Speed up your torrents

Written by Ernesto on November 30, 2005

Help! BitTorrent is slow… This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get about BitTorrent. Unfortunately there’s not some kind of magic trick that makes your torrents go through the roof. But you could take some simple steps to optimize your speeds.

1. Cap your upload (most important)

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.

2. Hack the max TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more on this).

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port.

By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall

It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

If you don't like torrents try MP3 Fiesta. They hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal

“i was working my ass off to try the port forwarding thingy. i followed the instructions in portforward.com.one of the steps requires me to have a static ip.the problem i tried and failed configuring a static ip.then i checked my subscription and found out that the package i subscribed doent include a static ip.is that the reason i can get a static ip manually?if not, what can i do? ”

The portforward.com guide includes a link to a step by step procedure for setting up a static IP; you do NOT need to pay for a static IP from your ISP to do this…just follow the guide, it works.

    READ:

I guess I have the most formulated concept: That works miracles on private internal IPS from any broadband LAN ISPs, such as 192.168.0.79, 172.16.4.87, and so on.

STEPS TO FOLLOW TO MAXIMIZE THE “DOWNLOAD” PERFORMANCE IN AZUREUS:

    1. Remember to have at least five to six upload pear clients in each download. CONCURRENCY FOR THE DOWNLOAD FORMULATIONS.

    2. Remember each torrent’s max upload download limits to round to 0!!!! FOR MAXIMUM THROUGHPUT AFTER SOME MINUTES WHEN MORE PEERS JOIN IN.

    3. Enable all peer sources and including the UPNP plugin.

    4. Put on the Proxy: That’s mean it!!! Your own broadband login id and password and your ISP’s Primary LAN IP address, its handy to put on more effort for Average Accellaration and it might help.

    5. Max simultaneous outbound connection attempts can be > 30.

    6. Maximum Global Upload speed should be > 40 KB/s as it would give average formulated advantage when more peers connect, and then you can get average and better speeds almost continously! Less time taken to download anything.

    7. Max connections globally: 250 or more depending on the Broadband bandwidth.

    8. No limits on LAN max upload or download speeds. Must be 0 or unlimited to speed up the average downloading!!!!

    9. Friendly hash checking: Untick because it could harm the average speed.

    Respectively,
    tushar

And remember, only Azureus and Windows XP is better when downloading huge dvds.

So i used the Event patch (opened up 10000) and my D/L speeds at my school just jumped from 0.2 kb/s to 25.5 kb/s

Gonna do some more but a def. improvement.

People are looking to forward a port on their router and are concerned that their service provider does not offer a static ip. The static ip that you need to set up is not between your service provider and your router, but between your router and your comp.

Set a static ip in your network config (you know -network connections- local area network - properties - internet protocol)
The reason that you port forward is because your router has a firewall and you are poking a hole through it so that you can pour downloads through it to your comp.

Also when changing router configs use internet explorer cause i swear noone wrote them to work with firefox.

    Hope this helps

HELPFUL TIP: REALLY HELPS!!!! Try gradually incresing your upload speed until you get the highest donwload rate, when it starts going down back up a little, it helped me, i had upload to 35KB/s and was downloading at 29KB/s now i set upload to 60KB/s and am getting 100KB/s download! TRY! do not limit upload speeds. increase until its optimized =D

    164 Feb 27, 2007 at 07:58 by alex

oh and im downloading an 8GB FILE! which is at 72.1% right now going 111KB/s =o all because i increased upload rate significantly.

my utorrent still hassn’t sped up when my upload rate is at 251kb/s per second and i don’t know what to do next,i just caught a stupid virus not long ago,and now i’ve had windows redone i’ve just done all this stuff, windows only has only been redone like last night and then it goes and changes files to different ones from a pontentially unsafe source, and the uttorent issn’t going any faster, please help

This guide did help me a bit but not much.
I setup my torrent program (uTorrent) in my ruter modem and that made a whole lot of difference. My speed went from 200kbps to 700kbps and uploading up to 80kbps.
    Thanks for the ruter tips!
    My connection is 20000kbps/2500kbps.

Maybe in the future i find some tips to speed it up more, but it depends much on the seeders and peers.

Anyway I am very pleased and can download torrents fast +surf the www +radio at the same time. And the speed is still 400kbps++ :D

I just tuned and joined a private torrent site. Oh my lord I just looked at the speed now. Its a wooping 1250kbps/40kbps. Did not now it was capable of going that high. Then I got 200+seeders and 3000+ peers. HUGE SPEED. LUCKY ME :D

Comodo is the most impressive firewall I’ve used so far, the “Pro” version is completely free. It asks you questions constantly for the first two days or so, which was really irritating, but if you tell it remember all of your responses, the “learning” mode it uses starts to handle everything the way that I wanted it to pretty quickly. So far as I know, it doesn’t block uTorrent, haven’t had any noticeable problems.

Can I just say that this article was very helpful to me. Unfortunately I am one of those users thats still on 512. Usually that means I can download at about 60k/s however I was only averaging 15k/s with bit torrent.

After doing the things described in this article I can now download up to my full bandwidth with bit torrent.

    Thanks!
