Since the passing of the Digital Economy Act 2010, the assent of which evoked a (not entirely) resounding cry of joy from the music industry, its swift passage into law appears to have caused some turbulence amongst ISPs, and all for valid reasons.

Rapidshare has lost a lot of its customers.
There is hardly new content anymore.
Frankly, no one will upload large amount of files if you wont get rewarded.
Goodbye RS, it was good while it lasted.
Hotfile is the way to go.
Unlimited daily downloads!

This makes me fucking sick. MPs across the country with absolutely ZERO computer literacy are voting to pass legislation that baffles the minds of millions with its technological ignorance.

All three candidate MPs replied to my e-mails and I was sure to base my considerations for who got my vote on their responses. Glad the party I voted for said no to passing the act.

* EU ACTION UPDATE: KEY DEADLINE FOR EU DECLARATION ON ACTA
EXTENDED

Fantastic news! Thanks to the efforts of committed allies
and EFF activists in the EU, more than 300 Members of
European Parliament (MEPs) have signed the Written
Declaration opposing the worst parts of ACTA, helping
extend the deadline for obtaining the remaining 69 MEP
signatures to 9 September. This victory gives EU citizens
much-needed time to urge the European Parliament to take a
stand against ACTA -- the infamously secretive effort to
curtail freedom on the Internet worldwide.

Keep the pressure on! Contact your MEP today:

<blockquote>The code of practice currently only applies to larger ISPs with more than 400,000 subscribers.

This puts BT, TalkTalk and the other large ISPs at a business disadvantage, said Andrew Heaney, executive director of TalkTalk.

<i>"It means we could have huge swathes of customers moving to smaller ISPs to avoid detection."</i></blockquote>

They only give a shit about the fact the smaller ISPs won't be held to the same standard. They will be perfectly happy with it as soon as all ISPs are treated equally.

OMG, you folks are so much better informed about your govt and representatives. You know who your MP is, how they vote, and how the process works! That would be an amazing thing in the US! You'd be treated like a freak for being that informed! And you would still get argument, terribly uninformed argument. We are so proud of our ignorance! I already knew this, but I am boldly reminded. Ho boy, I am again stunned and sad for America.

@23

How is 100mbps obsolete?

All new houses get fibre to the home, everyone else gets fibre to the box.

The next stage will be getting people to have fibre to the home.

100mpbs isn't out yet but it's in the pipeline moron.

About the throttling, I think you'll find nearly all UK ISP's throttle.

@32, dannyboy

It's not fiberglass you muppet, it's a fiber of plastic.

Anywho, I think the whole idea of MPs being able to vote on something they haven't attended the discussion for is ludicrous. Haven't said that, the vast majority of voters don't really know what they're voting for either.

Maybe if the entertainment industries would pay off our national debt problem (which currently stands at over 900 billion!), I would warm to the idea of three strikes and I would never pirate content again!

Same here - my local Labour MP ignored my letter and simply did not bother voting.

Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the act, it is an utter sham how it was passed and should be returned for proper debate.

Sadly I live in an area where you can paint a turnip red and it will get voted in. With less than 50% of the votes. Time for some electoral change as well?

Virgin will not fight against the bill, this is because it will hurt its business. This is because if everyone is downloading movies and tv shows then they will not want to us their virgin media services. so it is not in there interest too get involved.

Many of the Lords in the house of lords and many MPs were against the Digital Economy Bill, but it was rushed through parliament in the last hours of a failing government. The new Government must at least re debate this obscene bill.

It is shocking to note that only 240 MPs bothered to vote at all but that only approx 25 MPs took part in any debate. this out of a House which has 650 MPs. Every one of the LibDems who voted, voted against it. Only 4 conservatives voted for it out of the 9 who bothered to turn up. over 98 % of all votes for the bill were LABOUR

http://www.libdemvoice.org/the-digital-economy-bill-saints-the-mps-who-voted-against-labours-int ernet-freedom-clampdown-debill-18757.html

Quote
Of the 189 Aye votes, I make it 185 Labour and 4 Conservatives. Plus the two tellers were Labour.

Of the 47 Noe votes, I make it 23 Labour rebels, 16 Lib Dems, 5 Conservatives and 3 others (DUP, PC, Ind). Plus the two tellers were Lib Dem.

In total 240 MPs took part in the vote: 98% of MPs who voted for the Digital Economy Bill were Labour MPs.

The opposition to the Bill comprised 49 MPs (including the two tellers). As a percentage of the major parties representation in the House of Commons that means:

29% of all Lib Dem MPs voted against the Bill (100% of those present);

6% of all Labour MPs voted against the Bill (11% of those present); and
3% of all Tory MPs voted against the Bill (56% of those present).

This Bill has made a mockery of the Parliamentary system and must be repealed in order for it to be debated properly and a proper vote to take place

Nice of them to make a stand, but I wouldn't touch any of the main UK isp's due to their bandwidth management, usage limits, slow speed and crap customer service.
I refer to BT more than any of them...

@ #22. BTs 21CN is already obsolete. and it was BT that would not upgrade their systems, not the government restricting them. they expected everyone to remain on copper lines and refused to upgrade to fibre optic, until now. their service is crap, they throttle and restrict even those (not many) that can receive the 20meg service. and i am speaking from experience, not hearsay! YOU need to read up before YOU speak rubbish!

@13

BT have been setting up their 21st Century Network for awhile now.

THey have been set back by the government, not by choice. They have to upgrade the whole country and they have to pay and then let others use the network.

A deal needed to be broken where the Government paid for a small part of the rollout and then Ofcom would need to allow the use of the service just for BT to begin with before allowing others on so that they could recoup the costs.

Read up about them first mate before talking rubbish.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend any of the ISPs named so far. At the risk of sounding like a spammer, I'm with Zen Internet. So far, they've been very good. No fantasy 'unlimited' packages, just exceptional service for reasonable prices: 100GB per month for £35, excellent tech support and absolutely NO throttling whatsoever - their view is that you should get what you pay for. They're also small enough that they won't part of the first wave of legal hassles introduced by the DEA.

My both my MPs (old house and new) voted without bothering to hear the debate, a fact which I'm about to discuss with my new MP..

For the record, TalkTalk may be great on file sharing, but they're the worst telco in the country for customer service - going so far as to invent 'technical' reasons why broadband customers are not able to migrate away. I applaud their stance on the Bill though - it's a farce!

To be fair - both the Bill & Act are pointless. Anyone reading this knows a dozen ways to avoid detection, so this is about punishing people who dabble. Much like all laws, really!

I have been trying to find o2's stand in all of this but it seems they are keeping quiet for the time being.

have no personal knowledge of TalkTalk, only what i have read. apparantly, like BT, among other things, they severly throttle at peak times, even on what is supposed to be an 'unlimited connection'. as far as BT is concerned, for years they have been more concerned with ripping off customers with extortionate charges so they can make excessive profits and pay maximum dividends to share holders. they have failed to invest anything much in improving their phone lines and then moan like hell because their strangle hold over the UK phone system was removed, giving customers freedom of choice of which company to use. the same goes with the broadband service. failure to invest has left them at the back end of UK suppliers. instead of doing what was needed to upgrade their systems and increase their customer base, they have sat back. what they are doing here is making a token gesture to keep customers quiet and believe their interests and personal privacy are being looked after. i smell a red herring! at the first hurdle, i bet they will fold. all that will do is encourage people to change ISP. given the quality of service they give atm, i would have thought they would need to do whatever it takes to keep as many people with them as possible.

its in all the isp's best interests to fight together on this

any isp that doesn't its only going to effect them when this bill comes into power since it's their customers who's going to be canceling their sub's

i mean look at rapidshit they thought they were un-touchable they thought they could swap and change anything of their service with all their customers still just ponying up the money regardless

they got the shock of their lives this week with the millions of people who e-mailed them telling them they can shove it.

a company only exists because of its customers i think all businesses should understand this point

Great advertising for Talk Talk; good advertising for BT. A warning to stay away from the other ISPs.

The first and readiest ISPs to bend over to the government will see their subscription numbers plummet, and the others will immediately get the message.

with all the competition there is amongst ISPs, i would have thought that BT would have wanted to do whatever it could to protect and keep its customers. if it is going down the road of allowing customers to be targeted without indisputable proof of copyright infringement and without protecting its customers privacy, it is going to lose endless numbers of those customers. with all the obstacles and lack of investment from BT concerning broadband, it needs to step up to the plate here before it is so far out of date compared to other UK ISPs, it has no internet supplying business left

If only there was some way of getting more than two ISP`s to combine their efforts to combat the forces of evil! I have a great fear that the importance of this will not be foreseen until it is too late!

My Conservative MP is clueless, he doesn't even use email. He did not reply to any of my paper communication. Yet he voted in favour of an act he cannot begin to understand.
