Speed up Bitcomet and uTorrent

Written by Ernesto on December 20, 2005

In a previous post we advised to raise the maximum amount of half-open tcp connections to speed up your torrents. On itself this is a great trick, however I recently discovered that 90% off all people use the default settings on their client, and that’s a problem.

Both Bitcomet and uTorrent (and probably other clients) limit half-open tcp connections by default. This means even if you hack the max half-open tcp connections in windows xp, your speed will still be limited. So this is what you need to do:

First of all, read this post that gives you some tips and tricks how to speed up your torrents

1. Hack the max half-open TCP connections

Update: this tweak is NOT recommended if you use uTorrent >1.7, it may lead to unstable behavior.

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more is NOT always better).

2. Configure your torrent client to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections

uTorrent: Options > Preferences > Advanced options > net.max_halfopen

tcputorrent

Bitcomet: Options > Preferences > Connection > max half-open TCP

tcpbitcomet

Now you’re ready to go…

A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then. You can check this by going to (in windows xp) Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).

event

If there are a lot of daily occurrences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spyware…

If you’re done, you might want to try the torrent settings optimizer to check if all setting are correct

Isn’t this already an option in Bitcomet? Preferences, TCP/IP Limit? Kind of like reiventing fire.

sweet, i usually get 40-40kps. But its going now around 120-140kps now after the patch change. However I did need to reboot and wait around 15-20 minutes of downloading in bitcomet for the settings to kick in. For the people who didnt work, wait a little and give it a chance, it will start speeding up slowly and then hit over 100kps/

With the new BitComet version (0.79) you can configure your half open connections in the preferences menu, so no need for the patch..

Yes there is. It doesn’t help just to do it in your client,
it’s WINDOWS that limits the HALF_OPEN connections via the protected
systemfile tcpip.sys. You need to “hack” that file and change the limmit
from 10 to whatever you want . That is also why you need to reboot
and windows asks for the CD . It detects that a protected systemfile has been
changed and wants to “protect” it again be re-installing the un-changed file.
just say “no” to that .
That is also why some AV’s flag it as a “virus” or “threat” .. it is NOT .. it just changes a
protected system file and any program that does that is pr. definition a “threat”
But this is an old patch, hordes of people have used it and it does NO HARM whatsoever to your system, unlike the max 10 HALF_OPEN connections limit.
Of course this wont change anything if you are already maxing out your bandwidth .

well…. after running the patch i couldnt see much diffrence, although it was staying above 70kbs somewhat more than before.. so i then read on this forum that coldfax had put his upload task to 1, and his upload slot to 1, with [no limit] so as to save bandwidth. so i decided to alter mine to those upload figures, and hey presto im flying at a comfortable 120-147kbs. before this i was always under 100, averaging 80 but now im never under 100…wicked..’.’.; hopefully this fucker will stay put as it is, cos the previous figures were not as spectacular. i know its probably not as blazing as some of your figures, but its a god send for me…… see ya////’

I am new to torrents. WinXP SP2. 512/256kbps dsl.

After install utorrent, i got 1-2kB/s download for 8 hours.
After i read forums tips, and perform the tips below, i got 32kB/s average for the same files for the last 3 hours.

1. Port forward on my router.
2. Patch TCP/IP halfopen connections from 10 to 80.
3. Change utorrent max-net-halfopen to 80.
4. Enable Protocol Encyption in utorrent.
5. Set my upload limit to 20kB/s (60% of upload spd).

Thanks to the helpful helpers.

That’s not what i mean’t…
The BitComet client changes the half open connections limit in the tcpip.sys file, first it copies the original and replaces it with a new one, then it temporarely disables the win system file protection and changes the max half-open connections… Reboot is also necessary.
