*to both rob and annon*

i'v seen you both on this site for awhile and have read your posts and have seen both sides of the argument.
one side yells that the corporations are a corrupt and are stealing money from the poor. the other is yell back the exact opposite, saying its the pirates at fault. in reality the truth lies somewhere in the gray foggy middle ground.

pirates claim to steal because they can't afford the high prices of media and companies raise prices because they claim that pirates are stealing their media. yes the companies are in the right to be pissed that their stuff is being shared and copied for free and they are losing "potential sales". also if enough people just stop buying media and download it for free the initial value of the original product goes down. and if pirating becomes to mainstream and no one buys movies and music then they stop getting made.

that being said i cannot condone how the companies have gone about "protecting" their products, by blanket suing large amounts of people with the pay up or else policies. the companies really do need to go about this in a better way. this whole internet piracy thing has become a modern Spanish inquisition, and no one is gaining any ground.

another argument is if media became accessible and easy to acquire would pirates really be willing to pay? personally i wouldn't. i just like getting stuff for free, as it frees up money for other things. yes i should pay for movies but i don't and probably never will.

you both have good points to a very complicated problem, but arguing and name calling on the internet like preteens isn't doing anyone any good. neither of you are ever going to truly see each others point with all the hate. as pirates we need to come together and create solutions instead of making more problems. only then do stand a chance of creating any real change with the media companies.

cheers

"We can agree that the entire global economy is moving towards digitized merchandise, right?"

Not really, digital space is left for media, ideas, art, editing - collaboration, documentation, all of which should be free yet are contained in physical resources, storage which is not free - you can't go talking about a global economy progressing towards the use of digital merchandise when so much depends on physical products.

Besides, with the majority of the population out sharing files, good luck implementing a stable digital system for trades that isn't going to get leaked into.
