Shareaza Stands Up To Scammers: “We’re fighting back!”

Written by enigmax on May 10, 2008

After falling victim to a domain and brand hijacking, Shareaza is fighting back at the scammers, assisted by the Software Freedom Law Centre, the EFF and Richard Stallman. In further great news for BitTorrent fans, Shareaza will introduce improved BitTorrent support into version 3 of the application.

A lot of things have happened since the Shareaza domain was hijacked. Through TorrentFreak, the Shareaza development team gives an exclusive update on the current situation:

Dear friends and supporters,

The Shareaza Development Team would like to extend our thanks to all of you for your contributions towards our Legal Defense Fund. As you will remember, our project’s identity was appropriated late last year by the recording industry funded Discordia Ltd. shell company and handed over to the recording industry “approved” iMesh for commercial exploitation.

To that end, we are today announcing that we have legal representation and will be contesting the trademark application on our name and identity taken out by Discordia Ltd. After that, we’ll be looking to get our old domain back from the people who threatened, bullied and intimidated the team member holding it on the project’s behalf and who are now using as the gateway to their deceptive business model.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Software Freedom Law Centre, the EFF and Richard Stallman for their help and assistance in this unfortunate matter and also for their recognition of this new threat being faced by free software projects the world over.

If you’d like to help us in our fight to regain control of our identity, we welcome all donations to our Legal Defense Fund. You can use our ChipIn account here to donate safely.

So will this all be long, drawn out and very boring? Quite possibly. Are we going to sit back, lick our wounds and wait for the lawyers to sort it all out?

Heck no!

In fact, The Shareaza Development team is also announcing today that we’ve started work on Shareaza 3.0. Put simply, we’re not going to let the identity thieves slow us down at all.

Shareaza 3.0 will be a significant milestone in Shareaza’s long history. For a start we’re switching to the brand new QT 4.4 application development framework. This will allow us a lot more flexibility for a redesign of Shareaza’s network core, making the current Gnutella, Gnutella2 and ED2K networks more modular. We’re also getting rid of the deprecated MFC code to make 3.0 more plug-in friendly and many of the existing features our users know and love will also be re-built with portability in mind.

The even bigger news is that we’re scrapping our current implementation of BitTorrent and will be using the libtorrent libraries as our base for torrent support in the 3.0 release. Shareaza’s BitTorrent implementation is long overdue for a revamp and while many of it’s features were revolutionary at the time (Shareaza was the first client to experiment with decentralized torrents for example) the development team realizes that its time to bring BT support into line with the modern torrent scene.

Developers with some spare time and a desire to get their hands dirty playing with the new QT 4.4 on an existing code base are welcome to stop by our developers IRC channel for a chat.

Once again, we send our thanks all the Shareaza users and supporters out there and invite Discordia, iMesh and the recording industry monopoly to drop the trademark application and return our domain name before you embarrass yourselves any further. We’re fighting back!

Inquiries can be made via our forums here

Kind regards,

Shareaza Community

Cool. Good luck to them.

Good news^^…
Haven’t heard anything in a while so was a bit worried. Mostly because of the precedent it could set if GNU GPL would actually be allowed to be violated (shrudders)

Very good news indeed. I assume they are using the Rasterbar libtorrent, not Rakshasas libtorrent? Anyway, both will bring Shareaza en par with most BT-Clients out there. BTW. Transmission released a new version lately, finally with IPFilter support.

Watch out guys, the katanas ARE OUT.

6 May 10, 2008 at 17:28 by Anonymous

It is terrible what has happened to them. They work very hard on something, building up a reputation, then have others pretend to be them and attempt to destroy the reputation.

I don’t use Shareaza, though I have before, but the file sharing community and I completely support you and your fight against these terrible people.

Dont use their app, and prob never will but we have to stand up for the principle or the scumbags win, hence donation sent from ezee.se

Good luck guys!

A bittorent site calling someone identity theives? Haa Haa Haaa!

You have no identity or content of your own! almost everything on bittorent sites is illegal stolen media. What goes around comes around! Tons of people are losing their jobs because of greedy bittorent sites! All bittorent sites will fall! Good for them and they will lose because karma is no joke!

It’s good to hear Shareaza is starting to fight back. Hopefully Discordia’s deplorable business plans will be put to rest.

Also, a troll in the first eight comments who isn’t even properly educated on the matter? I think that’s a new record.

Derrr..?! Bittorrent sites? What in the hell are you talking about

11 May 10, 2008 at 18:27 by Anonymous

to “torrent idiots”,

Shareaze is just a client, which allows you to share files with friends and other people. They have worked hard on that client, give it away for free, and there is no reason, why some morons could make money from other peoples work. I do programming myself too, so I know how hard it can be to create such big programs. So please shut up and write something creative next time, or write similar things to this one when you have got any information or experience on the whole thing.

“You have no identity or content of your own!”

Her they come the RIAA/MPAA sending their drone our way!

Hi drone! Just tell you masters to start running because we are comming for them with the pest killer.

We must eradicate the parasites they are because they are detrimental to our societies, our economies, our institutions and our cultures.

Start running too!

I was not using Shareaza now I do!

Good job RIAA! You are not fooling anyone with discordia! We know it is you and I will respond accordingly.

You are in trouble dudes!

The assumption here is that job destruction is lower than job creation.

I’m not 100% sure on that. I’m not sure there is any research on it either.

But since WHEN was the RIAA/Record Labels really concerned about its value proposition to all its stakholders?! Only recently…thats the truth.

There is a tide of change, a new business model will emerge…

so fucking true. riaa… etc. they dont care about artist or anything. its a rotten system who abuses laws and artist just to get more and more money. but money has become a goal for itself. i beg the leaders of big4, look down to the world. dont sit in your chair thinking how to break new money record. dont let the lawyers who are real pests on this world to make your decisions. you dont need more money. world is evolving. help spread the art. use your power that you use for destroying the “world of sharing” to make this world a better place. it is a way that this world is going to. dont make it such a bitter fight. use your power for good.

Bittorent sites not only hurt record industries and hollywood. They hurt everyday people like myself who create video and music products for a living without help from corporations. i do not sell my work out to record or video industries an i finance and push my own videos myself.

Bittorent has allowed my creative works to be stolen and the bittorent site owners are very disrespectful when it comes to trying to remove my works from their websites. Most bittorent site owners do not even have contact information on their website. These greedy bittorent site bring in at least $5,000-$10,000 per advertiser.

Theives will be theives but they will not get away with it. what theives do unto people it will come right back on them.

Shareaza will lose everything as they have helped to destroy many honest businesses.
The pirate bay and all those other devil sites that encourage others to steal and make excuses will perish and be forgotten.

If you are reading this and have gotten this far, heed this warning.

Bittorent sites are evil and encourage you to trade your soul to the devil. You have been warned.

If you find many things going wrong in your life it is because stealing is bringing you bad luck.

it is not just corporations affected by bittorrent.

Families are ravished because those middlemen losing their jobs could be honest hardworking people.

The devil will always try to convince you he has gods knowledge. do not be fooled. this is not just about corporations as it affects everyone.

when someone close to you or yourself unexpedtedly loses their job you will take it seriously.
When you lose all that you have then you will not thimk it is so ok for these evil torrent theives.

Its like saying Hitlers soldiers lost their jobs because Hitler lost the war..

I dont think anyone cares if the soldiers dont get paid.. Theres a million other income alternatives that are more moraly right to work with.
Helping corperations take over others peoples rights, fooling them into giving away everything they have should be criminal.

21 May 10, 2008 at 22:25 by destiny

You cannot compare hitlers soldiers to copyright owners who work hard to create their works.

without creators amd copyright owners there would not be anything to download.

bittorent site owners arew like hitlers soldiers because they steal
and take way what is not theirs.

This is inspiration for all creators out there. We know that the devil is trying to steal our identities and our creations. Do whatever you can by any means necessary to keep your blessings. Never mind the ramblings of these selfish demons who want everthing for free because they are
“leeches!”

If you are proud of what you create
defend it at all costs, even death.

Never get discouraged. Pray for these evil torrent devils to be sent back to hell. Pray for the end of the pirate bay, and all torrent sites. We who believe in God must pray together and banish these demons.

Ungrateful people will always be ungrateful because they do not appreciate anything.

They complain that they are poor and cannot afford to buy ,but the truth is they are cursed because they have selfish spirits.

They will always be cursed so as long as they steal from others and try to justify it as sharing.

Bittorent is a deception to steal and it is going to lure a lot of souls to the devil if you do not heed this warning.

22 May 10, 2008 at 22:35 by Markos

My my… quite a few shills from the record companies today, that too preaching :-0
You bastards should be the last ones to take gods name because you are heading down to meet the dude (ad drawn in comics) with a barbed tail, horns and lots of fire to roast your ass over.
Get an honest job, dont think of releasing one item and getting paid for it for the next 90 years.
Downloading is NEVER going to stop unless the net goes down… even if your prayers (to the devil) that torrent sites all disappear… there will simply be a host of other services to fill the void left by the torrent sites.

Your ass is grass, and WE (the people) are the lawnmowers.

I call a prayer to all creators that the devil will be banished from interfering with our businesses.

I am not a corporation.

I am a hard working creator financing my own talent.

Do your part creators. Open blogs fighting theft and piracy of your hard earned talent. Start webgroups to take down torrent sites that steal your creation.

Pray to God every night that he will manifest on earth and wipe out Satans devil torrents.

We must work together to destroy
this evil theft of our creation.

work together creators!!!
Do not fight alone!

The masses do not control your creation. You do! You do not have to give anything away for free like it is worthless. Creation is precious.

Pray and manifest God to wipe out all evil torrent sites my dear creators.

Pray with your heart and mind and connect yourself to the other creators affected by this evil bittorent abomination.

This is not about corporations.

Abolish these unworthy torrent sites
and conjure your blessings back to yourself.

24 May 10, 2008 at 23:04 by hX_

Oooooh “satan’s devil torrents”. You nutcase.

Religion has nothing to do with the copying of files and creative works.

Every single one of your comments you have made here has made you look like a blinkered, preaching fool who is moaning because someone didn’t pay to see his work. Go die.

25 May 10, 2008 at 23:07 by OMGWTFBBQ

So basically you are saying “torrents are bad, m’kay”…

Seriously destinyfloodidiot, what have you been smoking?

On topic: I really hope they win this, Discordia shouldn’t get away with this. Power to the people!
