Speed up your torrents

Written by Ernesto on November 30, 2005

Help! BitTorrent is slow… This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get about BitTorrent. Unfortunately there’s not some kind of magic trick that makes your torrents go through the roof. But you could take some simple steps to optimize your speeds.

1. Cap your upload (most important)

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.

2. Hack the max TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more on this).

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port.

By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall

It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

If you don't like torrents try MP3 Fiesta. They hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal

if u want faster torrents why dont you u download bitlord and then tweak your firewall settings

    103 Jul 29, 2006 at 16:40 by KillerCloud

I am trying to use Bitlord, every time I downloads a driver from any webpage download at a speed 300kps to 500kps but when I user Bitlord it only go no a maximum of 13kps to 10kps. now I see a program call UseNeTX. Is the same program as Bitlord or is difrent, is it faster??? Can you guys help.

    104 Jul 29, 2006 at 18:31 by Ernesto

    Do NOT use UseNeXT
    NEVER pay for filesharing applications

Remember that you are not getting the file from a webserver, but from other users. The speed of your download depends on the number of people that share the file, and their upload speed

I’m looking to set-up a P2P start-up, bootstrapped by hocking my wife’s jewellery and re-mortgaging the house - anyone got bold ideas and want to join me? I’m thinking of developing a download to speed up torrents - or something totally different that no one has thought of yet - come jack in the 9-5 and lets build something mean and ugly!

    Best,

    Abel
Oh, i’m on a wireless net work does this affect the speeds? None of the other computers were in use when the above speeds were recorded! I’ve been downloading SWAT 4 for 17h33min and counting……HELP ME PLEASE!!!!
Hi, there do you have 2mb broadband? If you do i have great settings for bitcomet, i’ve reached speeds of up to 220 kb/s download that is, but if the seeds are good then usually get 180kb/s. My settings are 250 kb/s download and 10kb/s upload and you have to type a number in the listening port. These settings can be changed when you click on preferrences.

Can I just say that if you have Windows XP sp2, the only thing that is affecting your download speeds is the torrents themselves. Meximizing the number of TCP connectections and that rubbish will get your nowhere (it just breaks your computer like it broke mine). FIND TORRENTS THAT HAVE MORE SEEDS THAN PEERS and you will reach speeds of 200kb/s in non-peak hours. I used to be around 9kb/s than I just found how to find good torrents and now it’s fast!! FIND TORRENTS THAT HAVE MORE SEEDS THAN PEERS. it’s as simple as that! FIND TORRENTS THAT HAVE MORE SEEDS THAN PEERS!

kane are you using any sort of firewall if you are make sure the port your using is allowed make sure the port is the same in utorrent 0 is what you want in stats halfopen.also if you have used luvlords patch set it to 100 and in utorrent advanced change net half open to 80 you need both for the patch to work well

    115 Sep 19, 2006 at 14:25 by davis
yea i get this problem when i try to use that patch thing to change half-open connections. it says it needs to change the name of the TCPIP.sys file during the patching, and i say it’s ok, but then it says it cant change the name of it and i have to change it manually, what do i do?
when you use the patch you will see a message from windows fist one press cancel when it tells you to insert cd second one press yes I want to keep this new file and your done. the patch does the rest, check on it every month or so because windows updates changes it back to 10 every now and then good luck

Goddamnit, torrents piss me off. I almost never go over 20kb/s, regardless of the amount of seeders and peers. 24mbit connection, and all I get is 20kb?! When I check the peers subpage in bitcomet, it shows that 90% of peers are getting speeds over 50 \ 100kb/s.!

BitDefender sez that patch (EvID4226Patch223d-en.zip) has “Backdoor.Virkel.A” in it… nice link mate ):

Some AntiVir Software vendors added the patcher into their virus-definitions. The patcher is often detected as ‘Tool/EvID’. But as a first info:
    The patcher ist NO VIRUS.
Some virus and trojanwriter uses the same technique to increase the limit. After that its easier for them to spread to other computers in the internet. This runs without knowledge of the user. So he is not informed about what’s going on.
With the patcher here, every user can decide on his own if he wants to change the file and if yes how high the limit should be. Also the user will be warned if he chooses to high limits, as already infected machines will spread existent viruses and trojans easier to the net. So everybody can choose on its own and is not forced to. The patcher itself does not contain malware.
The virus-notification therefore should be seen as an information that this program contains the functionality to increase the limit. If that program is not known or has not been installed you can delete it.
I hope I have answered some questions.

The thing with the patch helped me dramatically! I’ve been trying to get my torrent to work right for months and this is all I had to do the whole time.

It seems like half of these people dont read this page before they ask their questions! I have seen the same question asked 20 times, with the answer to the question they are asking written here 50 times! You people should read before you ask and save everyone the trouble.
