Scammers Try to Cash In On OiNK Misery

Written by enigmax on October 26, 2007

There are always people who are happy to try to cash in on the misery of others. The OiNK shutdown is no different. Sites are appearing thick and fast asking for donations and promising relaunches. None of these are sanctioned by OiNK - don’t give them any money!

Mere hours went by after the OiNK takedown before sites started springing up claiming to be collecting money for OiNK’s legal defense or soliciting donations in connection with a revival of the site.

Some are displaying the amount of donations they have received and these seem sizable in some cases. Although there is no doubt that some generous supporters have already given to these funds, its likely the amounts of donations shown have been inflated to imply that this is the correct fund to donate to.

Fact: NONE of these sites are sanctioned or set up in collaboration with OiNK, so please, please, please - don’t give them your money! This has been confirmed by TorrentFreak directly with OiNK himself.

This means ALL sites claiming to try to raise funds for OiNK should be considered dubious. It’s entirely possible that some good natured individuals are trying to genuinely raise money but it’s impossible to separate the scammers from the tiny minority of honest people.

There may not even be a fund in the end, this hasn’t been decided yet so in the meantime, please keep your money safe.

Potential donors are advised to wait until we make an announcement about the correct fund to donate to. We will do that here on TorrentFreak.

Stay tuned.

Didn’t we learn last time when lokitorrents shut down what happens with donated funds?

*laughs*

Anyone stupid enough to fall for this deserves it!

#36 is fake, there’s no official fund-raising site at the moment. Don’t fall for it! This is coming from the real ex-admin. And neither wartech nor mag have approved anything.
Off topic I know, but could you recommend a good router for DL’ing torrents? I have a netgear router and the thing crashes within 15 minutes of firing up my torrent client. It is a cheap router and I believe it is overheating. (I have tried o/fixes like adjusting connections etc.)

any help would be great. Thanks dude.
Hi Alberich,

try to limit the max half-open connections (~100?). Cheap routers seem to be overwhelmed by the data.

This was also discussed here:

How come there are constant posts concerning cx.la saying scam, not scam?
They are obviously a bunch of cunts out to make money from genuine people who wish to see the return of OiNK. They are thieves as they “intentionally deprive ” people of money. Unlike the good sharers of OiNK who were just music fans sharing their music with friends and depriving the artists, record company’s of nothing.
It is interesting that the Police go for OiNK but not for these wankers…they may actually be the same people. They can make a buck or two, but will die a slow and painful death having never experienced what life has to offer in the way of all greed motivated morons everywhere.
I await he return of a genuine alternative to OiNK run by the same decent people motivated by a concern for the good things in life. In the meantime many OiNKers have found a decent home at
http://www.supertorrents.org/
which I believe is still open to those who care to share.

TF has a point they are all scams… but hell all the effort these people went through just to try and fool people into donating money. If people did donate then hey sucks to be them but im sure if they look into it hard enough their is a way to get that money back if they really wanted to. But… like i said… these people do deserve credit for trying.

A for Effort!
HAHA people got owned. LOL

Alberich

‘Fraid router problems with torrents are hard to explain, it can often be base on the firmware and the chipsets inside. I find that most routers need a reset monthly, and usually the free or cheap routers of ISP’s are a pile of utter trash.

Best plan, buy one. Test it. If it crashes return it and get another..

And to the guy who told you to shut up. What an utter idiot!

Greed.
ugly little thing isnt it, everyone has giving in to it at one time or another, presidents, congressmen, CEO’s, scum bag scammers, and even the average joe.
thats where P2P comes in, people care, so they share, they are not consumed by greed.
this evil will always be around, the only decent option to combat this enemy we all face is to keep sharing, and not give in to those who try to run us ashore.

@Alberich
if you cant find a decent router, try an old computer running linux, it can be set up to do the same thing and would be much better security.
The SC*AM-Site is http://www.oink.com/donate/donate.html

D*DOS them somebody!

The Official new OiNK is at http://oink.cx.la and will open on November 1. Approved by TooMuchTime himself!
whois says oink.com was registered in 97, the guy who owns it isn’t trying to scam anyone it’s totally unrelated. DDosing a site for having the same name as another is just plain stupid. I mean do you seriously think some guy registered oink.com in the last week just to scam people, if so you are a fucking retard.

This is why people need to be getting after these a-holes. They are trying to confuse people into thinking a legitimate site is a scam site.

LETS SAY IT AGAIN KIDS!

http://oink.cx.la = SCAM

The site the scammer (”Benett”) above references above has nothing to do with OPP and never did. It was around years before OPP existed. Calling for a DDOS- speaks volumes.

These idiots behind .cx .la probably never even heard of TooMuchTime before reading these forums. When they are not busy posting here as ‘tmt’ LOL.

well, all i have to say is, thank god OiNK is dead. there are just some depths you should not have to sink to in order to find content on the internet.

there was a time when i liked OiNK, but that was a long while ago. the sty really needed cleaning.

operating a modern private site is largely implausible given the means and motivations of the **AA’s.

therefore, decentralised, encapsulated admin of a public node would be the best approach to getting another scene like OiNK off the ground again, but the achievement factor i.e. ratio would have to go.
