Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip
Written by Ernesto on August 02, 2007Jhannet Sejas, a 19 year old girl was immediately arrested by the police after she recorded a 20 second clip from the movie “Transformers” that she wanted to show to her little brother. She now faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
Sejas was celebrating her 19th Birthday with her boyfriend in a local theater in Arlington. A few minutes after she taped the short clip the police came rushing in and took her into custody on the charges of “being a pirate”.
Sejas and her boyfriend were promptly escorted out of the movie theater, still confused about what just happened. “I was crying, I’ve never been in trouble before.”, she later said in a response to the trip to the police station.
Of course Sejas had no intention to sell the 600 millisecond clip, she wasn’t even planning to put it on YouTube. The only thing she wanted to do was show it to her 13 year old brother, who was dying to see the movie himself. Unluckily theater owners just introduced their new zero-tolerance policy since everyone can be a pirate.
Kendrick Macdowell, a representative National Association of Theater Owners said in a response: “We cannot educate theater managers to be judges and juries in what is acceptable. Theater managers cannot distinguish between good and bad stealing.”
Good and bad stealing? Nuts!, the guy obviously has no clue what he’s talking about. If all theater owners treat their customers like this they will start to lose even more money than they already do now. And guess who they will be blaming? Right, Pirates.
Sejas will go to trial later this month for recording a motion picture without permission, and is facing up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Seriously unbelievable.

You guys (the criminals who steal) are the ones to blame.
Sorry, but sharing is not stealing ;) No matter how the profit obsessed capitalists want to change the definition of stealing to suit them and their goals.
How is the fact that: somebody has produced something, and somebody else takes the material to “share” at their own expense, not stealing??????????????
If I come up with a cancer vaccine (let’s be ridiculous), and somebody else took the credit and the money for it, would that be correct?
Get out of here. If you’re against capitalism, then move to a communist country. Anybody who creates something has a moral right to protect, and profit, off of their creation.
Wow I had nothing against downloading a movie but I know it’s wrong. Reading these comments it’s disturbing to see that so many people feel they are entitled to steal just because they want it. Nowadays people are just becoming selfish pigs who care about nothing but themselves and cry when they don’t get instant gratification. Don’t get me wrong, it’s ok the be against “the man” and big business but have valid reasons not just trying to justify stealing.
Exactly. I’m also willing to bet that 95% of these people are politically liberal.
You guys need to read the article. She’s not being charged for being a thief and stealing the movie to sell. She is being charged for “recording a motion picture without permission.” It doesn’t matter if you are going to sell it or not, it’s illegal to record a movie period. Now was it a little harsh to drag her out of the theater? Possibly, but she did break the law, whether it was for her 13 year old brother or to sell on the internet.
I couldn’t agree more. Personally, I think it’s asinine for the MPAA to do. Then again, they can’t discriminate from one criminal to another. I do NOT think the girls life should be ruined, but it’s not the MPAA to blame.
The people to blame are YOU: the criminals who consistently steal somebody elses creations.
Fail.
Freaking fail.
What does being liberal have to do with anything? And are we talking about the political party, because if so, let me go round up some republicans who pirate movies.
I’m so disappointed in almost everything in the world right now.
If this had happened to you ‘the law is the law’ asshats you’d be whining so hard right now.
20 seconds and 600 milliseconds are not the same thing so which was it?
I wonder what’s worse, that it took until the 26th comment for someone to point that out or that the author those they were ;-)
This girl broke the law, plain and simple.
Ever hear of “fair use”?
Harsh, but required.
You guys (the criminals who steal) are the ones to blame. When a law is enforced, innocents will suffer, unfortunately. But what you criminals fail to realize is: you guys are the reason they have such laws.
Are you a comedian? You sure are funny.

but to make things a bit more personal, the Jai person, stop sucking corporate cock and get a brain, to all you who say the law is the law, one of these days you’ll probably get fucked in the ass from by the law and you better keep the little maxim with you
“oh yes officer, so what if i was going 31 in a 30 area as i was slowing down because i just realized, the law is the law the law is the law OW the law is the law OW the law is the law, think its starting to bleed back there OW!” im done fare thee well
20 seconds? That must surely come under citation fair use :-)
I would sue the idiot theater for a few millions for psychological trauma.
In Mexico City you can buy any new movie that is on a movie theater right now like the simpsons, transformers, etc, etc, the cost of the movies are real cheap less than $10 dollars.
That piracy things that some theaters on the USA try to do are useless because I am sure that in some theathers they let pirates use camcorders to film all the movie, also I am sure that they record the DVDs directly from the original tapes.
lol… made in the USA . times like this i thank god i do not live in such a lame country as UNITED STATES OF AMERICA a melting pot of stupidity, freedom of “speech” and similiar “democratic” bullshit …
… a country sure to collapse from inside … i give you another 50-70 years… there is no military power so strong that can defeat you, but still you country is so fragile, so unstable it is almost ironic… only fear keeps your society together… and this fear will ultimately destroy your rotten society… next big war will be american civil war (a race war) ….just a historic fact…
ps. i feel sorry for all you americans who actually can think with your brain
“Seriously unbelievable.”
Not at all - its the law you freek. She broke it she deserves to be punished. No sympathy for her - ignorance is NOT AN EXCUSE.
personally I hope they throw the book at her !
She’ll get off. They’ll run her record. Notice she has none. They’ll listen to her story. It plays out.
Done deal. She’s in and out of court in 15 mins.
doubt that my friend … this one will run for a while. A she’ll end up with the full fine. And this is just going to be the first of many
WTF!? I can’t read this without feeling sick and discusted with the law, its 20 seconds on a fucking Mobile Phone WTF!? When i went to go see Transformers there was Asians in my theatre smoking and dealing drugs yet they don’t do fuck all to solve that?? Its just discusting im furious!
listen to all you idiots.
“I’m never going to a theatre again”
“boycott movies!!”
“yeah the MPAA sucks, man”
There’s always a huge notice that comes up before ANY film that says DO NOT RECORD THIS FILM.
and what does she do? she records the film. What if it was a super-film like Harry Potter, and she recorded some crucial moment with intent to put it on youtube. All we have is her word that ‘it was for my brother’ …. why can’t she just tell him what happened?
From the theatres point of view, and rightly so, anyone who points device at a movie screen is probably recording it.
To the guy who said he was checking the time and putting it on vibrate - can’t you do that with it on your lap?? (if it was on his lap, and totally innocuous then that’s a different matter, but i doubt it was)
It’s perfectly simple it’s as illegal to steal (’record’) a film, as it is illegal to steal someone’s money. - “Oh but it’s okay it’s for my brother” WHAT??!!?!?
She’s an idiot and so are all of you for rising up like the geek-twats you are in rebellion of the ‘tyranny and brutal regime’ of the MPAA.
So please boycott movie theatres, you’ll make me happy.
Fools
God, I am so happy I live in Sweden. I recently used my digital camera to take a picture of the harry potter movie to make a joke about Voldemort not having any hair. I put it on a internet community and no one wants to put me in jail. Stupid american corporations…

What an idiot!
Dude, there are the law, and then there are laws that are used UNETHICAL. That’s when you are using a law, when there are no use of it - it can be simply said like: No, you may not record such stuff, please delete it. - Then she would say: Oh im so sorry.
END OF FUCKING DEAL.
Idiot.

What do you mean: stop calling people CRIMINALS. That’s EXACTLY what you all are. Yes, 15 pounds for a CD. If you don’t like it, then here are your options:
1) Listen to free artists
2) Quit listening to music
3) Only listen to cheaper music.
YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO MUSIC.
Get over yourselves, CRIMINALS. There is NOTHING unethical about a PERSON PROTECTING HIS/HER CREATION.
You’re the unethical ones, CRIMINALS.

Get them, go get them. I record movies ALL THE TIME. The difference is: I DON’T COMPLAIN WHEN SOMEONE ENFORCES A JUSTIFIED LAW!
You’re telling me that it’s unjustified for an artist to protect his/her creation?
I guess nothing ANYBODY creates should be copyright protected anymore.
Face it LIBERALS: you’re “its unethical” card has been played out.
I download as much as the next person, but I don’t try to justify it: we are all criminals, and deserve the title.
to be honest - she was openly caught recording a film in a cinema, thats the end of deal in my opinion.
There are plenty of warnings on films now saying “you will get boned sideways if you use any recording equipment” which is pretty clear.
1) Why record it on your phone in the first place - its going to be shit quality
2) You got caught recording / pirating copyrighted material. Suck it up and deal with it. I’m sure if a proper cam ripper was caught he wouldn’t get away with “oh it’s illegal? I’m sorry here have the tape”.
Yes its a little heavy handed to be arrested but really, its a pretty dumb thing to do…
Go darwin!
(and no i don’t support the MPAA or RIAA either)
poor girl

Should I infer from your opinion that, even after you had gained millions for you vaccine through countless pharmaceutical contracts, you would still be unwilling to facilitate it to someone who couldn’t afford it?
That, my friend, is where capitalism ends and greed begins.
