Speed up Bitcomet and uTorrent

Written by Ernesto on December 20, 2005

In a previous post we advised to raise the maximum amount of half-open tcp connections to speed up your torrents. On itself this is a great trick, however I recently discovered that 90% off all people use the default settings on their client, and that’s a problem.

Both Bitcomet and uTorrent (and probably other clients) limit half-open tcp connections by default. This means even if you hack the max half-open tcp connections in windows xp, your speed will still be limited. So this is what you need to do:

First of all, read this post that gives you some tips and tricks how to speed up your torrents

1. Hack the max half-open TCP connections

Update: this tweak is NOT recommended if you use uTorrent >1.7, it may lead to unstable behavior.

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more is NOT always better).

2. Configure your torrent client to allow 50-100 max half-open TCP connections

uTorrent: Options > Preferences > Advanced options > net.max_halfopen

tcputorrent

Bitcomet: Options > Preferences > Connection > max half-open TCP

tcpbitcomet

Now you’re ready to go…

A third point of interest is that some “windows updates” revert your tweaked tcp connections back to 10. So it’s wise to check this every now and then. You can check this by going to (in windows xp) Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > System… Look for event 4226 (sort by event).

event

If there are a lot of daily occurrences it’s likely that the max amount of half-open tcp connections was set back to 10. Or you’re infected with some nasty spyware…

If you’re done, you might want to try the torrent settings optimizer to check if all setting are correct

there are some right idiots here, i tried this, after wondering why my torrents had been cruising at an amazing 2kb/sec for weeks, and as soon as i rebooted, low and behold sexy speeds of 180kb/sec. amazing. thank you.

I’ve done it and rebooted and there’s bugger all difference. Seems to work wonders for some people yet does nothing for others.

Hey people i have done wat the forum says but it will only work for fast connections like CABLE, ADSL2 and faster. It will not work for ADSL 1.5 and slower because you speeds are limited while faster connections have a more bandwidth listen up to make it faster go to http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php and download the patches from the site once that is done use all the patches that apply to your system winxp, win2000 etc then download a tool called advanced system optimizer and tweak everything in the tool then use the tcp/ip patch from
http://www.lvllord.de/ use it and patch the connection to the max possible (Edit torrentfreak DONT DO THIS, it will slow your torrents down, see the instructions in the post) but do it after installing all windows updates because somes updates restores the connection back to the orginal file. Make sure you have a decent firewall and antivirus because once the changes are made torrent files will go off. have the protection

96 Mar 25, 2006 at 12:06 by frankdee

would like to try

97 Mar 25, 2006 at 14:46 by Ernesto

Anime King, the max possible is NOT good, especially on slower connections.

And I already mention the lvlord patch in the post.

once u’ve launched the pach, it’ll do its job and reboot the computer. Xp will then ask u to insert xp cd (file changed, xp will not work properly, bla bla bla), click CANCEl and patch will continue its work…

By the way for those with SP1, u don’t need the patch, only for SP2 version of xp

99 Mar 26, 2006 at 04:07 by bluejay

By the way, to come back to Jimmy’s post (1/16/2006), i have the same problem, no admin rights. Looked around in forums, it’s because of xp PRO. As it’s configured for local networks (companies and so on…), Admin rights problem is very complicated…

Anyone knows how to solve this. I’ve managed to pop up the “SECURITY) tab in properties for every folder except for the patch. Can’t even extract it from “.rar” to my desktop. Says cannot move file, access denied…

send me a message on my email (bluejay_fr@hotmail.com) if u can help in any way
