From the DECE news item from the link above...

"The consortium plans to design a logo that will be placed on products and websites to let consumers know that those products and services are compatible with DECE standards."

Wow, a really big move here by the big boys to design a logo!

"We will be developing a ... specification that services and device makers can license. They can use the logo to associate their device, knowing that when the consumer goes to buy the content, they know it will play," Singer said."

What we want is non DRM stuff. This already plays on everything, so why bother big boys.

And the logo should be DIVX as I have lots of DIVX enabled products like my DIVX DVD player and also my PC/laptops

yea exactly, if piracy was banned by isp's too, then alot of use wouldnt need such high speeds and im sure alot of people would downgrade there package, i only have 10mb line but its only for films if my isp filtered and made it awkward to get them id go back to the 4mb line

and about sonys new drm thing,i would never pay for a digital download as id much rather a copy on cd\dvd if it wa costng money, something i can physicly hold, swap or sell ig get bored with it, i only get the digital downloads now as there FREE!

i still buy my vinyls tho xD

Don´t really agree with ISPs gaining something from cooperation - yes, downstream would be spared and can so be oversold more, but why would anyone even want that much bandwidth if there´s nothing to do with it. Why on Earth would you need 10+ Mbit? Do you really download that often legal material that you need so much speed? Some dozen Linux ISOs, a handful of black and white movies whose copyright has expired, some HD videos meant to promote the medium... then what? YouTube & friends? 2-3Mbit is more than enough for those, all that extra that you´re paying for just sits there idly...
In other words: piracy drives the Net, wether ISPs accknowlede it or not all that access that they can sell is, atleast partially, made possible by pirates who want to get more and more stuff faster and faster.

I recon the reason why the Music industry is loosing money (so they say) is because people DON'T WANT TO BUY CRAP MUSIC!!! and now they don't have too either...

I like to mix drum and bass. I have around 500 tracks and i still want alot more. If i payed for the records it have cost me 3000 Pounds.. Plus i wouldn't know about all the less popular artist.

So if they manage destroy piracy, they destroy my hobby of mixing drum and bass to a certain extent at the same time..

Its sad

An annual loss of 200 billion is probably a deliberate overstatement used to fuel animosity towards "piracy" (I hate that word), but I hope it is true. Filesharing is the best way to boycott ginormous industries while still obtaining the product.

it is amazing that ISPs are not helping, they have everything to gain from lowering downloads. the less the average user downloads, the more they can oversubscribe their bandwidth, that = profit. but with the prices going down for upstream, i guess it is about quality of service and the fears of losing customers if they start to filter.

saying that, the RIAA should learn a little something. the days of elvis are DEAD, they need to update their long dead business model of screwing the ethnics out of owning their own music and white fat cats owning all of the music. they have offered nothing new for what they have been peddling since before i was born... they should give more. make dvd instead of cd and put tour clips, things of this nature... maybe then i will patronize... but buy a cd with two songs and the rest filler?? please... and i say that since their movies blow nuts.

have a great day

They loose two billion dollars a year due to piracy.. I assume this is based on the idea that if people can't/won't pirate then they're going to go out and buy it?

If they were going to buy it, why are they pirating it?

The logic is out there.

Yes you got it - The Walkman.

Possibly the worlds first reason for mass music pirate copying. Then along came digital with its perfect copy every time - OOps what a stupid time to get into the content game.

You got rich on the instruments of piracy so stop bleating and live with it.

Slightly off topic but relevant I think ...

ISP's are doing something about it. Well, ours is at least. They have just imposed their "Fair Usage Policy" on us. We have no idea what the value is that they set for this but it must be coming down. They are now throttling our connection down to 25kbs. Been using them for years without problems.

Currently using eclipse internet in the UK. Anyone know of a better ISP in the UK with good track record? Were moving with MAC code in hand :-)

Just the sheer arrogance - the entire world rotates around four big media companies - there are MILLIONS of people who couldn't care less about what they produce - the entire world doesn't need to be reconfigured to police their piracy problems.

Sigh, the justifications people use to excuse themselves (for some reason that I don't get ;) ) ... bad music, all media is crap since ... (amazingly!) p2p started to be accessible and you could get it for zilch. ROFL at you guys! :D

Me - I just prefer to get stuff (... that I don't think is crap sometimes) for free rather than pay for it. I'll keep doing it while I can.

I wonder if the fact that many of us don't pay for anything we download beyond ISP costs means that (for some anyhow) the feeling of quality is reduced - many people will refuse to acknowledge something is bad if they have paid money for it (I mean: who likes feeling like an idiot after all). So perhaps on the flip side some people attribute less value to something that they obtained for nothing.

It's not just the DRM but also those annoying copyright notices. Some of them are just outrageously long winded, as if I need reminding everytime I want to watch my favourite movie or show.

I buy a lot Chinese movies as I find it difficult to get decent rips with synchronised subtitles from most torrent sites, if I can find a chinese movie at all. I constantly have to sit through those annoying copyright notices, not just once but twice! Once in English and then again in Chinese!

LOL!

Suck it up, Sony. Every day, in every way, we get stronger and stronger. Any businessman of even moderate intelligence would realize that if DRM, rootkits, lawsuits, and harassment are doing nothing but killing you quicker then maybe it's time to reconsider your business model. But, no. This pinhead believes that a "kinder, gentler" form of DRM will save the Industry's ass. To repeat what I said at the beginning.....

Sony tend to consistently make monumentally stupid decisions. Being pricks with their licensing is what lost them in the Beta vs VHS debacle. Let them be stupid again and fail even more so.

i'm not at all surprised that a pirate spends his lunch hour watching stolen movies instead of actually being social.

Wait, so hes saying ISPs should help fight the piracy but Sony ARE NOT going to get rid of the DRM that contributes to people wanting to pirate in the first place?

Go fuck yourself buddy. I'm sure the ISPs are thinking that too.

"According to McMahon, the entertainment industry is losing more than two billion dollars a year because of piracy,"

Again with the totally ridiculous losses, it's just idiotic to count every downloaded movie or song as a lost buy. And even if every downloader would buy the movies and music he/she downloads 2 billion is still ridiculous.

Who cares if they lose some money. It's not like they need that excessive of an amount. Piracy has been going on forever, and I've never seen that effect their ability to make good movies, or set box office records.

"Sony recognizes, but at the same time ignores these signals from their customers, as they are not planning to get rid of DRM. Instead, they are investing in a new and improved DRM, the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem (DECE)."
How much of an idiot can one possibly be?

"According to McMahon, the entertainment industry is losing more than two billion dollars a year because of piracy, but he believes this number can be reduced significantly with the help of ISPs."

Such nonsense.

Anyways, it is definitely true that as Sony is an arrogant company out there for money, that they will curb private property rights to control what people do with their private property.

Perhaps there can be public demonstrations, where be publicly burn Sony material?

"the entertainment industry is losing more than two billion dollars a year because of piracy"

Don't exist (even the moment) a real proof or serious scientific study that support this statement.

That if is true is that a lot of people don't buy many of these products anymore because these are (in many cases) of bad quality and overpriced... even worse, with restrictions of fair use!! (as for example, DRM).

Particularly, I don't buy any album since 1995... the main reason? the music is very bad, and the quality of the recordings is horrid as the hell; because these since 1995 are each time louder and louder, even the point that the album CDs get audio distortion, as consequence of the saturation on the recordings.

But before of that any anti-piracy idiot come here suggesting (without evidence, as always) that I don't buy albums because of internet, let me to say that I am an internet user since 2002, and I said that I don't buy any music album since 1995, by the reasons that I already explained.

This seems that some ignorant FUCKING IDIOT in the record music industry thought that this was "cool" to raise the volume of the recordings even the point of getting distortion and saturation, and after, others morons in the media industry thought that this was "cool" too, and decided to do the same with ALL the albums since around 1995.

And after, all these morons, that have not idea about BASIC AUDIO QUALITY STANDARDS, don't understand because already nobody want to buy their shit... that irony...

Particularly, I don’t buy any album since 1995… the main reason? the music is very bad, and the quality of the recordings is horrid as the hell; because these since 1995 are each time louder and louder, even the point that the album CDs get audio distortion, as consequence of the saturation on the recordings.

But before of that any anti-piracy idiot come here suggesting (without evidence, as always) that I don’t buy albums because of internet, let me to say that I am an internet user since 2002, and I said that I don’t buy any music album since 1995, by the reasons that I already explained.

This seems that some ignorant FUCKING IDIOT in the record music industry thought that this was “cool” to raise the volume of the recordings even the point of getting distortion and saturation, and after, others morons in the media industry thought that this was “cool” too, and decided to do the same with ALL the albums since around 1995.

And after, all these morons, that have not idea about BASIC AUDIO QUALITY STANDARDS, don’t understand because already nobody want to buy their shit… that irony…

legal stuff will never be able to compete with illegal stuff in terms of comfort. Its just sooo convenient to download off the web. No getting up to drive to a store, no waiting for mail, no restrictions a la DRM, everything always available and of course for free so it doesnt even matter, how wealthy you happen to be. Companies could never offer service like this because they are just too d4mn greedy

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070615-copyright-coalition-piracy-more-serious-than-burglary-fraud-bank-robbery.html

either that, or someone was lying to begin with... I wonder who and if it was the same person ;)

"asked ISPs to join their battle against piracy."

Great idea, try to win the battle when you lost the ** war ** morons, the sad thing is you don't seem to even know it.

But if thye still want to fight, lets not disappoint them boys, fire up your p2p client and keep hitting them where it hurts the most, their fat bottomlines.

Cheers!

"Now there will probebly be the day when it will be too inconvienent to download the stuff. When that day comes I’ll just go to the store to buy these things b/c I have:

A. The money, and
B. No time to wait for downloads."

As the average persons income struggles to keep up with the price of inflation and the speed of the internet increases, that day will be have to be forced.
