I am a film school graduate, so I judge movies very harshly, but tries to keep an open mind. And district 9 definitely deserves IMDB's rating of 8.6. The film uses a documentary style to blend in the obvious fiction with reality, making it more believable. It also uses the historical reference of district 6 during the Apartheid, except now they replaced Africans with Aliens, and keeping the themes of racial discrimination, xenophobia, and racial tensions. It has great special effects, great acting, a very fresh and new idea that intelligently presses current issues. It may have taken some time to tell the story, but it was well worth it. This film is not made for the lowest common denominator who only enjoys movies with lots of explosions, simple plots, and catchy yet tacky one liners. (eg. Michal Bay) District 9 is an amazing movie.
