Grammy award-winning artist Swizz Beatz has publicly defended his role with Megaupload. The U.S. authorities hinted recently they might involve Beatz more in the case, but the rapper/producer seems unfazed. "I'm a fan of music, i'm a fan of people who work hard and I would never be a part of anything that's taking from artists when I fight so hard to give so much to the artist," he said in a new interview. "You know what I was doing, I was giving artists 90% of the shit."
Source: TorrentFreak, for the latest info on copyright, file-sharing and anonymous VPN services.

On the day Megaupload was taken down, record producer and rapper Swizz Beatz was listed as company CEO on the site’s homepage.

The 33-year-old had been working with the file-hoster months earlier, having been deeply involved in the creation of the controversial Mega Song promotion.

Following the arrest of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom and his associates, Beatz initially kept a low profile, leading some to question what his role was within the company. But things are slowly becoming more clear.

Speaking with Al Lindstrom, Swizz Beatz is standing firm on his connections to the now-defunct file-hosting site and seeking to clarify some important points. Beatz says he is pro-artist, through and through, and his work with Megaupload did not run counter to that, it enhanced it.

“I’m a fan of music, i’m a fan of people who work hard and I would never be a part of anything that’s taking from artists when I fight so hard to give so much to the artist,” Beatz explained.

“You know what I was doing – I was giving artists 90% of the shit.”

Beatz was referring to Megabox, a project Kim Dotcom said would put the “dinosaur record labels” out of business. The plan was to give consumers free access to music, financed through the use of an advertising browser plug-in.

The big difference as far as the music industry is concerned is that with the Megabox setup the labels wouldn’t be taking the lion’s share of the revenue as they do now – Megabox would take 10% and the remaining 90% would go to the artists. That leaves 0% for the suited middle men and as the theory goes, they were very unhappy about that.

“You know, sometimes when something is so powerful and people can’t control it, that kind of attack [raiding Megaupload] happens,” adds Beatz. “You see that happen with multiple things in life, you see things that are so powerful they get shut down unexplainably.”

Beatz, real name Kasseem Dean, also points out that despite being labeled the biggest copyright infringement hub on the planet, Megaupload was never sued by the movie companies or record labels.

“There’s other companies doing ten times worse – they ain’t getting touched,” he said.

And he’s right, at least if the IFPI’s own stats are to be believed. As revealed in our article yesterday, a leaked IFPI report shows just how insignificant Megaupload was when it came to carrying infringing links.

“But my thing is like, time will tell everything, you know what i’m saying? People will see what’s what, who’s who,” Beatz predicts.

“My track record speaks for itself. I’m in the business of inspiring, so I can’t be in the business of inspiring if i’m so-called robbing my friends. And my friends know that, that’s why there ain’t nobody saying no clown shit about me because they know my character and they know what it is.”

Kim Dotcom insists that far from being ruined, Megabox will still come to market.

“Some of the world’s top artists have lined up to launch with us and I want to make sure that they have the launch that they deserve,” Dotcom told TorrentFreak.

Will Swizz Beatz be among them? Time will tell….

In their most recent filing the U.S. authorities have mentioned Grammy winning rapper/producer Swizz Beatz as a potential U.S. representative for Megaupload. In response to Megaupload's motion to dismiss based on lack of jurisdiction, the feds are trying to find a way to serve the company on U.S. soil. Beatz, husband of R&B superstar Alicia Keys, was previously listed as Megaupload's CEO but the authorities say he is refusing to cooperate with the investigation.
Source: TorrentFreak, for the latest info on copyright, file-sharing and anonymous VPN services.

On the day Megaupload was shut down, the company website listed rapper/producer Swizz Beatz as company CEO.

The popular rapper/producer was one of the stars who endorsed MegaUpload in public, and he reportedly recruited several artists for the Mega Song promotion.

Beatz, real name Kasseem Dean, is married to R&B superstar Alicia Keys. He won his first Grammy Award in 2011 with Jay Z for the song “On To The Next One.”

But despite his strong ties to Megaupload, Beatz was not named in the indictment as a member of the “Mega Conspiracy.” However, now that the case is progressing, Beatz is being involved by the U.S. authorities.

In the most recent filing the U.S. opposes Megaupload’s motion to dismiss based on a lack of jurisdiction. The defense team argued that Megaupload can’t be subjected to a criminal prosecution, because the law doesn’t allow foreign companies to be served. However, the U.S. disagrees.

United States Attorney Neil MacBride sums up a variety of reasons why it can, and in a footnote it is mentioned that Megaupload previously employed two CEOs living in the U.S.

“After Defendant Dotcom became Defendant Megaupload’s Chief Innovation Officer, the company appears to have employed at least two Chief Executive Officers in the United States: first David Robb and then Kasseem David Dean (also known as Swizz Beatz),” the filing reads.

Beatz plugs Dotcom’s Twitter

MacBride goes on to state that Beatz officially represented Megaupload before the United States Trade Representative, when it was accused of being a piracy haven December last year. In addition, the authorities have requested Beatz’s cooperation with the Megaupload investigation, which he has refused.

“Mr. Dean through counsel has refused to cooperate with the government’s investigation,” the United States Attorney writes.

Voluntarily or not, the U.S. authorities believe Beatz may become involved in the case since they view him as one of the individuals through which they can serve the company.

“Delivering a summons to Mr. Dean, a resident of the United States, in his capacity as apparent Chief Executive Officer should also constitute proper service of process upon an officer of the company,” the filing reads.

Whether the above will help to overcome the jurisdiction issues, and the fact that foreign companies can’t be served, is now for the courts to decide.

A few months ago District Court Judge O’Grady already acknowledged that this “issue” warrants further investigation, suggesting that it could be the beginning of the end for the Megaupload case. A case that just got even more high-profile now Swizz Beatz has been dragged into it.

In yet another surprise move, file-sharing site MegaUpload has quietly appointed rapper / producer Swizz Beatz as its new CEO. Swizz Beatz, who's married to Alicia Keys, is claimed to have played a key role in recruiting some of the A-list stars who endorsed the site in the controversial Mega Song campaign. The appointment of the prominent rapper is not going to be applauded by the major music labels, who describe Megaupload as a piracy haven.
Source: TorrentFreak, for the latest info on copyright, file-sharing and anonymous VPN services.

One of the many unanswered questions regarding the MegaUpload shutdown today is what happens to the company’s new CEO?

A few days ago MegaUpload surprised friends and foes by listing rapper/producer Swizz Beatz as CEO. Beatz is not named in the indictment which was made on January the 5th, which may have saved him.

Beatz was one of the stars who endorsed MegaUpload in public, and he reportedly recruited several artists for the Mega Song promotion.

Beatz, whose real name is Kasseem Dean, is married to R&B superstar Alicia Keys, and won his first Grammy Award in 2011 with Jay Z for the song “On To The Next One.” Aside from working at MegaUpload, Beatz is also producing Dr. Dre’s highly anticipated third studio album Detox.

Beatz’s appointment connected MegaUpload to many of the biggest musicians in the business. This could have come in handy as MegaUpload founder Kim Dotcom was working on a plan to crush the major “dinosaur” labels, who he says are not giving musicians what they deserve.

Mega’s competing music venture is/was called Megabox, a site that would soon allow artists to sell their creations directly to consumers. And unlike the traditional record deals where artists get only a fraction of the revenue, with Megabox the musicians would get to keep 90% of earnings.

Needles to say, the raids and arrests today delayed this plan.
