of people - not just the ones that already agree with you - that you’re right. And just because it works for rap artists to say “fuck” over and over again to make a hit song, doesn’t mean it’ll work for you.
Loads of bands put there music videos up on YouTube, MySpace, etc officially; you don’t pay to listen to it on there! Having a copy on your computer just prevents a build up of the ever-increasing internet congestion all over the world.
Don’t get me wrong, artists should get the money they deserve. It’s the “big guys” in the industry that get a load of money, for what I ask.
People still buy CD’s, Merchandise, etc, I’m sure the artist can survive on what they make; It’s still going to be more than most of us!
Something’s definitely happening: there’s a 404 on news_room.php, perhaps an attempt to stop all the XSSing!
I must admit, reading this on digg made my laugh a little!
cheers,
at least today riaa.com gets some clicks
GIVE THEM NOTHING…BUT TAKE FROM THEM EVERRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYTHINH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

This is the very definition of being owned.
Just Great ! :D
The riaa deserves it
the record companies give them millions and they sue people for millions and keep all the money for them self
if there so in for keeping the artist from loosing money then why are they so in for charging millions for their crap service and they don’t even give any of their profits to the artist

I am thinking about the artists. I pay for my music. When possible I buy directly from the artist’s web site and avoid the large labels. I am 100% for making sure my favorite artists get their paychecks. It’s one of the reasons I can’t stand the RIAA. They’ve turned me against buying from major labels which means some artists are no longer getting paid because they are signed with those labels.
This has been said time and time again. The RIAA is not the artist. They are not even the individual label. They are a group that supposedly represents the label’s interests and they are doing a very poor job of it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a company so effectively drive an industry’s image into the ground since Sony BMG’s root kit disaster, which, ironically, had to do with DRM.
The RIAA stopped working for the artist and became a tool for beating the consumer right about the time the Patriot Act came into force, so don’t cry ‘protect the artist’ here. This isn’t about the artist. This is about the RIAA trying to protect a dead format and business model by cluttering the legal system and lobbying congress. They are completely out of touch. They’d have you believe that the theft of IP is more important than any other crime facing society. Yes. Right. Absolutely. There’s no hint of insanity there. None at all. Let’s waste all our resources on hunting down people downloading songs because it’s a risk to the nation!!! Yes, it might be costing the companies money, but I don’t see other stores and retailers using congress to lobby for resources to help enforce shoplifting laws. Hmmm.
They’ve yet to realize that they can’t resurrect the cd by suing college students and the disabled.
I might not agree with the some of the more radical opinions on here but I certainly do not agree with anything the RIAA has done since they went on the warpath against anyone who dared to listen to music without allowing a root kit on their pc in the past 5 years.
Dammit, i missed a good laugh :(

RIAA needs to back the fuck off. Piracy may be hurting the recording industry, but I’d laugh at the face of the RIAA if they were to realize that this piracy is what has sold so many iPods, Zunes, high definition televisions, even broadband internet service.
Just goes to show, you push a group of people… they’re bound to start pushing back…

I think that’s what the wanger’s on about. You are entirely correct, likely.
And they try to shame us into being ‘moral’…. Fuck…
‘meow’ lmaoooo
RIAA has to realize that the days of artists making millions are over!
The RIAA and artists better get used to making less money just like everybody else does.
Let me summarize:
Not only are the RIAA effectively criminals, think “organized crime”, and such, but also so are the people who are downloading music that is not supposed to be freely redistributable.
BOTH. Criminals.
There seems to be a huge sentiment here that all the RIAA promotes is junk, therefore it is alright to steal from them. Or that because you don’t like their business techniques it becomes alright to steal from them.
Why would you steal junk?
If you don’t like Wal-mart, you don’t go and steal from them .. you just don’t go and buy stuff from them.
No matter what you feel, if you are redistributing things that are not freely re-distributable, you are doing it in violation of the laws of the country (at least within the US), so good luck with whatever comes out of that.
Karma
Quite funny, Ive as of lately been learning about SQL injections, im surprised the RIAA site was vulnerable . This tips me off to other anti-p2p groups ill look into ;)

:O You mean Dec. 21st, 2012? Zomg, epic birthday! If you are really RIAA, what are you going to do? Make the world go into a great depression by suing everyone?
I wonder who did the hacking though. xD
hackz0r do you best mate, bring those fucking anti-p2p corporations down.
Go get em Hackz0r!
Fuck the RIAA, Fuck em where it hurts!
Companies like the RIAA think we steal, you wouldn’t steal from someone’s wallet, right? But For Fucks Sake! We COPY MUSIC!!! Not steal. Copying = Sharing.
Stealing = Taking
See the difference, RIAA?
We Copy and Share Music. How is Sharing Illegal?
Taking Money from someones wallet is stealing.
This is SPARTAAAAA!
Ok, they fixed the XSS now.
Why is stealing music ok? I’ll tell you why, look at all these artists we got putting out CRAPPY cd’s with 1 or 2 good songs on them, just so they can make a buck for there record company. Mainstream music is pathetic and it makes me sick. I will show as many of my friends as I can how to download music and movies.
RIAA owned. Who’s next?
You are all thieves. Before all this piracy I made approx. $30 million per year. Now I’m lucky to make $15 million per year.
How the FudK and i supposed to live on that and support my family.

Actually work.
so pwned. die riaa
to all those who consider filesharers thieves:
1) theft can only be successfully prosecuted if it is proven that there is “intent to permanently deprive” someone of something. o noezz!! he b stealin my erm….oh, right
2)bits = information. information is without boundaries.
3) many filesharers (myself included) support artists by going to gigs. you buy a c.d. for £15, much of which goes to the MAFIAA. I buy tickets at £40 each, most of which goes to the artist. I’m lucky enough to live near the best arena in europe, I go to LOTS of live events. I’m the thief?

If you don’t like Wal-mart, you don’t go and steal from them .. you just don’t go and buy stuff from them.
If you look at the most popular torrents on public trackers, both music and movies, it’s always utter trash.
I suspect a lot of downloading is done simply as a hording action and that they wouldn’t otherwise listen or purchase that movie/album if it wasn’t readily available. Let’s not forget that a lot of popular music/movies are good ratio boosters on private sites, though the most popular albums on OiNK were rarely Top10 music.
Of course there’s the other side of the coin that lots of people have a rubbish taste in music and movies. Those people are rarely vocal on torrent news sites though.
I bought every Metallica album, attended several concerts and bought a few tour shirts until they banned me from Napster.
Since that day, I haven’t gone to a single Metallica concert, haven’t bought a single Metallica CD and threw out all my Metallica shirts. I’ve downloaded all their albums they released since that day (which have all been shit, nice work guys) and didn’t pay to watch their movie.
Treat a loyal fan like shit after I had spent hundereds of dollars on them, what do you expect? What an ass backwards methodology.

There is no such thing as stealing
what they calling stealing from us is what they called profits
what we call sharing they call stealing
its a very bias term used to label others they dislike
its like calling african american “black”
which is hypocritical
we must educate the mass as well because they are being misguided by these nazi corporate using very misleading terms to suit their agenda of controlling our behaviors

AHAHAHAHAHA!!! I LOVE THESE GUYS!!! RIAA FUCK YOUUUUUU!!!
what the fuck is riaa
i really enjoy watching a corporate entity, whose sole means of support is money they rip from artists, call me a thief for downloading music that i have already purchased. almost all of the music i have helped seed have been downloaded because CDs are so easily destroyed. i buy a CD and a month later its scratched or has some mysterious skipping, am i supposed to go spend another $20 because a corporation made a bad product? or is there some kind of solution free people have come up with to protect us from bad overpriced merchandise.
then this same corporate entity tells me im stealing from the creators. these lawyers can only create arbitrary laws, not art, which gives them no right to comment on how art is distributed. if one cannot do, one makes laws to prevent others from doing as well. please folks go read some books, maybe some philosophy, something that will introduce you to the idea that an unjust government is something to be destroyed (see our own constitution for this specific point).
allow me to quote from the New Hampshire Bill of Rights (1784):
Article 10. Right of Revolution: Government being instituted for the common benefit, protection, and security of the whole community and not for the interests or emoluments of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, whenever the ends of government are perverted, and public liberty manifestly endangered, and all other means of redress ineffectual, the people may, and of right ought to, reform the old, or establish a new government. The doctrine of non-resistance against arbitrary power and oppression is absurd, slavish and destructive of the good and happiness of mankind.
my paraphrased version of that is: when a government built to protect becomes a tool of corporate, military backed, state sponsored oppression and mind control, then it is the purpose of free people to destroy the entrenched status quo. rebuilding is easy once the ignorant and power hungry are gone. (if you are one who is sitting there and saying the people will turn riotous or revert to your concept of anarchy, then you are in fact part of the problem and will not be around for the solution, so don’t try to start thinking now, just relax your pretty little head, the adults are in control now) to all of my pirate brethren, all my respect and wishes for success tenfold, somehow someway someday we will find the way and earn back our freedom.
FOr all those that defended the RIAA, I should point out they are stealing the royalties of indy labels that arent member of the RIAA. Now they claim they will deliver these royalties, but you have to become a member of RIAA to do so. Otherwise the money goes in their pockets.
http://gundampilotspaz.com/2007/04/29/riaa-to-collect-money-for-independant-non-riaa-artists/
To me, downloading a song for free is a lot less severe than collecting money for something you dont own, especially if you will go see their show or support in other ways.

sorry to say, i make a living doing music and im embarrassed at the way people treat artists…… you all should think about it….. and you would if it happens to you.
Wow, I’m in music too - I’m playing the world’s smallest violin for you right now ;p
I have to agree here, I’ve been in music for years. I don’t think priacy is good, but when you look at how the RIAA are treating the musicians and customers, I can think it’s justified in many cases. Look at the big name musicians that are even critical of them and think about it. I for one hate paying $16-20USD for a cd that the musician only gets pennies from. now, pirating from a small indy type label is something I can’t see, but they tend to treat everyone much better.
Hey, Retard Industry Association of America, you got your little punk asses pwned big time.

Hey RIAA, lameness is no excuse
BURN RIAA! BURN !!
What should have been done was after cleaning the site up ..Hackers should have uploaded a movie and should have started a seed from there own server installing some rootkit torrent and then asked them to sue themselves ..or better make MPAA sue RIAA and make them suck their own CUNT….
hack them all!
i like the last screenshot there, specifically the error message, lol

HACK THE PLANET! :D
LoL
That was nice to Riaa (or about 90% of the internet lik’d it)
THE RIAA IS A BUENCH OF OUTDATASSED OLD ASSHOLES. I RECOMMEND THAT NO ONE PAY FOR ANY MUSIC OF ANYKIND. - THEY RIP OFF THE ARTISTS AND MAKE THEIR MONEY BY BEING A PARASITE LIVING OFF THE TALENT OF OTHERS. I CALL ON ANYONE WITH BOTS TO CONTINUE
D-DOSING THEM AND KEEPING THEIR SITE OFF LINE. HEY CIVIL DISOBEDIANCE BABY FIGHT THE BASTARDS
Sry about the caps wasen’t looking when typing.

LMAO… Tust me anything that you try to do (if your programers can even come up with anything) it will be overcome within days. It is amazing to me that most of ur cases are actually fake and that people dont do what you said they did. (You said my frined downloaded a movie that was 184 KB in size.. LMAO do i need to teach someone about file sizes) I would say come to my house and ill make a fool out of you. Anyway someone should put together a big class action suit agains these fake bastards and show them that unlike them who hide behinde there desks and accuse people all day that we can fight back.

Right . Major anti p2p victory . This is probably the final blow , they oughta be comatose by now .
Get a grip ppl , it`s only a minor inconvenience to them anyway . While you`re laughing your butts off they`re merrily screwing some poor slob`s life just enough to get themselves a better database programmer
We are teaching future generations that communication is essential to human beings and that it cannot be stopped, only delayed.
We are also teaching them that sharing of information leads to greater works of art and music.
Labels bend over artists during negotiations thats #1, Artists do not make that much off the sale of a CD #2, Lets assume that they did I really do not feel sorry for the likes of Pdidy, Madonna, etc etc when they buy a plane ticket to a cake, and island to their 10 year old or 15 hummers with spinners thats #3. We are already getting treated like pirates and thieves so we might as well pirate stuff #4, YOU ARE DOING WHAT WE ARE DOING, IE: RIAA TYPE ORGANIZATION STEALING CODE FROM LINUX #5.
Also, if an artist is dead then how can they lose money? It is not like Kurt is going to buy presents for Courtney from the other side…. So suits get paid for what they did not create nor inspired but hey we gotta pay them so they can dig up kurt and put the greenbacks in his pockets.
Yeah get bent RIAA…. You are not one bit concerned about the artists. You are just pissed off you are losing money but cant really say anything else other than “OH you pirates are hurting the artists”
You know whats great tough? Even if you found a way to stop piracy, there would be so
