I know how to handle them just fine weather it goes good or bad. Sometimes you have to sit in a cell for while to stand up for your rights. That is a price I am willing to pay every fucking time. In a court of law, certainly.
And that’s the way it may have been meant to play out in general.

Now, in real life taking the 5th will mean that either the officer sees you as an awkward sod which it won’t pay to talk with – and that’s when the officer in question is a good sort.

Or you end up with a cop in a bad mood who now cheerfuly takes your willingness to take the 5th as an open invitation to impound your car, strip-search you on the spot, or practice civil forfeiture on anything of value which happens to be in your possession.

Most of the time you end up with the cop who can’t be arsed to argue it out with you.
But if you’re unlucky you end up with the cop who will screw you to the end of what the law allows him to. And that’s a lot, alas.

News flash, son – after Patriot Act I & II, along with the NDAA, you have constitutional protection only for as long as the executive expressly allows it to you. Your rights, in real terms, are today in the US as valid as they were for an apparatchik in the Sovjet Union 1965.

Yes, the average traffic cop won’t be arsed to throw the book at you. Heaven help you when you find the one in a shitty mood.
