TorrentLeech is Down Due to DoS Attack

Written by Ernesto on March 11, 2008

With over 150,000 users, TorrentLeech is without doubt one of the most popular private BitTorrent communities. Sadly, during the last few weeks the site suffered annoying setbacks in the form of hacking attempts, and most recently, a denial-of-service attack which has rendered the site unusable.

Getting access to private site TorrentLeech is difficult enough if you don’t have membership or don’t know a someone with invitations. Over the last few days, those difficulties in accessing the site have been extended to members too.

The current period of intermittent, but almost complete downtime has been going on for almost two days and is caused by a DoS attack, according to a message posted a few hours ago in the site’s news section.

“TorrentLeech is very slow and unresponsive during the last 30h, due to DoS attack to our webservers. Thank you for your patience, while we are trying to block this attack.”

At this point the source of the attacks is unclear, but they seem to be persistent and serious enough to completely degrade the usability of the site.

Things haven’t been going smoothly for the site recently. According to unconfirmed reports, the site was also the target of hacking attempts over the past few weeks.

Last week several TorrentLeech users received an email from a new tracker called ‘PowerScene’, asking them to join. Some users speculated that TorrentLeech may have been hacked and some email addresses leaked, or that someone from the inside leaked user information. However, none of these claims turned out to be true, as one of the admins said that TorrentLeech wasn’t hacked, but rather their sister site, PussyTorrents.

The admin wrote: “PowerScene, we believe, hacked our sister site PussyTorrents and obtained email addresses from the database there, this problem is being sorted out as we speak and admin/sysops are already working on upgrading security on both sites so no need for concern.”

To deal with the security vulnerabilities, members of the site were already prompted to update their passwords to more secure ones weeks ago, and since a few days ago they have also had to use a captcha to login.

TorrentLeech is coming back slowly, and both the tracker and the IRC channel seem to work fine. This isn’t the first time they have had to deal with a DoS attack, so they probably know how to deal with it quite effectively now.

Update: TorrentLeech moved to a new location and the site is back up.

We DO NOT sell our user details on whatsover so you’re full of shit.

We exchange them for reductions on S&M Dwarf Porn.

All you wannabe members are just idiots. You’re not a member so you just rant on like little fucktards.

I’d like to thank the admin of Torrent Leech for giving us complete logs of all their members activties. You’re all our bitches now

87 Mar 12, 2008 at 00:38 by TL Member

LOL

88 Mar 12, 2008 at 00:38 by TL Admin

I lied. We only sell the details of members who have not donated to us in at least 6 months. If you cannot be bothered to pay us for your warez, we’ll send your details to our chums at the MPAA/RIAA/IFPI/BPI/WebSheriff/Safenet/Viralg/SIIA/, and a few thousand Chinese Spammers and hackers. We used to send them to Media Defender, but their so lame now even we don’t trust them any more.

All your monies are belonging to TL.

Been a member of TorrentLeech for almost two years and for me its the best site on the net. Friendly staff, great content, and the help and advice beats any :P. I understand why other lesser sites feel the need to attack, it sucks being shit. TL is number one so why try harder :)

To be a voice of reason here, i am a member of Torrent Leech, and yes theres some great speeds to have. The staff aren no friendly and helpful than any other site, but the general populus do like to think theyre something special. It is an ok site but that Holier Than Yous attitude really is annoying.

I dont really understand why its like that, the torrents i find there are quite easily found at any other half decent torrent site, and the thing about the admins earning loads of money too.. well i dont know about that. Obviously if its true, the users dont care. The illusion of security a closed and private tracker site provides makes them happy enough.

Though anyone who knows anything knows how easy it is to access and logg ips from the outside - and the more “elite” a site acts and isolates it self from the rest of the p2p community draws more attention to it.. shame really cos then stuff like DOS attacks happening, hacking & monitoring etc

LOL i wonder why people compare TL with that small hobby tracker.

92 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:07 by DarkNinja

Powerscene sucks….their staff and owner suck…MIKISIW to be specifc :-D

93 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:09 by odol

81/87 doubt that was really the admin m8 lol

94 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:29 by You are all lame

I am a member of TL and it is a good site, you never have problems keeping ratio since there are so many members. But I know from personal experience that “some” of the staff there are power hungry knobs. They enjoy thinking they are better than their users and being ignorant. What they apparently don’t realize is that the “USERS” make the site, NOT the staff, so maybe you need some new staff. Power Scene is just lame, they spam all other sites to get members, I’m sorry but that’s definitely not the best way to earn respect and start a new site. You also need new staff.

95 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:37 by DarkNinja

yeah thats the admin :-p dont try and cover up for him…he’s a POS

96 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:41 by odol

97 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:41 by lol

i doubt if anyone has brain in their head if they believe that the admin of TL would even bother type in here

98 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:44 by DarkNinja

i wasnt speaking about admin of TL…TL is awesome place…Powerscene on the other hand…sucks balls

99 Mar 12, 2008 at 01:45 by Anonymous

powerscene rulez…the ops are the nicest there is around and even though the leechers are not as numerous as on more popular trackers, the tracker is growing steadily. I hope for the sake of powerscene that they didn’t DDoS attack tl, and that the channel is growing because of this fake accusation. I have not heard one TL Op say that this was Powerscene that did this. So, me being a fan of both trackers will agree, that both trackers have gained from this, and move on knowing that both will be…. aight ;)
