So where do we go from here? What's the next step, what's hot and what will 2006 bring to the BitTorrent community? More rss? AJAX? a little more web 2.0?

Tioti
One promising project that tries to incorporate these things, and is going to be released this year is "tape it of the internet" (tioti). Tapeitofftheinternet is combining BitTorrent, rss, great design and a social network to create a community for sharing tv related torrents.

Some screenshots (removed from the actual site)

To date this service is pre-beta, but if this project is finalized, it will be a gret step forward for BitTorrent.

Allpeers
Another project that will have a great impact is the allpeers extension for Firefox. The allpeers extension makes it possible to share pictures, music and video’s within Firefox. I would never recommend to use it as a BitTorrent client, but that’s not really what it’s ment for anyway. However, it’s definately a great way to make use of the BitTorrent protocol.

Both project are in the private Beta phase… well at least we have something to look forward to this year.

Two thing that shook up the BitTorrent community in 2005 (clientwise). First the intoduction of so called "trackerless torrents". Second: uTorrent, a lightweight torrent client with a lot of features.

1. Trackerless torrents

In 2005 all the popular clients included DHT layer support (Distributed Hash Table). These DHT layers “decentralize” torrents what make them more stable and less reliant on the web based trackers. If a web based tracker goes down, the torrents stay alive because several peers can act as “nodes” keeping the swarm intact (this may sound vague, but trust me, it works).

Clients that support DHT are: Azureus, Bitcomet, Bitspirit, BitTorrent official, Shareaza, Turbotorrent and uTorrent.

2. uTorrent

uTorrent has all the advanced feature you need, but uses less cpu and memory. Within a couple of months uTorrent has become one of the most popular torrent clients along with Azureus and Bitcomet.

When suprnova.org was taken offline 19 december 2004, there was a gap to fill. Initially lokitorrent took over. Lokitorrent's traffic tripled within a week. But a month later lokitorrent died too.

The weeks and months after that, new sites were launched. Some of these grew out to be among the most popular torrent sites by the end of 2005. By far the most popular “new” site is mininova.org. Mininova started in januari 2005, but within 3 months, mininova wasn’t mini anymore. And now, almost a year later they are in the top 3 of all torrent sites, based on the traffic they get.

But there are more successful newcomers. Seedler.org, Newnova.org and Snarf-it.org all made it to the top torrent sites within a relatively short time.

But not only newcomers jumped into the gap. Sites like torrentspy.com and thepiratebay are now far more popular than a year ago. This is not just because suprnova died. The sites themselves made quite some progress, and BitTorrent’s popularity is still growing.

A second gap that needed to be filled was the TV-torrent “gap”. Btefnet.net was the most popular TV-torrent site until the MPAA decided to target TV-torrent sites in May 2005.
Lately new TV-torrent sites gain in popularity, tvtorrent.info and btseasonpass.com look promising.

But the combination of rss and BitTorrent is also well suited to catch the latest TV-torrents. You don’t even need to visit torrent sites anymore, just use Thunderbird or TVtad.

Torrent sites go down. That's the way it always has been, and this is also true for 2005.
Source: TorrentFreak, for the latest info on copyright, file-sharing and anonymous VPN services.

However, the reason why torrent sites go down changed over time. Two years ago most sites went offline every now and then because the server crashed, and couldn’t handle all the traffic. In 2005 most sites went down because of legal issues.

So what went down in 2005?

Giving an extensive list would be undoable, so I’ll stick by some major impact cases…

Lokitorrent
Lokitorrent was taken offline by the MPAA. Initially Lokitorrent’s owner Ed Webber was determined to fight the MPAA. He collected donations to pay for the legal costs and penalties. Within a few weeks Lokitorrent raised over $40,000 However, lokitorrent was taken offline anyway.

Btefnet
Btefnet.net was the most popular TV-torrent site until the MPAA decided to take it down in May 2005. At first they were determined to come back, but untill now the site points to some sort of a scam organization. They are still active on irc though (#bt on Efnet).
In the meanwhile sites like tvtorrent.info and btseasonpass.com took over.

ThePiratebay
The piratebay went down in May 2005. They let the general public believe that they were forced to by swedish anti-piracy organisations, but this was a HOAX. They came back after a few days, new and improved. This is probably one of the best publicity stunts in the history of BitTorrent. When ThePiratebay came back, their traffic quadrupled.

Snarf-it
Snarf-it, a torrent site built on the ashes of the suprnovaforums went offline in oktober 2005. They were forced to leave the Netherlands because the Dutch antipiracy organization “BREIN” was planning to take down all torrent sites located in the Netherlands.
So the Snarf packed it’s stuff, erased the harddrive, moved to a safer location. The site was relaunched on 19 december exactly one year after suprnova died, with a new look.
