England is a hell of a nicer place to live in than some countries of the world and its history is just as controversial as any other nation's, with one difference: we got Shakespeare – reason enough to be proud of England, I feel! (A very subjective idea I realise).

It would be nice if there was somewhere we could talk about piracy…

I wonder how long it will be before absolutely everything we say and do is recorded somewhere, 24 hours a day. Just look at how there is already a camera on nearly every corner, put there under the guise of improving safety. Once again I am reminded of the movie Vendetta.

Big businesses quite often don't operate within the law of the land
They do whatever they can get away with
Sometimes they get caught breaking the law and we find out about it
e.g. Arthur Anderson, Enron, Microsoft

Also, if the law of the land becomes too restrictive, they can relocate their HQ to another country where less stringent laws apply whilst still keeping the offices and employees they have in their original country (as a lot of US businesses did recently when the Sarbanes-Oxley Act came into effect in 2002)

What a lot of people are angry about is the fact that big businesses seem to be pulling the strings of the government and we've got to a situation now where individuals feel powerless against them

Think about it, some of the richest and most powerful entities on the planet are businesses, their only real motivation is profit

They're not elected, they don't answer to anyone except their shareholders and yet they can influence decisions that affect an entire country
The opinion of the public is ignored in favour of keeping these businesses happy

And actually I believe your wrong about the non-P2P portion of the population – I thionk these people are actually fairly ambivalent about it and would not wish people to be "got" as you put it.

Zeitgeist provides almost no citations of claimed facts at all, it's full of half-truths cherry-picked to suit the creators fantasies and outright lies and made up crap.

Of course the hardcore conspiracy nuts will completely avoid facts to suit their paranoid view of the world and will simply write off people saying they've been had as "government puppets" and part of the "evil system" that is hellbent on holding them down. Despite the fact that they claim to be "open minded" and "curious" many people swallow this crap and of course don't bother to do their own research of independent sources.

I laugh that this Matt person has spent 6 months online and is now "the most well informed person he knows" – that statement right there should give people a clue. Here is a person that believes he is very intelligent and therefore I suspect believes he cannot be wrong – he's probably of average to above average intelligence but because "being wrong" would be an affront to his self-image he cannot be to the outside world.

If you use VPN tunneling service then your ISP has no idea of what your are passing through their network so they cannot prosecute. Same goes for Usenet providers if you choose to use SSL encryption: your ISP only sees encrypted traffic and cannot identify the contents.

It's only when things get so bad that people can't bear them that they do anything about it

We haven't hit rock bottom yet, but I agree, this isn't a true democracy, at the moment it's a relaxed tyranny
