Speed up your torrents

Written by Ernesto on November 30, 2005

Help! BitTorrent is slow… This is probably one of the most frequently asked questions I get about BitTorrent. Unfortunately there’s not some kind of magic trick that makes your torrents go through the roof. But you could take some simple steps to optimize your speeds.

1. Cap your upload (most important)

Limit your upload speed to approximately 80 percent of your maximum upload rate. You can check your upload speed over here (never trust your isp). Once you know your maximum upload speed, change the max upload (to 80%) speed in your torrent client’s preferences.

Don’t get me wrong, everyone should share as much as possible, but if your upload rate reached it’s max, your download rate suffers significantly.

2. Hack the max TCP connections

If you’re on XP sp2, your TCP connections are limited to a maximum of 10. This seriously hurts your downloading speed because it wont let you connect to a high amount of ip numbers. It is supposed to slow down viruses because their spreading strategy is to connect to a high amount of ip numbers, but it also cripples your torrent downloads.
A nice way to fix this is to download this patch, it allows you to set the maximum allowed connections to any number you want. Any number between 50 and 100 is ok (more on this).

3. Check seeds and peers

A simple tip, but o so important. Always look for torrents with the best seed/peer ratio. The more seeds (compared to peers) the better (in general). So 50 seeds and 50 peers is better than 500 seeds and 1000 peers. So, be selective.

4. Change the default port.

By default, BitTorrent uses a port 6881-6999. BitTorrent accounts for a lot of the total internet traffic (1/3), so isp’s like to limit the connection offered on the these ports. So, you should change these to another range. Good clients allow you to do this, just choose anything you like. If you’re behind a router, make sure you have the ports forwarded or UPnP enabled.

5. Disable Windows Firewall

It sucks. Windows Firewall hates P2P and often leads a life of it’s own. So disable it and get yourself a decent firewall, Kerio or Zone Alarm for example.

Last but not least… Buy a faster connection…

If you don't like torrents try MP3 Fiesta. They hold nearly 67,000 albums from nearly 17,000 artists. Prices are around the $0.10 mark for single tracks with full albums coming in at roughly $1.00. Tracks are available from 192kbps and they take major credit cards and PayPal

What I never understood is how programs like mIRC with XDCC Klipper allow me to get anywhere from 500kbps to 2mbps downloads per file, with 10 files downloading at the same time and torrent programs can only match p2p speeds.

Torrenting BG II: SoA & ToB.

    80 peers, 35 seeds.

My speeds fluctuate from 10kbps to 50kbps, average being 25 or so.

I did the port forwarding, and he triggering. Using Windows 2k on an wireless network with 3 other computers, mine being the only torrenter. I just use the original Bittorrent. I can’t figure out how to manipulate anything to get anywhere higher than 50 kbps Dx

    I have a question… or more xD

What should be an ideal connection? At wich speed? :/ For down and uploading of course.

My internet connection is supposed to be 100 Mbps, but as far as I been reading there is a difference between “b” and “B” xD (bit and bytes I guess…)

So.. how much is 100 Mb in kB? I’m not so very good at these things, forgive me =(

One last question, how do I enable UPnP?

    Many thanks.

Ok, I am using microTorrent as a client on my xp sp2. Now the problem is that whenever I start downloading it slows the internet speeds to a crawl! I mean the entire network comes to a halt and I can no longer use the web. Even though microtorrent (utorrent) is downloading it really really slowly. I have to run it at night when everyone is sleeping. What to do about this? please email me directly my gmail account user id : arthur.orange

    THanks!!

Hey, I’m doing a torrent and have been running it for several days. I know there are 700+ peers and 500+ are seeders. But when I open bittorrent, i get about 13 peers (12 seeds). I have done port forwarding and have upnp (unpn?) enabled. It appears that I am only downloading from one of my peers. Other people are getting 800kbps+ on this, anyone have any ideas?

how do i change my connectin back?

    194 Oct 18, 2007 at 00:12 by simo8604

basicaly torrent speeds determine how many seeds/peers and how much they are allowing you to upload in speed, if your downloading something and the speeds are slow and dont pick up after 30mins then try downloading another torrent, i downloaded a movie that was going to take 7hours on my 20mb broadband, canceled, downloaded another torrent of the ame film and took just 40mins, although all the above can help (slightly) it is still all based on the seeds/peers you are downloading from.

    “…Max Upload speed 10kb/s”

Bah-Humbug!! Don’t cap your Upload so much unless you have to! I get excellent speeds with Upload capped at 80. At this moment I am getting 300 down 60 up while torrenting two tv shows. I have a 5 megabit connection. I know you specified that you have “…a 2mb net connection” but 10k is to low IMO.

Play with your up cap, see what actually effects your down speed.

Outside of portforwarding (and encryption, damn you ISP!) the thing that has helped my speed the most is finding good trackers, lots of them…
