I don’t know if anyone else has noticed, but, if you look at how the real power structure is set up, they appear to be using some kind of modern version of the feudal system.

Ruling rich, nobles, lords etc.

The vassals, serfs, peasants etc.

“Digital Goods” is an oxymoron. As long as the concept of the personal computer or “private ownership” exists, there is no way to implement any form of restriction whatsoever on what you do or not with information.

That didn’t work in the Sovjet Union and it doesn’t work any better for the US either. Information control can’t exist once the information in question has become published.

The only way to “stop” that is to take away people’s ability to communicate the information which means to shut down the internet altogether. No other ways exist.

The main problem facing the US is that it’s still an immature nation – it’s tacitly assumed that the established power structure is a part oh the people and the nation.

As compared to old european nations where we instead assume that any elected official will turn out to be a crook and go for damage reduction instead.

Which is why a president in the US accused of adultery can be close to impeached because of it but can start wars based on big fat bags of lies. Whereas no single elected official in a european nation has anything remotely resembling similar powers.

I’m, frankly speaking, not too sure which system could be considered “less bad”. Either way John Doe gets to take it up the ass.
