Owned by Warner Music, Sony BMG, EMI and Vivendi Universal, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has been forced into ignominious retreat after harrasing Larry Scantlebury and then telling his children it would generously allow them 60 days to mourn for their father, who died this June, before continuing with this element of their bizarre sue ‘em all marketing campagn.

“Our hearts go out to the Scantleberry family for their loss,” says RIAA mouthpiece Jonathan Lamy unblushingly in what will certainly go down as one of the most disgustingly fulsome statements ever to be issued by an organization that’s infamous for its bald-faced lies.

“We had decided to temporarily suspend the productive settlement discussions we were having with the family,” says Lamy, quoted in Boing Boing.

“Mr. Scantleberry had admitted that the infringer was his stepson, and we were in the process settling with him shortly before his passing. Out of an abundance of sensitivity, we have elected to drop this particular case.”

“Query,” posts Ray Beckerman on Recording Industry vs The People.

“What do they mean by ‘this particular lawsuit’? The lawsuit against the decedent would have had to be withdrawn anyway. Are they going to now sue Mr. Scantlebury’s son? Or have they given the Scantlebury family enough grief’?”

Stay Tuned…

The defendant in this case passed away before the court made a ruling. However, according to the RIAA this was not enough to “close the case”.

Instead, the RIAA gives the family of the deceased defendant 60 days to grieve, before they start taking depositions of the late Mr. Scantlebury’s children.

In the “motion to stay case and extend all deadlines” we read:

Plaintiffs do not believe it appropriate to discuss a resolution of the case with the family so close to Mr. Scantlebury’s passing. Plaintiffs therefore request a stay of 60 days to allow the family additional time to grieve.

Way to go….

TorrentFreak was pretty much a one man thing, but that’s about to change. I would like to introduce you to Mathias Hellsten, our new contributer from Sweden.

Why? Well there are a couple of reasons. First of all, I thought it would be nice to have an insider reporting from pirate-loving Sweden. So Mathias will mostly report on the developments in the Swedish Pirate Party, the Piratebay case, and keep us updated on other noteworthy developments in Sweden.

But even more important, he is a great writer.

Mathias Hellsten is a 27 years old Swede from Stockholm. He worked as a reporter for a local newspaper a few years back. Currently, he spends some time as a local lead for the Pirate Party in his area of residence.

This fall he will start a fulltime study. In the meanwhile he does freelance copywriting and translating jobs on a basis. Earlier this year Mathias started the blog Maskilim (down for restructuring) together with a friend, this blog focuses on the middle east. Meanwhile I am occasionally writing for the Swedish blog al-hamatzav which covers Mid-East issues. As some might know, he is also the brain behind Piracy Unlimited as well as Boxbreaker, his Swedish language blog on general political questions, mainly Swedish politics.

Mathias is a fan of open source and p2p and he knows how to put his thoughts on these issues on paper.

Welcome Mathias!

Tribler is a successful research project funded by the Dutch government. However, it looks like Tribler will have some competition form “torrent swapper”.

So what’s the deal?

Torrent Swapper is an open sourced powerful, clean, fast, and easy-to-use BitTorrent client with special social abilities. That means you can get Amazon like recommendations from peers to find new and interesting files, and download double your current torrent download speed using uploading capabilities of your friends.

I haven’t tried “torrent swapper” myself, but I like the social functionalities. However, I also greatly value my privacy…

BookMooch is a new p2p book sharing protocol for printed books. It works a little like BitTorrent, the more you share, the more you receive. And you will be banned if your share ratio gets below 5:1.

The inquirer writes:

The cashless site runs on a simple points system. Members receive one point for sending a book, and pay a point when they receive a book. Books sent internationally and books on members’ favourite books lists are worth two points, which provides extra incentive to supply these. Members also earn a point for every ten books they list on BookMooch. Membership is free.

There is a problem, and thus a significant difference from the real BitTorrent: The books have to go from A to B, and that costs money.

So if you’re a real bookworm with a not-to-delicate book taste, it is probably cheaper to have an additional library membership. But the idea is great, and if it has the potential to become the biggest library in the world. BookMooch founder John Buckman even thinks about launching “MoochFests”.

I was thinking of “MoochFests” where a group of people meet physically, say at a cafe, to exchange a pile of books they’ve all decided to mooch from each other. That would be a way to avoid postage, but more importantly, meet people with similar book tastes and possibly make friends.
