“Movies should be seen on big silver screens in theaters. End of story! Who am I to judge though, you pirates would probably watch CAM of Avatar and be satisfied. So pathetic…”

Who said movies “should” be watched in theatres. I suppose you saying then that DVD and Bluray viewers “shouldn’t” watch movies at home? A screen is a screen.

And FYI most people who download cams also download DVD or Bluray source encodes if they liked the movie.

Also you sound pathetic with your whining about how other people are choosing to watch movies – enjoy your cinema experience instead of worrying about how superior you are. You sound like you’ve attached part of your ego to this, you should get a girlfriend or make something of yourself, you’d be so much happier.

  • Elroo

There is no way anyone who watched any of these works at home has any idea of what they are talking about. Films must be seen on the big screen to really “get” them and anybody who thinks otherwise isn’t a true appreciator of cinema.

  • mouthbreather

As a cancer patient my ability to sit through long movies, such as Avatar, is limited at best. Being able to pause when needed is a wonderful thing.

Now that we’ve seen it and know the story (derivative though it is – see Fern Gully, Medicine Man, and countless others)my wife and I will go see it on the Big Screen for the visual Wows without my condition taking away from our following the plot thread.

  • Dude

    Holy crap my pants.
How does Zombieland get a 7.6?
It is the shittest movie i have seen for ages.
A 1 would be too generous.

  • Kirk

Yes, I would have to agree with #1 and #21. Films MUST be seen on the big screen. Otherwise you’re just doing it wrong.

  • Trelew

Now some of those movies I have gone to the theater to see, the rest not interested or will download to see if I will buy the DVD when it comes out. Also, as a general rule I will not download a movie that was taken from a vidcam in a theater.

  • Ninja

To all those cinema puritanical trolls: maybe people would rather watch at home with all the comfort cinemas fail to deliver. Or maybe pirates download to check before spending a lot on cinemas… Or maybe they downloaded the movies because they liked when they went to the cinema. Stop judging ppl without knowing the reasons behind the downloads.. It’s just what the imbeciles from MAFIAA and merry friends do.

As for the list, it pleases me to see the Lightning Thief is not there. Usually I’d check before going to the cinema but since I went with a bunch of friends I just had to go for it without checking first. MAJOR disappointment. At least that Alexandra something (Annabeth) is hawt… But they killed the plot…

Please MAFIAA, my money back for that horrible experience. No?

  • MAFIAA

No. We got your money and there’s nothing you can do to get it back. HAR HAR.

  • Kirk

LMAO at #26 (Ninja). Seriously, I cannot stop laughing at his weak attempt to be a smartass.

How dumb you have to be request your money back if you actually saw the film? That’s what trailers and reviews are for. If you can’t make up your mind whether or not to go to a particular title, then you’re pathetic. So pathetic that want your money back. Plus, it’s what, 10 bucks? LMAO! Cheap ungrateful bastard.

  • OJ

A movie is a movie and a plot is a plot whether you see it in the best possible conditions first or later. I personally watched a cam version of Avatar because I was able to see it before going to the theater. A couple weeks later I went to the 3D IMAX with friends at my convenience. It all boils down to personal preference.

Quit saying you MUST this and you MUST that you ignorant scrubs. ^^
There are actually some people who dislike the big screen with the strong smell of popcorn, rustling of paper bags, whispering, cell phones, and idiots bumping the back of your chair throughout the movie.

  • Xerxes

“*Cough*torrentfreak*cough* make a top 10 for indie and free films. >.>”

Why make a Top 10 for a bunch of films that weren’t good enough to get a major deal or that any large amount of people watched?

They are indie and free for a reason – they’re either crud as they have been made by film students or directors with no hope of making a good film … or they are made free by liars and mad people, eg. Alex Jones and Zeitgeist etc.

No one would fund or distribute films such as these as they are made for people who enjoy the “drama” of the idea of a conspiracy theory and who refuse to do any fact checking with uninterested sources IE a small part of the population that is mentally ill in other words.

  • Kirk

    LMAO at #33.

Dude, you might wanna get your brains checked. There are loads of independent movies – Paranormal Activity or Hurt Locker, just to name a few. You sound so ignorant it’s almost shameful to read your comment.

  • SirReal

Its so much fun when the trolls come out to play! And #31, I don’t believe that you understand a concept called sarcasm, http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Sarcasm there you go. The MAFIAA should stop telling us how we are to view our media, and I quote #1 “Movies should be seen on big silver screens in theaters. End of story!” That sort of attitude is sometimes what drives people to piracy, they can pay for content, but not get to enjoy it the way they like, or they can not pay, and enjoy it any way they like. That’s also a big argument against DRM. Sorry trolls, I fear you are the pathetic ones here.

  • Good Vibrations

Boycotting barely scratches the surface as to why some people don’t go to the theater. For example:

    - I can watch a movie at any time of my choosing, morning, noon, and night.

    - Ticket cost per person is way too high for the larger family when compared to DVD/Bluray. Don’t need a babysitter either.

    - On demand download/streaming doesn’t require any driving, which uses costly fuel and pollutes the environment uneccesarily.

    - No scraping ice and snow off the car in winter and no need to warm it up (twice). Can’t plug in the block heater at the theater when it’s really cold out.

    - I find my 52″ 1080/24p television often rivals the theater in terms of clarity and sharpness. Viewing size is dependent on distance, so TV is as relatively large as a theater screen is.

    - Along those same lines, I’ve noticed some theaters don’t seem to care when their screen is dirty or if it has holes in it. Even tiny ones can be very distracting.

    - My 7.1 audio system sounds every bit as good as the theaters, plus I get to control the volume and EQ.

    - No long lines to stand and wait in.

    - Never have to worry about getting the best seat in the house. Good luck if you’re not at the theater early enough. If you are, enjoy the long wait until the movie begins.

    - I can pause the movie any time I like, allowing me to grab a drink/snack/blanket as well as go to the bathroom. No limits on choice of drink/snack either.

    - Speaking of the bathroom, public ones always suck. Why must the guy at the urinal next to mine always look at my package? Perv.

    - I can also rewind the movie. This is especially useful if I missed or misunderstood some dialog or didn’t read a subtitle fast enough.

    - No bright, annoying cell phones ringing during the movie. No annoying people answering them either.

    - No annoying kids screaming, crying, running amok and generally misbehaving.

    - No misbehaving adults either. Talkative chatterboxes and fidgety seat kickers are the worst!

    - Don’t have to have x-ray vision in order to see through the head of the person sitting in front of me.

    - No sticky floors and chewed bubble gum. Even better, no sticky seats (ugh).

    - Don’t have to share arm rests with complete strangers. Don’t have to share them with friends either (muahahah!).

    - Don’t have to worry about potentially contagious people sitting in super close proximity to you (ah-choo!).

    - Don’t have to pay for super expensive concession stand items (whose hot dog I ate nearly killed me, mmm… bacteria).

    - No annoying ushers coming and going constantly while the movie is playing.

    - Never have to stand up during the movie to let someone out. No standing up to let them get back to their seat either.

    - I can skip all the advertisements.

    - Staying home means I’m never subjected to being searched or otherwise being treated like I’m a criminal in general.

    - Don’t have to hold farts in, nor be subjected to the farts (and other odors) of those less considerate.

    - Probably the number one reason to watch a movie at home instead of the theater… I can do it while completely NAKED. Woohoo! :-)

  • Right…

“- I find my 52? 1080/24p television often rivals the theater in terms of clarity and sharpness. Viewing size is dependent on distance, so TV is as relatively large as a theater screen is.”

You have no idea of how to evaluate quality of video, maybe you simply have trouble remembering what cinema looks like to compare or your eyes are fairly bad in that case because no one else seems to think that. Because that is impossible.

You do realise that cinema is roughly the equivalent of 4000p I suppose. And that higher definition standards are already largely defined

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UHDTV

By your own statements you appear to be saying that there is nowhere to go in terms of quality compared to cinema so why bother. Really…

I saw the Super Hi-Vision demo at CES … you’ll have to trust me, it is mindblowing and 1080p simply pales in comparison – it looks pitiful. What was nice is that they showed relatively mundane scenes including just a bonnet mounted camera on a car for example, not spectacular scenes by any means and for all intents and purposes it looked real like you could touch it.

Also you cannot achieve relative size with a 52″ TV. You may start to approach relative size of even the smallest cinema screens with 200″ projectors but even these cannot get even close to large cinema screens or IMAX.

I’d agree with your other points though.

  • LOL

    ^^ What he said.

“My 7.1 audio system sounds every bit as good as the theaters, plus I get to control the volume and EQ.”

No it does not… going on your assessment of your TV I doubt you have many multiples of speakers for each channel, reverb reducing material, timings, volume adjusted for placement and so on. In fact I doubt whether you’re even savvy enough to adjust the greyscale but anyhow.

There is currently no low end consumer system that approaches cinema sound. 10.2, if it gets going into homes may start to approach the level of cinema. May. How do I know you have a low end consumer sound system – the size of your TV is low end consumer..

And have you heard of that thing called THX certification? It means you don’t have to “play with the EQ”.

Seriously, enjoy your home theatre but really stop making these ridiculous claims that no home theatre expert will make as they simply are not possible at present.

  • Aime3

@7 Well unfortunately you are right on some aspects, but wrong on others. Not everything on emule is slow. The top 10 movies are usually very fast (many sharers/etc) , it has rare content, and files last longer it seems than some torrent files.

  • Eyeties

Files last longer – that’s an understatment. Many files on the ed2k network are well over 10 years old. Not the content, the originally uploaded file is still there I mean. It has a very dedicated bunch of users that are hardcore in the amount of content they keep up.

  • Consolation Prize

Just so the MPAA doesn’t feel too bad, some of us who download actually go & see the movie & pay money (try before you buy–in some cases multiple tickets). Just don’t get hooked on the idea.. we still vote with our wallets. That said, there are segments of the scene & internet community you will never get in to pay your first run rates so, might as well accept that as given.

  • sleek

we “pirates” do it for the lolz mostly LOL

  • Rob

I download movies because in my little island I live on our cinema sux as its the size of my lounge they use old equipment and ban yes BAN some films because and I quote “they are too violent”. So yeah i would rather download than go to the cinema the tickets here are the same price as everywhere else but it sux! It all depends on YOUR LOCAL CINEMA as to if your TV is better as yes mine is better picture and sound quality than what I have access too. So shut up you know it all morons! As actually your level of intellect doesn’t even rival that of my cat or you would have worked this out for yourselves

  • LOL @ 45

Guys, seriously, please stop fooling yourself. Your TV and sound system don’t really compare to cinema quality. So stfu!

I have 50 inch Pioneer plasma with 7.1 audio system. And yes, I still go to theater on regular basis. Do you know why? Because quality is so much superior even to my sexy home setup.

  • Eyeties

Wow Rob you must live in a pretty backwards place with that non-existant cinema that is worse than 1080p. Or you are deluding yourself about it. Wouldn’t be surprising considering your deluding yourself about how smart you are.

  • Good Vibrations

My local theater (we only have one) was awesome when it was first built. After only three years its age was definitely starting to show. I probably should have mentioned that in my original post. I have no doubt many of you live in far more civilized areas and have magnificent theaters that are well maintained. Though I do live in a city, we only just got our first (and only) Starbucks coffee shop less that two years ago. That should give you some idea. ;-)

A given film stock itself may indeed be able to resolve upwards of 4000p provided it’s been used correctly, but after traveling through a lens of questionable cleanliness and build quality (more than once), followed by dusty air onto a screen of questionable quality, all while using a lamp that is much too dim for the distance the image is being thrown, a good consumer television of proper size and viewing distance can easily begin to look better. If not better, then certainly equal at the very least. Remember, they are always getting better too. Eventually 4000p 3D will be as commonplace at home as it is at the theater and the tech shows. At some point you’re inevitably going to run into the limits of what a healthy human eye can resolve and moving beyond that won’t make much sense (just ask a seasoned photographer who prints their work for viewing), except maybe for the marketers whose job it is to make you think you’re actually getting something for that extra cash premium you just paid lol.

As for sound, I plan on upgrading to 9.2 once I move into the house the wife and I are buying. I’m actually in an apartment right now and am greatly limited by that fact (no pets allowed either, super depressing). Right now I’m looking at perhaps a couple of cylinder SVS subs for the LFE. With the extra space I’m considering switching to a projector, which is what I originally wanted but didn’t have room for. The big thing about home sound versus the theater is the massive difference in space between them. A theater truly needs all that very expensive high powered gear, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to properly fill a large theater with the cutting edge surround sound we all know and love. The more people seated, the more sound that gets absorbed too. I’ve found the dampening effect to be quite noticeable. A sound system for the home may not cost as much, but that doesn’t automatically mean it’s bad in some way. A lot of people (younger guys especially) often make that old mistake of thinking price is the only measuring stick that counts when considering quality. The home space is a thousand times smaller and doesn’t need expensive cutting edge super powered equipment in order to sound fantastic and every bit as good as what you hear at the theater. On the flip side there is a minimum requirement too though, and there are plenty of low end all-in-one packages out there, the kind of stuff favored by the average family on a budget. User error and mismatching equipment doesn’t help either. If this is all you have ever experienced, then you haven’t seen what a home theater experience can truly be like. There simply is no excuse as to why one cannot achieve at home what can be achieved at the theater. It’s only a matter of scale.

I suppose I could have been more fair and listed the reasons in favor of going to my local theater, which I loved doing while growing up. They have excellent air conditioning. This is a godsend in summer, though that is about to be negated by central air in the house I’m buying. A laughing audience can certainly improve a comedy flick. I’d rather watch other genres alone though as I can’t stand any distractions whatsoever. Suspension of disbelief is everything. I can’t really think of anything else, or at least nothing I couldn’t also get at home. If the Hollywood suits really want me to go to the theater, they are going to have to stop producing DVD and Bluray discs altogether. Good luck with that.

“And have you heard of that thing called THX certification? It means you don’t have to “play with the EQ”.”

Oh, you mean that marketing scheme designed to fleece fools by making them believe the only good gear is the more expensive stuff sporting a THX logo on it? You know, like how an optical cable made by Monster Cable is somehow superior because it costs more? LOL! Yes, I know all about THX certification. If you’re saying quality matters, I agree. If you’re saying THX certification is the only way to achieve it, I don’t agree. I own a sound meter and spent a great deal of time making sure everything was as close to reference as I could make it. This is what I meant when I said I can control the volume and EQ. Despite what you might think, not all theaters get this right from my experience (I’m 38 and was raised on cinema fwiw). I also used software to do careful frequency analysis. In fact that is how I found a great big mid to low frequency null spot at the seated viewing position and was able to mitigate it. Now that I’m moving to a house and can make much desired improvements to my setup, I plan on getting a technician in to not only help with sound setup, but also the video (despite owning a colorimeter, I still find color setup to be much harder than sound). The technician I speak of would be my uncle. He has worked in the A/V technical field for over forty years and has been doing home theater installs as part of his primary business for the past nine.

    Thanks for the laugh! 8^D

  • Mark

I can’t disagree more with those who say that they can’t stand sound of other people laughter, popcorn etc during the film in a theater.

There’s a great way to overcome it. How? Just go before noon, you complaining bastards! I always go to cinema at 11am. Perfect time to sit and enjoy film in peaceful and comfortable environment.

  • What’s his name

    Rural Consumers:
If you live off the East-West coasts, you often live in a small town with an older theater where they show family friendly G, PG and PG-13 movies. As a result, no 3D, R, Indie or foreign films are screened.

In addition, the local video store is little larger than a walk-in closet. So, after stocking older blockbusters and TV shows, the remaining space is reserved for big budget films.

Netflix has helped. However, the long queue for recently released DVDs results in films leaving the collective consciousness before being available.

I realize there’s a price to be paid for living in rural America. However, the industry has the tools available (as demonstrated by Hulu, Netflix streaming, iTunes, etc.) to distribute digital content more efficiently.

This leaves no option but to download.

I download little I would pay to see. I’ve seen Inglourious Basterds, Avatar 3D, The Hangover, etc. in theaters while visiting larger cities. I’ve also downloaded them to show friends in our small town. Lost revenue to the industry is overstated by assuming moviegoers could or would pay to see everything downloaded. I downloaded The White Ribbon recently since it was nominated for an Academy Award but would not (and could not) pay to see it.

Question 1: Why do studios not release movies on a pay-per-download basis (similar to iTunes) concurrent with theatrical release? Answer, they make more money not doing so. This is a reasonable business decision. However, would anyone wait three to six months to download the latest new song?

Question 2: When DVDs became a major new source of revenue, did theater ticket prices drop? If so, I don’t recall. It appears copyright holders, distributors and others in the production and supply chain just soaked up the additional. I can’t blame them. It’s the American way.

Given geographic locations, Q1 and Q2, it’s hard to feel wrong or sympathetic when downloading.

Feel free to hammer me. I’m unlikely to return to this page. I enjoy movies, thank the industry for all it does and wish it well.

  • Rob

    @46
Did you actually read what I put before responding? Its clear that you are the fool you even use crappy text abbreviations for your name for people who can’t spell. MY LOCAL CINEMA IS CRAP Its in a hotel for god sake but of course being your intellect is so superior you already knew that…. moron!

  • Winner

Pirates pirate movies, because they’re simply smarter than everyone else. The average hardcore pirate probably saves $50,000 in a duration of 10 years. This is assuming that a song is worth $1, movie ticket $10, DVD $20, and video game $50. Not to mention software for school, or even eBooks.

Just think about it. While anti-pirates are struggling with their fastfood job because they couldn’t afford a good education — Pirates are living the life of college with all the money they saved, and will soon profit either further from it.

If someone offered you $50,000, would you accept it?

  • Glenn

“A given film stock itself may indeed be able to resolve upwards of 4000p provided it’s been used correctly, but after traveling through a lens of questionable cleanliness and build quality (more than once), followed by dusty air onto a screen of questionable quality, all while using a lamp that is much too dim for the distance the image is being thrown, a good consumer television of proper size and viewing distance can easily begin to look better.”

Except that cinemas clean their lenses, use high quality well produced lenses, match the lamp power to the auditorium being used. Give up, don’t you find it odd that no home theatre experts concur that any low end home screens are better than cinema?

“As for sound, I plan on upgrading to 9.2 once I move into the house the wife and I are buying.”

Good luck with that, sounds awesome – wait, a standard for 9.2 channel surround sound doesn’t exist, what are you even talking about?

Oh and here’s some infoz abhout THX certs:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/THX

Seeing as you’re living in an apartment I somehow find it hard to believe that you have the resources to afford the equipment, baffles, dampening surfaces or in fact the space for cinema psycho-accoustics to be realised.

Have fun with that 9.2 channel sound system though, sounds great even if it doesn’t exist. Oh wait, now you going to tell us that you’re custom building your own setup even though there is no media to play on it LOL.

  • Winner

You can read wikipedia. Good job. The fact is, according to aspect ratio (where you’re sitting, and where the screen you’re watching is located.) 1080p TV sets offer better VISUAL definition. Unless your couch is right in front of your TV, or too far back.

The same can go for home sound systems. In a theater, you’re approximately 30 feet away from the closest speeker, where in a home stereo setup you’re roughly 5 feet away. Which will be more clear? Does a headphone set sound better than sticking a speaker against your ear?

Exagerate all you want, and throw what he said out of context by reading through wikipedia. The fact remains that movies are always better at home. The only advantage of a theater visit, is being able to see a HI-Def uncammed version of a movie 6 months early.

Ask yourself this. Why do you think they don’t release a DVD at the same time as a theater showing of a movie? Because they would lose a ton in the box office.

I think it is pretty obvious that Glenn is either being deliberately dense or honestly doesn’t know what he is talking about. My guess is that it’s probably a little bit of both.

Perhaps this will help him out:

Make sure to check out the Theater Gallery while you’re there. Should give folks an idea of what a true movie enthusiast can do provided they have the means.

    @cando22

Wow. Here is a brilliantly simple concept; if you don’t like a post, don’t read it. An opinion as to why the theater sucks seems perfectly reasonable given the nature of this site, the people that frequent it, the article it was posted under, and the comments the preceded it. That makes it on topic and relevant in my book, even if it was a bit on the long winded side.
