No, topsites use FTP, and SFV files, and while racing they effectively act like Bittorrent (albeit with piece sizes of 15000000 or 50000000 bytes.

And the reality is there isn’t much difference there (anyone comparing a pre-stream with tpb or btdigg can tell you that)

Of course, it’s all about the profit. Create an artificial scarcity, control the distribution, and don’t forget those lovely arbitrary rules.
It’s like those activity-logging trackers (there’s nothing ‘private’ about them) really took a leaf out of the Hollywood playbook.
