The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

The Most Popular Torrent Sites Of The Last Five Years

In a few months TorrentFreak turns five, and leading up to that milestone we will occasionally look back at how the BitTorrent landscape has changed over the years. Although there is no doubt that BitTorrent has more than quintupled its user base since 2005, there have been only a handful of sites serving a large slice of the masses.

Despite many legal battles and pressure from anti-piracy outfits, the lists of the most visited torrent sites through the years show very little change. In fact, in half a decade only five torrent sites have taken a spot in the top three, and all of these sites were founded before TorrentFreak launched back in 2005.

This suggests that the ecosystem is more stable and conservative than most think it is. Up to a certain degree this is true, but it’s not entirely invincible. Four out of the five websites have been dragged to court and two of them have suffered serious damage.

TorrentSpy was closed by its owner in 2008 after it lost a court case where it was ordered to hand over details of US-based users to the MPAA. Last year, Mininova decided to delete over a million torrents and restrict new uploads to pre-approved publishers following a court decision where it was ordered to filter content. Two other sites, The Pirate Bay and isoHunt, are still battling in court but continue to operate as of today.

Although only 5 sites have dominated the BitTorrent landscape in the last years, there is still room for new sites to move up. Founded in 2009, the relative newcomer KickassTorrents has already gained a spot in the top 5. If it continues to grow at the same pace as it has in the last few months, it might end up in the top 3 at the end of this year.

Below we’ve listed the top three BitTorrent sites of each year since we started following them. The rankings are based on the number of daily visitors each site had at the end of each year. The Pirate Bay is the only site that appears in all rankings. The 2010 list is reported as of today, and might change before the year is over.

The only site to be in all 5 years: The Pirate Bay. Take that TPB Haters!

  • Anonymous

I see The Pirate Bay’s on all of them. Cool list.

  • Em

Torrentz.com and isoHunt have been forgotten by me ever since I downloaded or found lots of fake files.

At least on TPB there’s a comment section where people actually exchange information and not spam like in the other two.

My Top 3 is: TPB, immortalseed, HD-Torrents and I also visit tehparadox. All I need.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, cool idea to put up a list.
Why not paint cool little targets instead TF?

oh wait… too late for that.

  • Yoshua Wuyts

Torrentz is merely a buffer to access TPB. TPB search engine fails from time to time, so torrentz is the solution given they have their own index ^^

@4 you give us more credit than we deserve obviously ;)

  • bootytape.com

I see that either Piratebay or Isohunt will be the next to be gone and then Torrentz will be the most popular. The Piratebay has been attacked the most and Isohunt the second most. Torrentz should survive for a good amount of time because they just show stats and link to other sites. I guess the future is separation of responsibility.

Kickasstorrents has more planned then yall even know! so stay with us and we’ll keep improving !!!!

  • Ivan

    1337x and demonoid <3

  • Spunk

Well for one this is only for public trackers and I’m sorry but TPB isn’t all that great, I buess it’s not to bad for a public tracker but in my opinion Demonoid is just as good. Also at least they check torrents and delete the crap if it’s uploaded.

Kickass torrents will never be a good site it blows it has from day 1 I still to this day prefer to use private trackers just b/c the speeds are far greater and they have some rules in place that help with stuff. If I do use a public one it’s demonoid and that’s usually for older harder to find movies or something.

  • Anonymous

Torrentz is the best aggregator around. Few fake files, and a huge list of trackers that you can add to any torrent file in just a few clicks.

And one of the best things is that it doesn’t host any torrent files, so it has little chance of being taken down!

  • Jelly

demonoid, torrent vault, hoftorrents. Also tehparadox, eztv.it and tastro. I miss torrent outpost.

  • Cornelia

Demonoid has a place in my heart but its so plagued but poor quality files.

I’m not an audiofiend but that community needs to wake up and stop spreading around 128-320 cbr files and get with it, v0 is the standard.

  • James

The Bay has been going for a while now but it lacks in quality and speed. If I ever used it I wouln’t see an incentive to seed

Those who praise private sites and criticize TPB should compare the vast amount of stuff available on TPB and their darling private sites.

BTW, if you think TPB speed sucks compared to private sites, then dont go to TPB, nobody is forcing you.

thats so sad its already been over a year since the dutch court ruling against mininova

  • Power2All

I use kickasstorrents or the private tracker I download from.
For anime I go either tokyotosho, AniRena or NyaaTorrents.

Wow, the epic battle of the trackers in the comment section! :) Congrats on the 5 TF! Keep on going!

  • Meafer

    @24

Oh fuck off. If you’ve never used these sites then you wouldn’t know if they’re miserable or not. Next time think before you post something stupid like that.

  • Kaptain Krunch

Next year TorrentFreak will be old enough for grade one.

  • m3

@24 I have tried many private trackers and find it more convient to just get what I need without having to join tens of private trackers because one or two/etc doesn’t have everything I want. If I choose public trackers, I can get anything I want without having to “join sites” just to get access then find out the sites don’t have what I’m looking for. Your whole argument “once you go private, you never go back is 100% false”. Try not to argue false arguments when you can be so easily disproved.

@15 “And one of the best things is that it doesn’t host any torrent files, so it has little chance of being taken down!”

And most of those links probably point right to The Pirate Bay. We are a team, a crew. Trying to wipe your hands like that is rude and although scraping is fine, credit needs to be given where credit is due and above all, TPB should be respected for what it has done to the torrent community.

isohunt is only a search engine for all the other torrent trackers (tpb, demonoid,etc.).

If you handle isohunt like the other torrent sites, how about google.com?

    My #1: http://www.demonoid.com

I like the 3 listed and most of those mentioned in the comments. http://www.SUMOTorrent.com is also one my faves because it’s fast & lists torrents from many other popular sites as well.

ThePirateBay search engine is always overloaded and once you get it to finally work you must now deal with all the spam and other crap that has been uploaded to the site and then cross your fingers that you what you are downloading is legit.

The only reason TPB is so popular is because of their media hype and the only people who use it are people who know squat about bittorrent. Because if you did you would have moved on already to many of the better public trackers that have popped up over the years.

Anyway I’m not hear to be pro private and boo public.

But TL & SCC are private trackers where you can find just about anything your little heart desires.

Don’t forget Demonoid, while not perfect I will take it over any public tracker.

  • harry krishna

i’m fat and happy with current situation. can i still comment?

  • Chris

For music and movies, private tracker are usually best because there’s a quality requirement, but for e-books, most software, games, tv shows, etc. public trackers are just easier, IMHO.

  • Giggity

I find TPB the best public torrent site for two simple reasons.

    1) They don’t try advertising “direct download” options for each torrent. A false gimmick to get you to pay for download speeds most cable users can’t even achieve with their connections.

    2) Comments. TPB has a large user base, making it that much easier to find a chance comment if someone doesn’t post a damn description. Since other sites basically index and store torrents uploaded either at TPB or one of their own, their descriptions are outdated, and they don’t have any comments there.

As for Torrentz, they just index links; basically they’re a torrent meta-search engine. Since it doesn’t actually host the torrents, if any torrent site goes down, all the links on Torrentz to that site become broken. Which, in my opinion, makes the site utterly useless to me.

You can debate the issues of public vs. private.

In my opinion, public is like going to a flea market; private is like going to a garage sale hosted by a upper class person.

  • A Nonny Mouse

Seems weird to passing on all the best kept secrets to the man here.

Some of my faves are listed, but some aren’t and I won’t mention them. But have to say – private any day if you value attention to detail, take pride in your tagging, want decent bit rates and make use of proper search systems.

Respect to TPB for their longevity, but I just can’t handle the shoddiness of what I’ve found there in the past.

And despite the rudimentary search, the ‘little green monster’ community will always have a place in my heart.

  • Anonymous

Not resricting my points to any particular “side” (Public or Private) but in my experience Public is for 99% of torrent users with bad connections & poor speeds & private sites are for the show off “I have a seedbox” types who’s Ratio & Speed comparisons remind of compensating for small genitalia.

I’m a member of lots of private sites but still use public trackers & TBH the edges between who gets things first is blurry. I’ve seen things appear on Public trackers within minutes of being available Privately.

The problem with Private sites is they can’t keep things alive & so you end up with an endless roundabout of the same stuff being re-upped regularly.

I Don’t have a seedbox but have very healthy ratio’s on all my sites.

It’s not about Size & Speed it’s about sharing.

I don’t particularly like piratebay but I do use it for older stuff, I used to like demonoid but I have to remind people it’s not private only semi private the tracker is still public. Demonoid has gone downhill since it came back because the community is now full of hit n runners & whingers.

Private sites only advantage was privacy but now even thats in jeopardy because of private sites greed, instead of keeping numbers down & flying under the radar they keep “dumping” for new members & opening themselves up for infiltration from the MAFIAA types.

I understand the need to grow but private sites rules are getting like the people we’re “fighting” against (MAFIAA) where you aren’t allowed to share with other sites (usually for a set period of time).

It just seems to me that the main “ideal” of file sharing is being overridden & forgotten in the pursuit of profit (Sound familiar!).

At the rate things are going there will become a subculture of underground sharing to fight against the sometimes archaic rules set by private sites.

Remember people it’s supposed to be about the sharing.

  • Ettore

I’ve used private trackers, and I have gone back to public. There’s definitely something to be said for ACTUALLY sharing, not just sharing with elitist douchebags.

Once these public trackers finally re-hash all torrents uploaded to them to create them as public (ie: without the privacy flag) the faster we can get away from needing trackers.
