Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie Clip

Written by Ernesto on August 02, 2007

Jhannet Sejas, a 19 year old girl was immediately arrested by the police after she recorded a 20 second clip from the movie “Transformers” that she wanted to show to her little brother. She now faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.

Teen Arrested for Recording 20 Second Movie ClipSejas was celebrating her 19th Birthday with her boyfriend in a local theater in Arlington. A few minutes after she taped the short clip the police came rushing in and took her into custody on the charges of “being a pirate”.

Sejas and her boyfriend were promptly escorted out of the movie theater, still confused about what just happened. “I was crying, I’ve never been in trouble before.”, she later said in a response to the trip to the police station.

Of course Sejas had no intention to sell the 600 millisecond clip, she wasn’t even planning to put it on YouTube. The only thing she wanted to do was show it to her 13 year old brother, who was dying to see the movie himself. Unluckily theater owners just introduced their new zero-tolerance policy since everyone can be a pirate.

Kendrick Macdowell, a representative National Association of Theater Owners said in a response: “We cannot educate theater managers to be judges and juries in what is acceptable. Theater managers cannot distinguish between good and bad stealing.”

Good and bad stealing? Nuts!, the guy obviously has no clue what he’s talking about. If all theater owners treat their customers like this they will start to lose even more money than they already do now. And guess who they will be blaming? Right, Pirates.

Sejas will go to trial later this month for recording a motion picture without permission, and is facing up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine. Seriously unbelievable.

You guys (the criminals who steal) are the ones to blame. When a law is enforced, innocents will suffer, unfortunately. But what you criminals fail to realize is: you guys are the reason they have such laws.
OK another thought experiment…

If I go to the Louvre in Paris and take a photograph of the Mona Lisa, have I stolen the Mona Lisa? Is my photograph worth millions of dollars now able to be sold on the black market?

The Mona Lisa is worth millions upon millions. A postcard of the Mona Lisa is worth what? A few pennies, cost of production, etc. and then marked up for retail distribution so all the middle men get their penny.

Digital copying:
1) A reproduction with no cost of production whatsoever…
2) Not taking away an original work from the creator (much different than stealing a one of a kind painting)
3) An infinite asset = infinitely low value = free

Stealing as we have always known it is not going on here. This is a new thing that requires new thought and new laws. It is certainly not physical theft and a perversion of what copyright law was inteded to protect.

i will now “pirate” all my movies instead of paying almost 15 bucks for a ticket to a movie.

15 dollars? COME ON! Go to a matinée for $5.75!!!

Jai, if you ever dubbed something using your VCR, recorded a TV show with TIVO, dubbed a casette tape, then you broke the same laws.

Liberals suck, but I am a Libertarian, and for the most part I agree with the guys responses on here.

It is non anti-american, it is very american to be cautious that your freedom and liberties arent taken away.

The “Its The Law” type mentality, allows for facism to take over, without some sort of standing our ground, we would all be sitting here saying “seig heil” and not allowed to have any freedoms.

I guess you could say, let the first one with no sin, cast the first stone.

What do you say of that Jai.

… a country sure to collapse from inside … i give you another 50-70 years… there is no military power so strong that can defeat you, but still you country is so fragile, so unstable it is almost ironic… only fear keeps your society together… and this fear will ultimately destroy your rotten society… next big war will be american civil war (a race war) ….just a historic fact…
ps. i feel sorry for all you americans who actually can think with your brain
You do know that China has a standing army of 1.1million right? You do know thats more than every serving person that the US,UK and Canada have ALL TOGETHER? And that’s only the standing army, not the rest of it which is probably not far off.

Theres so many peoeple speaking out of their rear cakeholes on this blog I can’t even bring myself to read further down than the quote I have quoted. Shut up, get a life and if you’re going to P2P make sure you use a traceblocking program like PeerGuardian.

What exactly is your problem?
Stop calling people criminals, who the FUCK do you think you are you CUNT??
A CD for 15 € huh? Think about it!!!!
Now go and drown in your own stupidity!
What do you mean: stop calling people CRIMINALS. That’s EXACTLY what you all are. Yes, 15 pounds for a CD. If you don’t like it, then here are your options:
1) Listen to free artists
2) Quit listening to music
3) Only listen to cheaper music.

YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO MUSIC.

Get over yourselves, CRIMINALS. There is NOTHING unethical about a PERSON PROTECTING HIS/HER CREATION.

You’re the unethical ones, CRIMINALS.
Listen to yourself, fucktard: “YOU DO NOT HAVE A RIGHT TO MUSIC.”

You mean poor people, or whoever doesn’t have enough money to buy a CD player and 15 bucks CD’s DOESN’T HAVE A RIGHT TO MUSIC?

If you are old enough, you should know how it was between the 60s and 80s. Everyone shared music through cassete tapes, and even so, they’d buy LPs of their favorite bands BECAUSE THEY APPRECIATE THE WORK OF THAT SPECIFIC BAND OR SINGER, not because there was no other fucking way to listen to music.

The difference? Studios and artists weren’t fucking greedy that time. They’d be happy enough with fans and praise from the music lovers. Nowadays, there are tons of “commercial songs” being produced. Exactly: “COMMERCIAL” songs. It speaks for itself. Musics made do SELL albums, even if they are a piece of shit. Then the law enforces that you have to buy tons of shit to listen to one single music.

HA. Make me laugh.

it’s true she’s breaking the law, but the law itself is the main concern here. what kind of law is that, good thing i don’t live in the US fckn’ A.

It’s 20 seconds. Get a life MPAA.
The ruddy trailer usually shows more than 20 seconds, why don’t you sue yourself then?

First of all, to all the idiots who keep accusing this girl of “stealing,” shut up. It’s not theft or stealing. It’s copyright infringement, WHICH HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STEALING. Stealing is literally taking property from someone/something so that the entity you took it from no longer has it and you do. You can’t steal intellectual property, which is the whole reason why these things are copyrighted. They hardly lose any money from copyright infringement, despite the little numbers they give you about how they are losing sooooo much money every year… there are so many factors that go into those numbers that you cannot blame it on one facet.

Secondly, a “law” is a “law” simply because someone makes it a “law.” You people love your populist bullshit and will simply abide by any new law dished out there because “hey, it’s the law.” it goes along wiht that “if you’re not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about.” that’s not the fucking point. the point is some of these bullshit laws about intellectual property and copyrights are made solely for the idea of hording money. Open your fucking eyes people and realize you’re the ones getting fucked, not the MPAA, the RIAA, or other big corporations

Slavery was legal @ one time.
So I suppose if its “legal” its morally “ok”.

The movie and recording industry is nothing but a bunch of lazy fucks that rape there living off breaking the backs of the artists they promote.
Every time there work is viewed they want $$ with out any more work input on there end.
Screw them corporate assfucks.
Want more $$ then go do some more work ya lazy bumz.
Stop infringing on my stolen rights bought with the blood of many damn it.
I service autos for a living.
I get paid for each repair job I do.Once its completed thats it jobs done i get paid story ends..
Now if i was like the recording industry I would be charging for every time they drive there own auto.
What the MIAA/RIAA/MPA Are doing is straight up extortion imo.Legalized Extortion so i suppose that makes it “right”.
These Laws are nothing but murderous tools too freedom.Infringements on liberty. The ONLY Freedom in America is your freedom of choice over your path of economic enslavement.Slavery built this country . And slavery runs it too this day.Only a mind freed can see such truths.
Bottom line, these rich boys as always be greedy as they can be.
Not for long. If we (the pirates and the sensible) continue to boycott cinemas and download movies instead, we will eventually topple the regimes know as the MPAA, the RIAA, and the BSA. Then, we can implement a working system that allows the actors and musicians to make money, and the masses to share their works.

JAI JAI JAI, This is not about laws, this is about the people preventing buissness from taking our entire government and constitution away from us. Its a war that the “People” sometimes have to fight. And it will probably end up in bloodshed very soon, civil unrest = civil war.sure both sides wont agreed and we will kill our own kind over it. I know i will die trying to defend my constitutional rights and liberties as my ancestors died to provide them to me.P>S i hope you see this and can reply, you talk as if you have never, in your entire life, taped a show or movie from tv, or taken a photo with a sign or art or a tv in the background,or even a building in the background (which if you look around, yes even architecture is copyrighted and most buildings cannot be photographed without consent.)where are you employed BTW, Time fucking Warner?
