Top Music Stars Ask UK Prime Minister For Anti-Piracy Action

Some of the biggest names in the UK music industry have written to Prime Minister David Cameron in the hope that he can do something about illicit music downloading.

Simon Cowell, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Brian May and Andrew Lloyd Webber are among several mega-rich celebrity figures asking the government to pressure Internet service providers, search engines and advertisers into solving the music industry’s problems.

Although not detailed specifically in the letter, the industry wants ISPs to block sites and help towards punishing file-sharers, advertisers to pull away from ‘infringing sites’, and search engines to delist unauthorized sources of online music.

Here’s the letter in full:

———————-

Dear Prime Minister,

As the world’s focus turns to the UK this summer, there is an opportunity to stimulate growth in sectors where the UK has a competitive edge. Our creative industries represent one such sector, which creates jobs at twice the speed of the rest of the economy.

Britain’s share of the global music market is higher than ever with UK artists, led by Adele, breaking through to global stardom. As a digitally advanced nation whose language is spoken around the world, the UK is well positioned to increase its exports in the digital age. Competition in the creative sector is in talent and innovation, not labour costs or raw materials.

We can realise this potential only if we have a strong domestic copyright framework, so that UK creative industries can earn a fair return on their huge investments creating original content. Illegal activity online must be pushed to the margins. This will benefit consumers, giving confidence they are buying safely online from legal websites.

The simplest way to ensure this would be to implement swiftly the long overdue measures in the Digital Economy Act 2010; and to ensure broadband providers, search engines and online advertisers play their part in protecting consumers and creators from illegal sites.

We are proud of our cultural heritage and believe that we and our sector can play a much bigger role in supporting UK growth. To continue to create world beating creative content, we need a little bit of help from our friends.

Yours sincerely,

Simon Cowell
Roger Daltrey CBE
Professor Green
Sir Elton John CBE
The Lord Lloyd Webber
Dr Brian May CBE
Robert Plant
Roger Taylor
Tinie Tempah
Pete Townshend

They surely DONT KNOW A SHIT about how internet is working ! Fucking assholes !!!

    • FrostyC

They don’t understand what music is anymore. They are blinded by dollars and that is why they are all a bunch of washed up has-beens.

      Simon Cowell – Always sucked
      Roger Daltrey CBE – wHO?
      Professor Green – Who?
Sir Elton John CBE – Nobody cares unless he does another song with Eminem
The Lord Lloyd Webber – Who?
Dr Brian May CBE - Freddie is rolling in his grave, cursing you Brian.
Robert Plant – Zeppelin hasn’t done shit for years, otherwise Rob is washed up
      Roger Taylor - Who?
      Tinie Tempah - Who?
Pete Townshend - Who—wait a minute…lol Money grubbers are tainted, you live a lie now pete.

      • wes227

Check out how rich most of those folks are. Why the hell are they complaining?

        • John Spartan

because its too hard to choose between
the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and the Aston Martin 177.so why not just get both? Not like they actually have to work for it

        • Pissed @ Whiny Rich Fools

This reminds me of a famous Charlie Sheen line from the movie Wall Street where he says to Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) “How many yachts can you water-ski behind?  When is it enough?”

All these artists are rich beyond our wildest dreams.  This is pure GREED, plain and simple

        • Thepatient613

That was my point too. Oh well. The more these guys do that kind of shit, the more fans they lose and the closer we are to having a general public that supports real music so fuck em all.

      • Pissed @ Whiny Rich Fools

Thanks for reminding me.  My newest download list is ALL discography’s of:

        -The Who
        -Led Zeppelin
        -Queen
        -Phantom OF The Opera
        -Elton John
        -All American Idol Finalists

AND SEED THE CRAP OUTTA THEM!  Thanks mega-rich fool’s for the reminder!!

        • I

But then, if you believe file-sharing is a good promotional tool (a popular argument), then why the fuck would you do that?  To give them more money?

        • Think, people!

That’s helping THEIR cause, not ours! By pirating these artists’ albums – and I use the term artist loosely – you’re promoting them instead of showing them just how clueless and irrelevant they are in this day and age. Honestly, do you WANT American Idol to be on the Top10 list on Pirate Bay? If you want to help, then stay away from each and every one of the artists you listed as well as from the ones from the article. What they need is oblivion.

      • Mwhahaha

        Good who punning!

      • Anyone

you know Brian May but not Roger Taylor?
        shame on you! ;)

        • IvAnn

Well, it could be the other Roger Taylor from Duran Duran, but that would be kinda weird and out of place.

      • Decimus

Ha, your list is basically exactly my thoughts on all those names.  While I’m sure it’d be awesome to please these bitches, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.  We say that we need freedom to share art, in the same manner that you can look for a work of art on Google and find the image for free.  These guys say that they need more laws to prevent this from happening, even though most of them haven’t been active in 20 years.

      • Blackbeard

So you recognise Townshend and May but not Daltrey or Taylor? Interesting seeing as they were in the same group (The Who and Queen).

      • guest

Simon Cowell – I’ll disagree with him to disagree with him. Also, he’s a douchebag to everyone anyways, ad hominem and such.
Roger Daltrey CBE – Who indeed.
Professor Green – Who in-deed. Is he even a professor? Wait, don’t answer, it’s like Dr. Dre, right?
Sir Elton John CBE – I like his music, but seriously, make more of it instead of milking your past success.
Tinie Tempah – I always confuse him with Dizzee.

  • Maxxori

Maybe its time to give them a little boycotting to make them realize they work for their users, not the other way around.

You guys have NO right to lobby for any action. Get your studios to fix their shitty systems first.

    • Hogspace

I started boycotting them years ago. I no longer buy their products or go to their cinemas. What a bunch of evil rich old shysters.
Making and distributing music is now almost free. Get the Record Labels and the scum like cowell out of my face.
If your music is good I’ll listen to it online. If it’s really good I’ll purchase a high quality recording or CD to play back through my hi-fi.

Same here!!  I aint buying their shit either :<
The problem is we "content consumers" often don't have a choice coz if we listen to radio, etc they still get paid – even if we mute the radio station or change to a different one.  So much for "consumer choice" huh?

But who the feck is Prof Green and Tinie Tempah?  At least I'd actually heard of these other dinosaurs, lol.

      • Anyone

I know Tinie Tempah from “Never Mind the Buzzcocks”
can’t say I listen to his music

and sad to see Queen up there :/

        • McCheezits

As someone remarked earlier, Freddie’s rolling in his grave, cursing May.

      • chillinfart

Add the region blocking to the list. Content from some british groups like Depeche Mode cannot be obtained legally here because their labels (EMI/Warner) don’t want to offer it (i’m in peru, South America).

        • McCheezits

I’m guessing you pirate Depeche Mode then? I’m okay with this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Don-Dilly/1624894683 Don Dilly

Its a long list of has beens.
none of them have released anything half decent in decades if ever.
None are of real interest to the current young generation and most are drawing their old age pensions.

The fan base if you would call it that , are now in their 40s and 50s+, not exactly the age group renowned for their tech savvy or filesharing and they have over time bought the same albums 2 or 3 times on different formats.

As for cowle, he is responsible for here today gone tomorrow ephemeral crap that gets floggedto death on the radio for months prior to release to the point where once it can be bought kids are already sick of it and moved on to something else.

      • blah

Anything that Simon Cowell gets his hands on turns into soulless, money-grabbing pap.

    • Zan

Ya know what, now i dont want to stream any of these artists on spotify now.

ive already bought most Queen albums on vinyl, just how much money IS ENOUGH Brian!

  • http://twitter.com/ArmEagle ArmEagle

Sure, sirs. As if with such changes there is suddenly more money around and people can spend that extra money on your digital goods. Money spend on entertainment, with a huge markup on value is not money spend on goods where more money stays in the hands of the small man.

  • James

  • http://twitter.com/devinprater La devin.preitr

When will they learn! Ugh! If they try to destroy piracy it’ll just go underground and grow even more, LOL.

  • danielrobertsg

Simon Cowell is rich enough as it is , if he’s making such a fuss over such a petty issue to gain more money then that shows him for what he is. He does not care about music, or the love of it or the fact that music is for peoples enjoyment, He simply wants to latch himself on to it and make as much money as humanly possible.

    • Spencer greff

I phink someone else may have been involved… Some one that perhaps wants to sway popular opinion with popular artists(in perspective)?

      • IvAnn

I don’t know… It might offend somebody.  They might have to put up a poll first.

  • Are they dumb>?

Professor Green and Tinnie Tempah alone became famous from the internet, and of course people spreading there music via downloading. Lets face it, there type of “Music” EG: Grime, funky etc. was made by people who spread it around, wether its mobile, on the internet or copied CD’s (Oh the days..)   it all got shared illegally nevertheless  and has made them very famous and rich people.. Now there asking to stop “illegal downloading” but lets face it.. It made them who they are today.

    • Guest

      their type of music
      they’re asking

  • tiger97a

they want more cars and longer vacations and you to fawn up to them–yes boycott them and make them feel it where they know it in their pocket book and then the business plan will change, use seed boxes things like that and if you have a spare 6.00 a month try this one http://www.secureboxes.net and make them cry.

  • http://torrentfreak.com/ Rob8urcakes

    Dear PM,
I’d like to be a multi-millionaire along with those signatories who plea for an end to our digital culture in the UK, but I’ve never had that cut-throat attitude needed to by-pass our fellow humans simply because they’re in poverty or prefer to sample cultural works prior to parting with their cash.

I believe these signatories would prefer to live in a Stalinist régime in which the State authorities have the ultimate power to dictate to people what media content they can access, and when they can access it – assuming they can pay for such access first of all.

I therefore advise you and your government’s cabinet review the sections of the despised Digital Economy Act and apply a more Stalinist approach to better facilitate digital content in the UK so that our poor multi-millionaires can make more money from the general public.

You may also have to increase Police and troop numbers at home too my tovarishch PM.

    Sincerely yours,

    The Internet xx

    PS
Would it not make more sense to ensure all UK people have a job and a regular wage rather than a false right of entitlement to be continually paid for the same tune over and over again?

  • Anon99

    Elton Johns Net worth = US$ 309 million (2011)
Brian Mays Net worth = UK £ 85 million (2011)
Roger Daltrys Net worth = $65 Million
Andrew Lloyd Webber = Around UK £1 BIllion
    Simon Cowell = US$ 331 million (2011)

I liked it until the third paragraph. The rest should read:

We can realise this potential only if we embrace the Internet and new technologies, so that UK creative artists can earn a fair income on their minimal investments creating original content. Illegal activity online must be pushed to the margins as superior music distribution systems are developed. This will benefit consumers, giving confidence they are buying safely online direct from the artists. .

      Yes. Maybe the jobs are:

    Dear Prime Minister,

Several decades ago, I was a popular musician and it made me very rich. I haven’t worked in a long time but I still think I deserve to be paid vast sums every single year. There may be no independent scientific evidence that piracy decreases sales, but I’m becoming paranoid in my old age. Please ensure that I can continue my luxurious lifestyle – and if you do, I’ll consider donating (even more) to your political party.

‘ Simon Cowell, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, Brian May and Andrew Lloyd
Webber are among several mega-rich celebrity figures asking the
government to pressure Internet service providers, search engines and
advertisers into solving the music industry’s problems.’

seems strange that these and others, who are already mega rich and were themselves only too pleased to see countless bootleg tapes being sold when they were trying to make a ‘musical’ name for themselves, would be signing a bull shit letter like this. they have forgotten how their own careers started and were progressed due to ‘piracy’, but then, that was a different story. they needed to become famous and weren’t bothered what happened to get them that fame. how the worm turns, eh? the worrying thing is, Cameron and that other fucking moron, Vaizey, would rather take notice of a half dozen tax-avoiding fuckers like these, that do most of their living in the US or elsewhere, than the millions of UK citizens that will be criminalized because of a plastic disc with sound on. unbelievable. about time the Danish (i believe) perspective was introduced whereby the ‘labels’ and artists actually had to offer sensible alternatives for their money instead of having governments make new laws that just handed them money for nothing!

  • Viciouzex

Let’s punish users, so they can buy our music. LOL If I get punished by Elton John, I will never buy his music. Spotify works wonders. I pay for the premium because of how convenient it is. But it does not have everything, so downloading it from other sources seems logical. If Spotify had every song I would not download music anymore from dump sites. Plain and simple.

    • Mwhahaha

Why would you buy Elton John’s music anyway, he’s not been relevant for about 35 years now. How he continues to be in the public eye at all baffles me.

      • http://twitter.com/7daykatie katie anderson

He continues to be in the public eye because of his sometimes flamboyent use of the huge amounts of wealth he has already been rewarded for his contributions to music, and the influence that wealth achieves for him.

I would mind all that a great deal less if he was not using that influence to try to expand the privileges of copymonopoly to the detriment of everyone else’s rights and convenience.

        Greedy little git.

Yeah, it looks like a list mostly comprised of a bunch of has beens.

It’s been how long since Elton was a pop-chart rocketman?  And how much longer since he released anything worth hearing?  I guess that’s why they call it the blues.  He’s fallen off the yellow brick road but any night’s the night to get some action in fighting these IP maximalists.  All these honkey cats need to get back.  They all think they are gold in a silver mine but we’re still standing.

I stopped reading at “creative industries”.

  • Libel Man

Wow, this letter really impresses, what with all its commanders, lords, professors, and doctors!

Simon Cowell – Oh, wait. This guy is Britain’s most unlikable exported media personality. Well, at least until Piers Morgan douche-canoed across the Atlantic. But still, a star player in the World Cup of Twattery. The level of smugness exuded by his flat-top hairstyle alone is epic.

Roger Daltrey CBE – Meet the new corporate whore, same as the old corporate whores. A couple of years ago I spotted him as a presenter in a 30-minute TV advertisement for a Time-Life Music classic rock collection. So shameless was that whoring that I almost wept. But no, I laughed instead.

Professor Green – I don’t know who this is but his name is certainly pretentious enough to be listed with the other blowhards using titles here.

Sir Elton John CBE – Remains the biggest diva/bitch in pop music, so naturally he had to get around to bitching about file sharing sooner or later.

The Lord Lloyd Webber – The least talented yet still widely celebrated “classical” composer alive today; basically the Madonna of the classical music world.

Dr. Brian May CBE – In a perverse way I admire him here for daring to use both Dr. and CBE, thereby winning the dick-swinging contest in the list of signatories. At least he’s staying true to image, because Queen was always pompous. Sadly, his approval of this letter is proof that one can have true talent and high intelligence and still be suckered into supporting an obsolete business model.

Robert Plant – “Baaaaaby, baaaaaby, yeeeeahhh, no noo nooo, baaaaa… ah shit, I ran out of lyrics decades ago. Guess I should find a new way to annoy my fans.”

Roger Taylor – Duran Duran finally took him back and he’s making a fuck-ton of money on the reunion tour. Since he seems to be considered a has-been even by his has-been band, maybe he shouldn’t be pushing his luck with the fans.

Tinie Tempah – I don’t know who this is, but I’m sure his name lends much gravitas and prestige to this letter.

Pete Townshend – No-one knows what it’s like to be the bad man, busted for browsing a pedophilia website. Maybe you fooled the authorities, but the public still doesn’t buy that weak alibi, Pete.

    • Pissed @ Whiny Rich Fools

I think it’s Roger Taylor from Queen, not Duran Duran.  Otherwise, you are spot on everything you say.

Tinie Tempah was discovered on the net, via YouTube I think, now he’s famous(ish) he’s condeming it.

I’ve got to admit I’m a bit of a Paul McCartney fan. Relieved that he refused to sign this letter (that is, his pals on the list must have asked Sir Paul MBE to co-sign).

  • Dy

Knowing how young people get their music and considering the areas and the culture professor green and tinie tempah grew up in I can safely say they have both broken copyright law! Fucking hypocrites!

My big issue with this is that these big names are going to be listened to, because they’ve already made it – because they already have the money.  In turn, they are going to squash out many avenues that the new, upcoming artists use to get recognition.  This is deplorable.

  • OccamsKatana

There are 10 (TEN) names on that list. Why the hell doesn’t Mr Prime Minister, or Mr President, or anyone in power listen to the THOUSANDS, dare I say, MILLIONS of names on petitions around the world screaming for change!  These 10 names think they should be heard first?

Occupy Wall Street?   Occupy HOLLYWOOD!!!  Occupy the studios. Civil disruption.
