The place where breaking news, BitTorrent and copyright collide

TorrentFreak’s Top File-Sharing News Articles of 2012

The year is almost over so we’re going to spend its final few hours looking back at the biggest news events in the file-sharing world during 2012. Which TorrentFreak articles were read the most, which received the most comments, and what were the biggest file-sharing news stories of the year?

The past year has been an eventful one, starting with the historic SOPA and PIPA protests that carried over from 2011.

Eventually both bills were defeated.

Then there was the Megaupload raid and the indictment against the “Mega Conspiracy” which dominated the news the entire year and disrupted the file-hosting business.

There were also winners in 2012, such as the ACTA protesters, Rojadirecta and thousands of alleged BitTorrent users who had their cases dismissed.

And there were those who “lost” or received bad news, such as Gottfrid Svartholm, the Ninjavideo team, the IMAGiNE release group, Demonoid, BTjunkie, NZBMatrix and others.

The Pirate Bay made dozens of headlines as well, some good and some bad. The infamous BitTorrent site ditched torrents and moved to the cloud to escape getting raided, and enjoyed a huge increase in traffic despite increased censorship worldwide.

At TorrentFreak we carefully select the stories we write, and all these articles are important to us. But, to make some kind of an objective ranking of the top stories we compiled a list of the Top 12 most-read and the most-commented upon news articles.

Of course we would love to hear which stories and events were most important to our readers so feel free to join the discussion.

And a Happy New Year to all of you all! We really appreciate your ongoing support and encouragement.

the raid on the 9 year old girl still pisses me off when i think about it. at least disneys name was dragged into the shitfest, that’s one good thing to come out of it. what i got, as a side note was: all children should have disney characters on thier pc’s so if you get raided by the copywhorepolice, disney (huge arsed corp) get thier name dragged into the mire for not being child friendly.

you have to love that guilty by association thing.

i see you and after you walk buy i put a firecracker in your pants and run

      • Peace

Don’t (and no) hate, but I knew the case of that little girl wouldn’t make
any difference, now what happened with Megaupload was a big twist in history.

i’ve never read thier technology news. i should start doing that tomorrow seeing as its the start of the new year.

    • chronoss

ya like really i think we all need ot buy firecrackers and start tossing them when ever were near and actor or musician
just a nice reminder that we the people are the ones really in charge….

hehe when i can buy quarter sticks a dynamite in canada with no law around to pester me …i know i’m free.

      • Yong

that seems a bit douchey. Particularly as it’s not usually actual artists that are the trouble but the grey talentless middlemen. Artists with talent do fine without copyright in the modern era. Legacy recording industry bureaucrats who exist merely to administer an economically plain idiotic (see boldrin&levine etc.) monopoly on copying, not so much.

Have they ever considered how much pirates COULD hurt them if they push them too hard? No. They think they have it sewn up now they have the governments in there pockets.

      How about this then:

A small band of pirates in every city each produce ten discs – cost? negligible.
On those discs are 6 blockbuster movies and instructions and software on how to make duplicates. These are left on tables in coffee shops and pubs all over cities all over the world with a polite note that these are an example of freeing information in 2013 and another note explaining copyright and the eventual tyranny corporate power will create in our world.

At the bottom is a request saying: PLEASE DUPLICATE AND PASS ON.
      NO NETWORK REQUIRED

Jeez. They could be bankrupted in 12 months.

Moral of story: Don’t fuck with freedom of information. It can bite your ass!

The Anti-troll comnenters are OVER 9,000!

      • PacAttack

I don’t know, but if they work for somebody, they probably make it for free
and they are volunteers. e.g. I remember one case about a woman,
who wished to help her nation, USA, to fight the terrorism (heh),
then she decided to learn Arabic and she spent her time searching for webs
to find terrorist activities on internet.

        http://www.shannenrossmiller.com/media/Rossmiller%20Article,%20Bosque%20County%20News%20060307.pdf

I watched that on TV years ago, now I’m searching for that news
and I found out that pdf, this must be that woman, now I’m reading she used fake identities on internet, posting like an angry Muslim and convoked others to commit crimes, all right, a criminal is a criminal, but some of her inflammatory comments probably provoked that some persons will want to commit those acts. You know, it’s like when trolls posted, even if it can be clear they’re trolling, they can get serious replies from other persons.

Ironic part is, she loves to be a snitch, but doesn’t want to know the fate of those persons she accused, in her self-righteous world, that must help her to sleep well at nights, just like Anon and Nej that feel well with their argument: “You theft, rot in prison, that makes me happy, I’m great because I bought one DVD, I’m giving money to the artist”, for them, money solves all things.

        • ScrewEwe2

I bought 2 DVD’s about 14 years ago. Never made that mistake again.

    Derpy News Year 2 All.

I’m reminded of the old movie “It;s a Wonderful Life”, when I pause to think what little Zuzu was really thinking when the Bell rang, “Teacher sez, every friggin time a Copyright Troll get’s their Bell Rung, An Angel laughs their Ass off”.

Hoping Anon, Morganelli and Ben Dover continue making Angel’s ROTFLTAO.

Actually, God already left its creation in public domain, many centuries ago.

      • Guest

Maybe God will invoke the courts powers to retrospectively remove it from Public Domain. Good Lord! The MAFIAA might be imbued with divine powers.

Meh! What am I thinking. They already place themselves above God already!

    • ScrewEwe2

GOD, did you know your name spelled backwards is DOG? I will greet you with “What up Dog?” in all future dealings between us, but personally, I’ve come to the conclusion through empirical data compiled by mysel, and other great minds, that you DO NOT actually exist, but are a construct of Mother Gooses great uncle, Godwyn Goose.

ACTA is not dead (at least in Europe). The FTA with Peru and Colombia has a backdoor related to privacy, but no one gave any alert.

I reccomend to read the article 254 and set fire.

i’ve heard that utorrent wants to buy tixati. Is tixati even for sale? i doubt it but who knows. Anyone else hear anything about this? Talk about potential big news.

    • Guest

that would be very big news, if true.

      • john

it owuld be bad, because utorrent would fill it with bloatware…

    • Jane

if it’s true, it’s probably because utorrent is afraid of tixati

      • Anon

of course utorrent is afraid of tixati, tixati is way better,

    • IfIHadAMillionDollars

if i had millions of dollars i’d buy tixati in a minute.

    • Wes

i seen something about this around but no details or real facts yet. keeping my ear to the ground.
