Anyone still on windows 98 must truly be a glutton for punishment...

What do you use when you want to run some old games that won't work under XP or newer?

There are virtual systems, like VMWare Player, but they typically don't fully emulate old systems.

It's ironic, that thanks to DOSBox, it's now easier to run old DOS games on a modern system, than it is to run old Windows games.

Google, for one, pays it's employees in order to spend 20% of their time creating projects of their own. Most of which then gets published as open source.

Hence you might actually state Google is the most prolific actual single entity creator around.

And it's much the same for any other tech company. Create the world's first iPod-predecessors without being apple and watch yourself sued into oblivion.

Create a new file packaging mechanism such as mp3 - get sued into oblivion.

Create ANY form of technology which as a side effect assists in information transmission - get sued into oblivion.

Hence any creative industry actually working with networks does indeed get stifled. And no wonder, when you need a dozen lawyers just to find out whether you are even allowed to research and create.

That's the problem with copyright cultists. They get banned so quickly for lying and trolling.

Plus, apparently it's a pain to switch ip's all the time just so it won't show all the pro-copyright advocates seem to work out of the same marketing agency.

I was talking about being able to freely distribute and share old versions of Windows, but yes, Microsoft does care. When a new version of Windows comes out, they do everything in their power to kill the older versions. They removed the option to compile for Win9x from Visual Studio, they made DirectX10 incompatible with XP so that any games that use can't be run on anything less than Vista.

If there were a world-wide kill-switch for older versions of Windows and if they thought they could get away with using it, they would.

Since backward compatibility in the Windows world sucks, many people build old systems to play old games. Even if Windows 8 would work on these systems, it would be completely unsuited for what the system was built for in the first place.

Besides, who knows what people could come up with if it were legal to distribute older versions of Windows and to tinker with them?
