Although the ACTA treaty is downright illegal by any American standard, there is a legal clause that states that a treaty "shall be the law of the land" once it is ratified. If the courts do not block it, this is definitely happening in the United States.

If the majority of Americans knew what was going on with ACTA, they would vehemently oppose it. Then again, if the majority of Americans knew what actually went on in our capitol, they would probably take up arms and march on Washington, DC. Sadly, our big content controlled media is will not ever report the truth. The will continue to paint this as an "issue of national security" and employ typical FUD tactics against people who speak out against them.

If you voted for Obama, take a good look. His administration is no different that Bush's. In fact, it may even turn out to be worse in the end. In 2012, I urge to to support a third-party or independent candidate to end the current Democrat/Republican regime. They have ruled for long enough.

EFF Updates

* EU Action Alert: Urge Your MEP to Take a Stand for the Internet
Written Declaration 12 asks EU negotiators to ensure that ACTA
respects European citizens' fundamental rights to freedom of
expression and privacy - and opposes provisions that would encourage
Internet intermediaries to engage in surveillance or filtering of all
Internet users' communications for potential copyright-infringing
material. If 369 members of the European Parliament sign this
declaration before July 8, it will become the official opinion of the
European Parliament and send a strong message to the EU ACTA
negotiators. Approximagely 253 MEPs have signed so far, but 116 MEP
signatures are still needed - particularly from MEPs in Germany,
the U.K., Italy and Poland.

Delighted to see that there are some American readers here who can see past the smoke screens in the Land of the Free and work out who is really running the show.

You are the best hope for your country.

All though America bashing is completing legit in my view (due to all the wars and other bullying that they US is imposing on people around the world.....)

.... we should still remember that there are PLENTY of nice, smart, caring Americans who oppose the policies of "their" government.

This could only really work in the US, where prisons are run by private corporations and make money by having prisons overflowing with people charged with petty offences.
The law in the US is set up to make money for lawyers and prison corps.

Quote from the producer...

If there's any moral to this story, it's that a new day is coming to the movie business, regardless of whether it's prepared for it. "We've got to come up with a new model, because the old one just isn't working anymore," says Chubb. "You just can't fight against a model where the movie is available for free. People clearly want to download movies online, so it's time we figured out how to get some money out of it."- producer Cotty Chubb

WELL DUUHHH!!!!..... OMFG! how many times do you have to get smacked across your face to figure that out.....I'm no brainiac but I saw this coming back when the ol'Napster took off !

"Pollution,BP Oil,Wars,ACTA,Industry Whores, need I go on ?"

Ya corporation are ruling USA and this shall not be tolerated.

We have to get ride of the bum out, Rep and democrats alike and put in place a totally new government in the 3 branches.

As soon as the new government is elected their first task shall be to purge all the government administration including the FBI the CIA and the defense department.

Their second task shall be to pass very strong laws, making illegal and punishable by very sever penalties any attempt by corporations and foreign entities to control the US government.

Their third task will be to restore the constitution in it's pristine state reinstating the bill of right. This will consist in officially abolishing all the federal unconstitutional laws and banning any states laws that infringe the constitution such as the plea bargain practices, the restriction to the right to bear arms the encroachment of the right to peaceful assembly by repressing peaceful demonstrations or demanding a permit to demonstrate, restoring the unimpeded access to the court and justice to all by stopping the practice of raising attorney and court costs in front of the justifiable.

They will also have to prosecute previous war crimes committed by former administrations and restore the reputation of our country by doing so.

They've lost the moral high ground ...so now they are grasping at whatever sticks. Politicians that attempt to understand our "INTERNETS" & "TWITTERS" are just as dumbfounded & misguided as their attempts to control the net.

This to shall pass but it's gonna suck for the pioneers...namely us. ...oh well I always wanted to buck the system.

Biden's lack of understanding is not his fault..it is our burden and his advisors to school these idiots on the complexity and amazing benefits the web provides to humanity as a whole. The article below is and example of how file sharing was hated by an IP holder then felt sheepishly stupid because of what the publicity and word of mouth did for him after it was shared on a massive level.

You would think they would protect consumers from online theft and hackers. Instead they feel this is the easiest way to profit. This is why i don't care if a hacker gets access to classified material and leaks it to the public.

What really is happening is companies, (Media) say they are losing money due to the internet. they are trying to infiltrate the internet by making you pay for your media source even though you already pay for the service it provides. They don't want a "free" internet!

I am an American and 54 years old. When I was young I was one of the protesters at the Anti-Vietnam War Rallies.Since I was young I have been disgusted with our government.I protested and supported many good causes like enviroment issues.I try to vote but I find every election I only cast a vote to stop someone I perceive as not good. For instance I voted for Obama so we would not have McCain/Palin.Every damn election that is all I do.It is high time to stop both the democrats and republicans. Both parties are corrupt and cater to big content/big industry. We need to all try and cast our vote for some independent or other party.Better yet we should have the Pirate Party here and get as many as possible to vote for them.Fuck the Demos and Reps I say.Look at the BS both parties have doen to all of us USA'ers.
Pollution,BP Oil,Wars,ACTA,Industry Whores, need I go on ?

@ #26:
They’re just using copyright and child pornography as an excuse to acquire full, but discrete, control over the internet so people can’t organize or share knowledge.'

that is and always has been my opinion and i have posted saying so on this forum multiple times. if, however, they dont give a 'flying f..k about copyright', why is it that it is on the agenda so many times and is the basis of the ACTA proposals instigated by the US? couple that with 'bought out Bidden' and his one sided views, makes me think they definitely do give a 'flyin f**k', but for the internet control reasons, not the copyright reasons.

I live in America, and find it sickening that our country thinks we rule the world. I used to be proud to be American, but am not anymore. I thought I was Democrat, but will never vote Democrat again thanks to Mr. Obama and his buddy Biden, who's pockets appear to be lined with money from big business. They are extremist Democrats... and corrupt just like all of them in congress. Even our justice system is corrupt.

The new war is coming. In addition to the War on Drugs, the War On Porn, the new War on Health Insurance Scofflaws and minor dust-ups against speeders, students with bad attitudes etc. we will now have the War on Downloading, formerly known as the War on Uploading and the only people to benefit will be those in the prison construction trade. We hoped and hoped that wiser heads would prevail, restrictions would loosen, maybe even pot made legal so we could stop locking up just about anybody involved in a traffic stop. Well forget it. Now even our Pres is in on it. IT doesn't get worse than that. When he and the veep go on and on about the value of American imaginary property and the national defense application of copyright infringement and how its all about organised crime and Talibaners and such, a person has got to wonder just how much nonsense and how many lies we have been told about climate change, immigration problems and bank bailouts as well. Personally, I wouldn't believe our government if they told me the sun was shining unless I looked outdoors first. I always thought Bush looked at the China civil rights crackdown rather wistfully and wondered if there was a lesson for him there. Well now it doesn't matter if its Bush, Obama or Palin. We are going to all wear political stratejackets in the future. Might as well get used to it.

Dan @ 22 Jul 03, 2010 at 19:21 is speaking the truth. It's just some people forget to clarify, it is nevertheless implied. We, the masses, are all in the same sinking boat irrelevant of nationality, religion or color.

Sanity in the UK not coming from Lord Lucas? Well, doesn't matter, just like in the US, those sane voices will be ignored.

I do hope they aren't ignored though. Sharing is human nature, when there wasn't internet we shared physical goods and, just like in the online case, not all ppl that shared/copied ended up buying it but the ones that liked it did. Same happens in the digital world but in a massive scale.

And what's worse is that it is clear that MAFIAA is losing millions of sales with DRM or limiting releases to regions. Now I ask you, are the file sharers the real culprits for any loss here? You need to be really myopic (if the word exists) not to see the truth here.

What do you expect from infinite greed?

I read a lot of America hating on here. What you haters should realize is that not all Americans (including me) are for the bullying tactics used by evil robber barons to get their way. Sure, the US is full of those rotten bastards, and the sooner they starve to death the better, but look around - it's a sure bet you have an abundance of greedy robber barons in your own borders. BREIN, anyone?

As for the article, the copywrong and patent trolling mess is out of hand. The little guy isn't the one that should be getting packed off to the gulag for this shit, it's the aforementioned robber barons, and they can take their paid-off trolls and powermad lawyers with them.

Now excuse me, I'm off to give the finger to a BP gas station as I cruise by on my recumbent bike. I'll make sure to lube my chain with some spilled gulf oil.

I must say in any country in the civilized world making the mere act of sharing without any intent to profit financially a criminal offense, in order to protect the profit margins of a greedy corporate entity is or should be a criminal act in itself! Sharing is a natural human response. Modern societies generally regard crimes as offenses against the public or the state, distinguished from torts (offenses against private parties that can give rise to a civil cause of action).

Civil Servants are doing the same as the public. Piracy has been going on since the days of magnetic tape for film and audio.

They will call it disproportionate because they watch the films and listen to the music for free too. Of course they do, and no one got hurt doing it either. The film studios and distribution channels are still there.

Seems like a very slippery slope for politicians to start down. The US GAO said there was no real damage from file sharing. On the basis of real damage, what do they say to regulators who look the other way, corporations that file fraudulent financial statements(think MCI), Pharma members who have been defrauding the world for decades. The recent revelations of Oil and Mining shenanigans. And let's not overlook politicians taking illegal contributions and voting in damaging ways. I can spot a lot of candidates for some jail time before we make room for file sharers.
