From what I understand there was a requirement not was over turned not that long ago that only up to 64 bit encryption could be used publicly in the US/UK as anything higher was difficult to be force open by law enforcement.

For the UK I don’t believe there is anything that force developers of encryption software to have a ‘backdoor’ I could be wrong and if I am point me to the fact.

There is a law in the UK though that allows authorities to jail you for up to 5 years for not giving the pass key to an encrypted object.

As for super computer decrypting a password, that would still take a long time. Super computer would still have to use a brute force to open the file assuming it didn’t get lucky and land to the correct combination and will run typically at 1,000,000,000 passwords a second.

The best password are ones made of all character of the keyboard, Upper and lower case letters, number and non alphanumeric characters e.g % ~

As an example, and taking a password for all available key strokes an 8 digit password (e.g. Has$^39K) give out a 7.2 Quadrillion possible combination taking the super computer a little over 80 days to force.

If you want to give the super computer a run for its money, make the password long and use all characters.

Unless your disk is hosting some seriously bad stuff, the disk will most likely never see a super computer, you just aren’t that important

It really pisses me off to see police resources being tied up to protect the profits of the corporate elite. I wonder how much real crime could of been prevented if they were not being tied up with this BS.

why don’t they setup an encrypted partition on a server using Truecrypt and make it so every member has the password…you login, the partition opens…there you go, you logout, it closes.

...Or was that more than 50% of the top 500?

Anyway, the fastest one is like several million laptops of computing power.

So encryption that would take 60 years to crack with one computer may take only a month with the fastest supercomputer. (just a guess)

I'm sorry, but even the most robust encryption on a hard drive is pretty much useless.

The US has 50 of the top 100 supercomputers, including the fastest in the world, located in Virginia.

I don't think encrypting your data will help keep law enforcement out, only delay them. And not for long, I'm afraid.

Haxor, or anyone else...yeah but don't you have to use an ISP like AT&T or a cable provider to get the internet access so you log into the VPN with your own IP address and if they raid and find your login then what? Are you using a high speed proxy to login to the VPN ? I'm a noob at security and would like to learn...thanks

Hey, can someone please point out that they used "tb" instead of "Tb"? how are we supposed to have any idea what you're trying to convey when you don't capitalize the T? Honestly, do you really expect us to use common sense and extrapolate the usage you're going for? Nothing brings basement dwelling, condescending nerds out of the woodwork faster than someone being marginally incorrect on the Internet.

@74:

Interesting but.

"he first type of attack can be prevented as usual by good security practices, i.e. avoid running non-trusted executables with administrative privileges; the second one can be successfully neutralized—by the side of a user who suspect his/her encrypted hard disk might have been physically available to someone he/she doesn't trust—by booting the encrypted operating system with Truecrypt's Rescue Disk instead of booting it directly from the hard disk and restoring boot loader in MBR.[20]"

Shouldn't the police run after actual real criminals, you know, like the ones who make billions out of thin air?
Ah, no, they're too busy being low-paid whores for them!
Chasing dangerous "terrorists" and "gangsters" is... too dangerous... while jumping on the head of harmless "pirates" is so easy and they surely get an extra pay from the MAFIAA... When the king of Sweden gets exterminated, I'll believe in democracy in Sweden, for now Sweden is just another dictatorship...

And "cultural workers" are no workers at all, and they definitively don't deserve to get paid for making a bunch of noise.

Shouldn’t the police run after actual real criminals, you know, like the ones who make billions out of thin air?
Ah, no, they’re too busy being low-paid whores for them!
Chasing dangerous “terrorists” and “gangsters” is… too dangerous… while jumping on the head of harmless “pirates” is so easy and they surely get an extra pay from the MAFIAA… When the king of Sweden gets exterminated, I’ll believe in democracy in Sweden, for now Sweden is just another dictatorship…

And “cultural workers” are no workers at all, and they definitively don’t deserve to get paid for making a bunch of noise.

Lothor obviously failed to understand the clever 'ton bits' thing. The article incorrectly used "tb" - not TB.

I wish these guys would stop preventing people from seeing my work. I have already been paid for my contribution to a project long before it sees the light of day. They like to pretend they are defending me, but they are defending publishers and investors here. They don't protect the talent behind the works, but the peddlers and profiteers who's job is to short change the actual talent to keep themselves on the payroll.

Why don't they give honesty a shot...

“By extension, it means that the investors get an opportunity to get paid up to 10,000% of the amount they invested and we consumers have access to more overpriced culture production.”

Just noticed Torrent Freak got the abbreviation wrong.
"...130tb of both Swedish and foreign movies."
It depends on if you're talking about Terabytes (TB), or Terabits (Tb). Perhaps that is what #18 was referring to.

@18
Actually TB stands for Terabytes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terabyte
A terabyte (or Tbyte) is a SI-multiple (see prefix tera) of the unit byte for digital information storage and is equal to 1012 (1 trillion short scale) bytes. The unit symbol for the terabyte is TB.

Darkside SWE not Axxo DarksideRG.

Haxor is right and so is Oku.

This guys who was arested did not try hide their identities in online. So catch them was really easy and not suprise. Many thought this small group would be caught much earlier.

130 terabytes of material is small compare to medium or large size rlsgroups which host 300-500 terabytes (medium groups) and +600 terabytes (large groups) material.

Small fish of amateurs was catch.

They really should be going after P2P groups instead. I bet they have much greater penetration when it comes to the general public.

"[Wednesday's] police operation was yet another important step to stop organized piracy. This type of action has a direct and dramatic effect on the number of infringements,"

^ Yeah, removing a bucket of water from the ocean so totally has a dramatic effect, sure. lol
