Speed up your torrents

Written by Ernesto on November 30, 2005

Help! BitTorrent is slow… This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get about BitTorrent. Unfortunately there’s not some kind of magic trick that makes your torrents go through the roof. But you could take some simple steps to optimize your speeds.

1. Cap your upload (most important)

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.

2. Hack the max TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more on this).

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port.

By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall

It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

If you don't like torrents try MP3 Fiesta. They hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal

how about BitLord?? how do u change the downloading speed?

    86 May 05, 2006 at 15:33 by dataking

Zerb, you must have mistaken bytes and bits, 4mb is 4 mega-bit and kb/s is kilo-byte per second, is can also be (bit), what why you usually write kbit and kbyte, then you can easily tell the diffrent. You can use google to calculate the precise speed. write in google:
    4 megabit to kilobyte

I tried the tcpip hack to allow more then 10 peers as stated in the article. My torrent of MS Vist Beta went from 16k to 80k. To all the naysayers out there, don’t try this. To everyone who wants a faster download, go for it.

My speed has never been good since i got satelite internet, but the download speed is faster then my old dial up. I am using utorrent to do all of my downloads now and my speed was always around 10/s. I changed my port just a little while ago and my download speed is between 30-50 kb’s sometimes more.
Port# I switched to is 25440. Hope it works for u other people.

If you are having problems with downloading speeds or quality switch to utorrent. Sometime you have to play around to get a fast download speed, but once you figure it out its the best way to go. Utorrent never has viruses and the quality is like non other. Try axxo and make sure you download divx or xvid files.

can anybody let me know how to transfer incomplete torrents from one system to another? I use uTorrent 1.6 and want to change the machine it runs on to another one on the network. I moved the *.tut files, told uTorrent the location of the files but it doesnt’ seem to load them when I start it. Am I missing something? are there *.torrent files saved somewhere else? I thought the *.tut files *include* the *.torrent info (?)

what i did was just copied the whole program across, coz as ive noticed these torrent programs dont need any registry crap to make it work!

another thing is (this is for the bitcommet users) how would you transfer your downloads for one version to a newer one? coz ive tried everything and the stupid thing doesn’t want to transfer from Version 6 to Version 7?
